Josh Pate of Late Kick Josh is confident Jonathan Smith will turn around Michigan State football.

Smith has been on the job for the Spartans for roughly seven months, and he’s already built up some confidence from Pate. On Wednesday evening, Pate stated on X that Smith “will win at Michigan State.” The post on X from Pate can be seen below:

The statement from Pate is very vague but it certainly suggests he is confident in Smith’s ability to get the Spartans back on track. Whether that’s contending for Big Ten titles or just reaching bowl games is unknown, but this is still a refreshing take from Pate to see for Spartans everywhere.

Michigan State officially opens the 2024 season on August 30 against Florida Atlantic. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on Big Ten Network.

A unit that has lately been a weakness for the Spartans may actually be a positive this year.

Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith was at Big Ten Football Media Days on Wednesday and he shared some positive news about the offensive line. Smith was quoted by Kenny Jordan of On3 stating he’s “optimistic” about the Spartans’ offensive line unit.

Michigan State will have some new faces up front with a number of players transferring in and out this past offseason. Hearing that Smith is optimistic about the group, though, is refreshing for fans since Michigan State has struggled up front over the past few years.

Michigan State will take the stage at Big Ten Football Media Days on Wednesday.

The Spartans will be one of the six teams featured on day two of Big Ten Football Media Days. The other five teams to be in attendance on Wednesday are Iowa, Nebraska, Penn State, UCLA and USC.

Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith will take the main stage at 12 p.m. ET. The press conference will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.

Additionally, the following three Michigan State players will be in attendance for the media event:

  • Running back Nate Carter
  • Defensive back Dillon Tatum
  • Tight end Jack Velling

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd has released his annual “Hot Seat Rankings” this week, which lists out all 134 college football coaches at the FBS level and where they rate on the hot seat meter. The ratings range from zero (Untouchable) to five (Win or be fired).

So where does new Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith land? Well, he’s in a pretty safe spot as you would expect.

Dodd has Smith listed as a one rating, which is considered “safe and secure” at the moment. As the new lead man of the Spartans’ program, this is an expected spot for Smith.

Michigan State made arguably the best hire of this year’s college football coaching carousel, according to Jesse Simonton of On3.

Simonton put out his coaching carousel report cards earlier this week, and the Spartans’ hiring of Jonathan Smith ranked near the top of the list. Simonton gave Michigan State an “A” grade for the hiring of Smith.

The only other schools to get an “A” grade from Simonton was Alabama’s hiring of Kalen DeBoer and Houston’s hiring of Willie Fritz.

Michigan State released an official announcement for the hiring of six assistant coaches, including Brian Lindgren as the new offensive coordinator. Additionally, Michigan State announced the hiring of five support staffers.

Justin Thind of 247Sports and Noah Sprunger of On3 are reporting that Oregon State defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa will be hired by the Spartans for the same position. Suiaunoa has been with Smith at Oregon State since his inaugural season in 2018.
