Michigan State football’s back is against the wall when it comes to reaching the postseason this year.

The Spartans will need to win both of its final two games this season to reach a bowl game, but that hasn’t scared away Erick Smith from including the Spartans in his weekly bowl projections. Smith released an updated batch of bowl projections on Tuesday and Michigan State is still slated for the Rate Bowl in Phoenix. Smith has the Spartans playing against Texas Tech in the projected matchup.

Michigan State is in the midst of a three-game losing streak, including back-to-back double-digit defeats to Indiana and Illinois. The Spartans are 4-6 overall and 2-5 in Big Ten play.

The Spartans host Purdue this week, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Friday. Michigan State is a sizable favorite in this matchup.

Spartans back in latest USA TODAY bowl projections

Michigan State football has returned to the weekly USA TODAY bowl projections

Michigan State football has returned to the weekly USA TODAY bowl projections.

After being left out for a few weeks, Erick Smith has once again added Michigan State to his weekly update of bowl projections. Smith has the Spartans landing in the Pinstripe Bowl facing off against Syracuse.

Michigan State has been a common pick for the Detroit Bowl this week, with both Action Network and CBS Sports slating the Spartans for that bowl. So Smith having Michigan State in the Pinstripe Bowl is a slightly better placement for the Spartans.

Spartans left off updated USA TODAY Bowl Projections

USA TODAY does not like the Spartans’ chances of reaching a bowl game this year

As of right now, Michigan State will not be bowling this year, according to Erick Smith of USA TODAY.

Despite being only two games away from reaching bowl eligibility, Smith has left the Spartans off his latest batch of bowl projections. Smith released his most recent version of bowl projections earlier this week and it did not include Michigan State.

Michigan State is 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Big Ten play on the year. The Spartans could very well have two more wins on their resume had they made just a few more winning plays.

Michigan State will host undefeated Indiana on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff between the Spartans and Hoosiers is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be available to watch via Peacock streaming.

Michigan State is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play on the year. The Spartans must win at least three more games to reach the bowl eligibility.

Michigan State is on a bye this week and will return to action next week against Iowa. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on NBC.

Michigan State football is heading out west in the latest batch of bowl projections from USA TODAY.

Erick Smith of USA TODAY released his updated bowl projections for this week on Tuesday, and Michigan State is going to Arizona. He has the Spartans projected to play in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl against Cincinnati in his last projections.

Michigan State is 3-1 on the year following a loss to Boston College last week. That loss dropped the Spartans in the bowl pecking order from the Music City Bowl in Smith’s projection last week to the Guaranteed Rate Bowl this week.

Next up for Michigan State is a pair of matchups against top 10 teams — Ohio State this week and at Oregon next week. So it’ll be interesting to monitor the Spartans’ bowl status over the next few weeks, with Michigan State either raising its bowl stock or dropping it.
