CFB analyst breaks down how MSU could reach College Football Playoff

So you’re saying there’s a chance?

What if I told you what is needed for Michigan State to reach the College Football Playoff? Well, one analyst has done that recently.

Kelly Ford — known for his KFord Ratings which analyze team’s resumes — has released a breakdown of how many games each team needs to be in the College Football Playoff discussion as an at-large team. For Michigan State, that number is nine.

Check out the complete breakdown from Ford below:

Michigan State is 2-0 after picking up a big road upset win last week at Maryland. The Spartans head into this week’s matchup as heavy favorites against Prairie View A&M.

So if the Spartans take care of business this week, then in theory Michigan State would only need to go 6-3 across the final nine games per Ford. Is that possible? Yes, possible. Is that likely? No, not likely. But this interesting report at least gives you an indication of what could be ahead for the Spartans should they surprise some folks this year and win more games than anyone expected.

CBS Sports: MSU is one of five teams that could go from losing season to College Football Playoff

Michigan State is listed as one of five teams that could be the next TCU in 2023 and go from missing postseason to title contender

Could Michigan State football go from missing the postseason to playing for a national championship in 2023? It’s unlikely, but Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports gives the Spartans a shot.

TCU was the ultimate season-to-season flip this year, going from missing a bowl game in 2021 to reaching the title game in 2022. That prompted Fornelli to wonder which teams could potentially experience a similar reversal of fortune in 2023. The Spartans were one of five teams he listed.

Who else does Fornelli think could go from the bottom to the top in 2023? See Fornelli’s complete list below with a little bit of his reasoning for each:

Michigan State no longer has a zero in the loss column.

The Spartans dropped their first game of the season on Saturday, losing at Purdue, 40-29. Michigan State struggled against the Boilermakers passing attack all afternoon and couldn’t keep up in this high-scoring matchup.

With the loss, Michigan State will surely drop in the updated College Football Playoff rankings that come out next week. But how far do we think they’ll drop? See what I think ahead of the next rankings release on Tuesday night.

Michigan State didn’t play this past weekend, but their chances of reaching the College Football Playoff still experienced a slight dip.

FiveThirtyEight, a data firm, is releasing weekly statistical odds for the nation’s top teams making the College Football Playoff and undefeated Michigan State is still in the mix. The Spartans, however, dropped in the updated statistical odds from last week with Michigan State now listed at a 12 percent chance of reaching the College Football Playoff. Last week it was 13 percent.

Michigan State remains behind only Ohio State (36 percent), Michigan (25 percent) and Iowa (13 percent) for best chances to reach the playoff from the Big Ten.

Michigan State is also listed to have a 10 percent chance of winning the Big Ten and a 2 percent chance of winning the national championship.

Michigan State has a huge rivalry matchup this weekend against Michigan. Both teams are 7-0 entering this game, and the winner will ultimately remain in contention for the Big Ten title and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

At 7-0 on the season, Michigan State is firmly in the College Football Playoff discussion. But what are their chances of actually making the playoff? FiveThirtyEight has some thoughts on that.

FiveThirtyEight, a data firm, is releasing weekly statistical odds for the nation’s top teams making the College Football Playoff and the Spartans evidently are in the mix. Michigan State is listed to have a 13 percent chance to make the College Football Playoff after their 7-0 start to the season.

At 13 percent, Michigan State has the 10th best odds of reaching the College Football Playoff nationally. The Spartans are fourth in the Big Ten behind Ohio State (30 percent), Michigan (23 percent) and Iowa (14 percent).

Additionally, Michigan State has an 11 percent chance of winning the Big Ten and 2 percent chance of winning the National Championship, according to FiveThirtyEight.

Below is the complete breakdown of the top teams’ chances of reaching the College Football Playoff.

The Spartans are off this week, and will return to the field next Saturday against Michigan. A win over the Wolverines should only bolster Michigan State’s chances of reaching the program’s second-ever College Football Playoff appearance.
