Michigan State basketball is just outside the top 25 teams in the country in the eyes of college basketball analyst Andy Katz.

Katz released an updated batch of his “Power 36” college basketball rankings on Monday, which listed the Spartans just outside the top 25. Michigan State came in one spot behind conference rival Northwestern at No. 27.

The Spartans were the fourth highest-ranked team from the Big Ten behind Purdue (No. 2), Illinois (No. 14) and Northwestern (No. 26). Check out the complete rankings in the post below:

MSU basketball remains ranked in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll, but again saw a drop this week.

Michigan State basketball remains ranked in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll, but again saw a drop this week.

The Spartans dropped three more spots in Monday’s updated poll from the AP. The Spartans come in at No. 21.

Michigan State opened the season at No. 4 but has dropped 17 spots in the first two weeks. The Spartans fall in the rankings is mostly tied to early season losses against James Madison and Duke.

Michigan State is 3-2 overall and has won its last two games. The Spartans will return to the floor on Thanksgiving in a neutral floor showdown against Arizona.

Another early season loss for the Spartans means another drop in CBS Sports’ daily rankings.

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports maintains a daily top 25 and one rankings throughout the college basketball season, and Michigan State has quickly dropped towards the bottom of his list. The Spartans dropped their second game of the season on Tuesday in a Champions Classic loss to Duke. That loss has sent Michigan State to No. 21 in Parrish’s rankings.

The Spartans remain the second highest ranked team in the Big Ten behind Purdue who is No. 2. Illinois is the only other Big Ten team ranked, sitting at No. 22.

Michigan State will look to get things back on track on Friday against Butler. That game is scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports is high on the Spartans for next year, but not as much as some other media outlets.

Parrish released an updated batch of preseason rankings for the 2023-24 season earlier this month, and to no surprise, Michigan State was near the top. However, he has Michigan State at No. 5 — which comes in three spots behind Purdue at No. 2. Parrish also has Kansas (No.1), Duke (No. 3) and Florida Atlantic (No. 4) ahead of the Spartans in his rankings.

Michigan State and Purdue were two of only three Big Ten teams to make Parrish’s rankings, with Illinois being the third team at No. 23.

The Spartans have been a regular highly ranked team in the preseason rankings I’ve seen in the past month. Most I’ve come across have Michigan State sitting at No. 3 behind only Kansas and Duke so for Parrish to have the Spartans a few spots lower is somewhat surprising.

Michigan State basketball will enter the 2023-24 season as one of the favorites to win it all

Michigan State basketball will enter the 2023-24 season as one of the favorites to win it all.

Michigan State got some great news on Wednesday when both AJ Hoggard and Jaden Akins announced they would be returning for another season in East Lansing, Mich. Those two and the return of Tyson Walker means the Spartans will have arguably the best backcourt in the country next year.

College basketball analyst Andy Katz must agree because he has the Spartans at No. 3 in his updated power rankings. Michigan State is behind only Kansas (No. 1) and Duke (No. 2).

Katz also is high on Purdue at No. 4. Other Big Ten teams included in his top 36 power rankings are Ohio State (No. 19), Illinois (No. 20), Maryland (No. 22), Northwestern (No. 24), Indiana (No. 27), Wisconsin (No. 31) and Rutgers (No. 36). So it should be yet another great year of basketball in the Big Ten in 2023-24.

Michigan State basketball will enter the 2023-24 season with much higher expectations than this past year.

The Spartans are returning nearly everyone from a team that reached the Sweet 16 this past year and will be welcoming in a top three recruiting class as well. So that means it’s officially hype season for Michigan State basketball.

A big reason for all of the hype is the many media outlets that have released way-too-early preseason rankings for the 2023-24 season. The first game won’t tip off for another seven months, but let’s have some fun and see where the Spartans land in each of these super early rankings for next year:

Michigan State jumped 20 spots to finish the year at No. 20 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll for the 2022-23 season. Michigan State was one of only three Big Ten teams to be listed in the poll, with Purdue at No. 13 and Indiana at No. 24.

Michigan State basketball remains outside the AP Top 25 this week

Michigan State basketball picked up a pair of wins this past week but remains unranked in the latest Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll.

The Spartans received five votes in this week’s updated poll released on Monday afternoon. Michigan State fell 16 spots outside of the rankings at No. 41.

Big Ten teams that cracked the Top 25 included Purdue (No. 1), Indiana (No. 14), Illinois (No. 18), Maryland (No. 20), Wisconsin (No. 22) and Ohio State (No. 23).

Sports Illustrated released its preseason rankings for every school in the country, with Michigan State landing outside of the top 25. But how far outside the top 25 were the Spartans and how do they compare to their Big Ten peers?

In the eyes of CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish, Michigan State basketball is still considered a top 25 team heading into next season

In the eyes of CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish, Michigan State basketball is still considered a top 25 team heading into next season.

Parrish has Michigan State listed at No. 25 in his updated rankings released earlier this week. The Spartans come in as the fifth highest Big Ten team in these rankings, behind Indiana (No. 16), Michigan (No. 18), Purdue (No. 22) and Ohio State (No. 24).

Here’s what Parrish had to say about Michigan State:

“The Spartans’ ranking is based on Michigan State returning five of the top nine scorers from a team that advanced to the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament. Max Christie’s decision to remain in the NBA Draft is a blow – but Tom Izzo should still coach in his 25th straight NCAA Tournament next March.”

Things haven’t gone as many Spartans’ fans would have liked this offseason — which has resulted in Michigan State sliding in a number of preseason rankings. That has happened with Parrish’s rankings as well but it’s still promising to see Michigan State listed here.
