Michigan State could have the nation’s top tight end if you ask new head coach Jonathan Smith

Michigan State could have the nation’s top tight end if you ask new head coach Jonathan Smith.

During Big Ten Football Media Days this past week, Smith was asked about Jack Velling and he provided a very strong statement about his star tight end. Here’s what Smith had to say about Velling — courtesy of X account Michigan State Content:

“He’s got natural hands, can separate, catch contested balls. He’s got a chance to be one of the best tight ends in the country.”

Velling followed Smith from Oregon State this offseason, and was considered one of the Spartans’ top gets in the transfer portal. In two seasons with the Beavers, Velling recorded 45 receptions for 719 yards and 11 touchdowns. Eight of those 11 touchdowns came this past season with the Beavers.
