Watch MSU LB Cal Haladay break down loss vs. Ohio State

Hear what MSU LB Cal Haladay had to say following the Spartans’ 38-7 loss vs. Ohio State on Saturday

Saturday night proved Michigan State football has a ways to go to beat the big boys, but they at least are more competitive with the top tier squads than we’ve seen the past two seasons.

The Spartans hung with the Buckeyes for most of the first half, but a late half score for Ohio State pushed their lead to three scores which ultimately was too big of a hole to overcome. The final score was 38-7 and was the Spartans’ ninth straight home loss to Ohio State.

With the loss, Michigan State drops to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play on the season. The Spartans have now lost two straight games, and have another tough game ahead at top 10 Oregon next week.

Following the loss, Michigan State linebacker Cal Haladay met with the media to discuss the game. Hear what he had to say in his post-game press conference in the video below:

MSU LB Cal Haladay named to Butkus Award Watchlist

Michigan State linebacker Cal Haladay has been named to another preseason award watch list

Michigan State linebacker Cal Haladay has been named to yet another preseason award watch list.

The Spartans consistent starting linebacker was named to the Butkus Award Watchlist on Thursday afternoon. The Butkus Award is annually given to the nation’s best linebacker.

Haladay was also recently added to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List for the best defensive player in college football.

Haladay led the Big Ten in tackles per game (10.0) last season and ranked second in the conference overall with a career-high 120 tackles. He is returning for his third year as a starter and should once again be a key piece for the Spartans’ defense.

247Sports puts MSU LB Cal Haladay among candidates for Big Ten Defensive Player of Year

Michigan State linebacker Cal Haladay is on a short list of candidates to win the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, according to 247Sports

Michigan State linebacker Cal Haladay is on a short list of candidates to win Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, according to 247Sports.

Haladay returns for his third year at Michigan State this fall,Β  and is expected to make a third straight season of starting at linebacker for the Spartans. His high level of production the past two seasons has 247Sports putting him as one of their five preseason candidates for Defensive Player of the Year in the league.

Here’s a little bit of what Raymond Lucas Jr. had to say about Haladay:

“It’s been a tough offseason for Michigan State, but Cal Haladay is back, meaning things could be worse. The Spartan defense received a boost from Haladay, who made 120 tackles (42 solo) with a forced fumble and recovery.”

If Michigan State’s defense is able to take a big step forward in 2023, Haladay certainly would be a big part of that. I personally don’t think Haladay will win this award by the end of the year, but it’s nice to see him get some well-deserved preseason recognition.
