Michigan State hockey picked up its first conference sweep of the year on Saturday night
Michigan State hockey picked up its first conference sweep of the year on Saturday night.
The Spartans scored a pair of third period goals to pull away from Ohio State in a 4-1 victory over the Buckeyes. Michigan State took both games against the Buckeyes this weekend to earn the sweep to open Big Ten play this season. Michigan State beat Ohio State by the score of 4-2 on Friday night.
Ohio State got on the board first in the second period, but Michigan State would respond with two goals in the final six minutes of the period. Gavin O’Connell had the first goal to tie it up, and Shane Vansaghi had the second only a minute later to push the Spartans ahead.
Michigan State would add to its lead midway through the third period thanks to a goal from Isaac Howard, and Daniel Russell would clinch the win with an empty netter late.
Michigan State improves to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play on the year with Saturday’s win. The Spartans will return to the ice next weekend in another two-game home series — this time against Notre Dame.
