MSU AD Alan Haller responds to Big Ten not issuing any discipline in MSU-UM incident

There will be no punishment for either school in the Spartans-Wolverines postgame incident this past weekend.

There will be no punishment for either school in the Michigan State-Michigan postgame incident this past weekend.

The Big Ten announced on Tuesday it will essentially proceed with no punishment for either program. There were rumors and accusations that a Michigan player was stomping on a Michigan State staffer and player on the ground. However, the Big Ten determined there was not enough evidence for the league to enact any punishments.

This, of course, elicited a response from Michigan State. Shortly after the Big Ten released its statement, Spartans athletic director Alan Haller released the following statement:

“Regardless of whether I agree with the Big Ten’s decision, their decision is final. I will continue to work to make sure our student-athletes, coaches and staff are treated fairly.”

Michigan State came up short on the field in the rivalry game against the Wolverines, losing 24-17. Michigan State turns its focus to Indiana this week.

MSU officially postpones events, releases statement following school shooting on Monday

MSU has officially postponed all sporting events through Wednesday and released a statement from athletic director Alan Haller

Michigan State has officially postponed all sporting events through Wednesday and released a statement following Monday’s tragic shooting on campus.

It had been reported that Michigan State would postpone all athletics events through Wednesday, which included the Spartans’ home basketball game against Minnesota. This was made official by the athletic department around 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Michigan State’s home men’s tennis match against Drake and women’s basketball road game at Purdue on Wednesday were also postponed. The school didn’t announce rescheduling details for those events or address other athletics events past Wednesday.

Here is the statement released by Michigan State Athletic Director Alan Haller:

“We are all devastated following the tragic events of Monday night. First and foremost, our heart breaks for the families and loved ones of the students who were taken from us much too soon. And our prayers are with those still fighting for their lives in the hospital.

“The focus for the athletic department today has been the mental health and wellness of our student-athletes and staff. All across campus, different units are doing the same to make sure everyone is getting the resources they need. Please reach out if you’re in need of assistance and look for ways to support and help your fellow Spartan. I’ve been reminded today that everyone will process trauma in a different manner.

“To everyone who has reached out in support of our community, I offer my sincere gratitude. The outpouring of support from across the Big Ten Conference and the country has been overwhelming. It’s clear that although we may compete on the court, we are truly united by our shared humanity.

“At some point in the days ahead, we will return to the field of competition. For some, the games will provide a momentary escape from our shattered reality, but we must never lose sight that life has been irrevocably altered for us all. Our commitment to look after one another has never been more necessary.”

MSU AD Alan Haller hints at upcoming conference realignment for Big Ten

It appears there will be some shakeup to the Big Ten conference in the near future

It appears there will be some shakeup to the Big Ten conference in the near future.

Michigan State Athletic Director Alan Haller made some interesting comments on Monday regarding potential conference realignment in the Big Ten. Haller was asked about any shakeup to the Big Ten coming down the pipeline during the Michigan State luncheon with the Detroit Economic Club and he hinted at something being in the works.

Here’s what Haller had to say (courtesy of the Detroit Free Press’ Tony Garcia):

At first glance, this seems to be related to the conference working to either remove or adjust the current divisions used in football. For a long time, the imbalance of competition between the Big Ten East and West Divisions has been clear so it appears the league is working to resolve this issue.

Haller’s comments could also be related to the league exploring adding more teams to the conference. There was a ton of buzz last year when Texas and Oklahoma jumped ship of the Big 12 to join the SEC, but the Big Ten has been quiet ever since then. Could this mean the league is finally getting off the sidelines and looking to add one or two more teams?

Either way, it’s exciting to hear the conference is looking to make some changes that I’d assume would be positive moves. We should hopefully know soon enough what those changes will be.
