Report: Former Spartan Max Christie nearly included in blockbuster Kyrie Irving trade

A former Spartans basketball star was nearly included in a massive NBA trade on Sunday

A former Spartans basketball star was nearly included in a massive NBA trade on Sunday.

Kyrie Irving of the Brooklyn Nets was nearly shipped to the Los Angeles Lakers, and had that trade came into fruition then Max Christie would have been part of the return package. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Christie would have been one of the many players and draft picks sent over to the Nets in exchange for Irving.

That deal, however, didn’t occur and Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks instead. So with that, Christie remains on the Los Angeles Lakers — for now at least.

Christie was drafted by the Lakers in the second round of last year’s NBA Draft. He has appeared in 33 games (including two starts) this year, and is averaging 3.8 points per game.

Max Christie reportedly invited to NBA Draft Combine

Michigan State Spartans guard Max Christie has reportedly received an invite to the NBA Draft Combine

Michigan State Spartans guard Max Christie has reportedly received an invite to the NBA Draft Combine.

College basketball insider Ant Wright reported on Thursday evening that Christie has received an invite to the upcoming NBA Draft Combine. The talent evaluation event is scheduled for May 16 – 22 in Chicago.

Christie entered his name into the NBA Draft after just one season with Michigan State, but could still return to school should he choose. Christie started all 35 games this past year and averaged 9.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game as a freshman.

It was reported yesterday that Gabe Brown received an invite to the NBA Draft Combine as well so Christie will have a fellow Spartan in Chicago.

How Christie performs at the combine will certainly play a big role in whether or not he keeps his name in the NBA Draft. So Spartans fans will soon know if they can expect Christie gone or back for another season.
