The Spartans used a strong defensive effort to handle Minnesota for yet another Big Ten win on Tuesday evening. Michigan State beat Minnesota by the final score of 73-51.

Michigan State used a stifling defensive performance in the opening half to build a sizable lead going into the break. The Spartans forced 11 first-half turnovers for the Golden Gophers, and ended the half on a 15-to-4 run to lead 36-16 at halftime. The Spartans’ strong finish to the half was bolstered by three straight three-pointers from Tre Holloman.

Who’s ready for some Big Ten hoops?

Michigan State opens the Big Ten slate on Wednesday night in a road game at Minnesota. The Spartans come into this matchup as the favorites and are expected to get conference play off on the right foot.

Michigan State is 6-2 overall following a strong showing in the Maui Invitational. The Spartans finished in third place in the event after knocking off North Carolina in their final game last Wednesday.

Minnesota is 6-3 overall after a shakey start to the year. The Golden Gophers have yet to pick up a marquee win, and have dropped one game against a mid-major foe (North Texas) and narrowly gotten by a number of other mid-major opponents.

Michigan State vs. Minnesota predictions, picks, odds

Michigan State 75, Minnesota 67: There’s no such thing as an easy road game in Big Ten play — but this may be the “easiest” on the Spartans’ slate this year. Minnesota isn’t the same NCAA Tournament bubble team as last year, and if Michigan State is truly going to contend for a Big Ten title then they better win this one. I think they do through a strong defensive effort.
