MSU Basketball picks up convincing season-opening win over Monmouth

Michigan State basketball picks up a convincing season-opening win over Monmouth on Monday night

Michigan State is off to a better start than we saw last year.

The Spartans picked up a convincing 81-57 victory over Monmouth in Monday night’s season-opener. The Spartans led the entire game, with a double-digit advantage for most of the night.

The Spartans used a stifling defensive effort to build a comfortable early lead over the Hawks. Michigan State held Monmouth to only 25 percent shooting from the field, but poor shooting (1-of-10) from the Spartans from three-point range kept the game in strike at halftime. Michigan State led 38-27 at the break.

Monmouth came out firing in the second half, cutting the Spartans’ lead down to only two possessions within the first few minutes of the frame. However, from that point, Michigan State would take control and eventually pull away. The Spartans would lead by double-digits for the final 14:36 in the game.

Michigan State was led in scoring by Jaden Akins, who finished with 23 points. That total matched Akins’ career-high. He also had nine rebounds in the win for a near double-double.

Jase Richardson also reached double-digits in points with 10, while Coen Carr, Frankie Fidler and Szymon Zapala all finishing with nine points.

Jeremy Fears led the Spartans offense from the point with eight assists. It was his first official game back since last December when he suffered a season-ending injury from a gunshot wound during the holiday break.

Michigan State will return to the court on Thursday in another home non-conference matchup against Niagara. Tipoff from the Breslin Center is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

How to watch MSU Basketball vs. Monmouth today: Time, TV channel, Prediction

It’s Michigan State basketball vs. Monmouth tonight from the Breslin Center. Here’s how to watch, including time, and streaming info

Michigan State basketball is once again back in our lives.

The Spartans will open the 2024-25 regular season on Monday in a non-conference matchup against the Monmouth Hawks. Michigan State enters this matchup as a sizeable favorite over the Hawks, but of course nothing is a given after James Madison shocked the Spartans in last year’s season-opening game.

Michigan State was picked to finish No. 5 in the Big Ten preseason poll, and enters the upcoming season with expectations of contending for the league crown. Monmouth was picked to finish No. 8 out of 14 teams in the CAA.

This will be the first game of the regular season for both Michigan State and Monmouth. The Spartans beat a pair of Division II teams in exhibitions matchups, while Monmouth won its lone exhibition game against a Division III foe.

Michigan State vs. Monmouth predictions, picks, odds

Michigan State 78, Monmouth 59: I don’t need to remind Michigan State fans of how last year’s season opener against a small school went, and I’m confident that lightning won’t strike twice against the Spartans. Monmouth will not be a pushover, but I anticipate Michigan State’s talent and defensive ability is too much in a relatively comfortable victory over the Hawks

ODDS: Michigan State -18.5

O/U: 140.5
