Michigan State vs. Minnesota: Will Spartans bounce back in Big Ten opener?

See our predictions for Michigan State’s Big Ten opener against Minnesota on Saturday

Last week was ugly for the Spartans, but it’s a new week and Michigan State will look to pick up a much-needed bounce-back victory over Minnesota on Saturday.

The Spartans were shredded by Washington last week to drop their first game of the year. Minnesota, on the flip side, rolled past Colorado to remain undefeated on the season and improve to 3-0. Saturday marks the Big Ten opener for both the Spartans and Golden Gophers — which is a massive game for a pair of teams that have aspirations of winning the Big Ten this year.

What does the Spartans Wire staff think about this matchup? Here are our score predictions for Michigan State-Minnesota and how we see this nonconference game playing out:

Michigan State vs. Minnesota injury report:

Both Michigan State and Minnesota are dealing with injuries after a pair of games this year.

Michigan State was down four critical players in last week’s loss at Washington, and other than linebacker Darius Snow, who is out for the season, it’s unclear who all will be available this week. The other three key players battling injuries to monitor are safety Xavier Henderson, wide receiver Jayden Reed and defensive tackle Jacob Slade.

Minnesota also experienced some bad injury news in the past week, with the Golden Gophers losing their top wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell. Golden Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck confirmed on Monday that Autman-Bell will be out the remainder of the year after suffering a knee injury last week against Colorado.

Advice and prediction

Minnesota has looked very impressive so far this year but they have yet to face an opponent like Michigan State. Like many, I’m not particularly high on the Spartans after Saturday’s beat down loss at Washington but … there’s still plenty of talent on this roster to expect a bounce back performance. Spartans quarterback Payton Thorne looked sharp on Saturday and if the offense can get just a little bit of production on the ground then I like them to win this one at home.

Prediction: Michigan State – 31, Minnesota – 27

Michigan State is still undefeated in conference play thanks to a buzzer beater bucket from Joey Hauser.

The Spartans topped Minnesota, 71-69, on Wednesday night in a thrilling back-and-forth conference battle that ended on a Hauser buzzer beater. With just 0.1 seconds left on the clock, Hauser dropped a contested shot in the paint to lift the Spartans to victory. Hauser finished the game with eight points, with his final two being the most critical.

With the win the Spartans improve to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Michigan State also completed the season sweep of Minnesota with Wednesday’s victory.

Michigan State appeared prime for a nice blowout win over the Golden Gophers with the control for most of the first half. The Spartans led by as many as 10 points in the opening frame, but Minnesota finished the half on a run that cut Michigan State’s lead to just 34-31 at the break.

The second half was a lot closer than the opening half, with neither team having more than a six-point lead in the half. The game was tied up late on a pair of free throws from Minnesota’s E.J. Stephens. However, there would be no overtime thanks to the buzzer beater from Hauser.

The Spartans were led in scoring by Max Christie (16 points), Gabe Brown (13 points) and Tyson Walker (10 points). Michigan State shot 51.9 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range.

Michigan State returns to the court on Saturday in a home matchup against Northwestern. Tip off from the Breslin Center is scheduled for 12 p.m. EST and can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
