Jets agree to terms with offensive tackle Morgan Moses on one-year pact

The Jets are beefing up their offensive line with the seven-year veteran tackle.

A year ago, Joe Douglas said teams can never have too many good offensive linemen and he’d do everything he could to sign as many as he could.

He’s making good on that promise.

The Jets agreed to contract terms with tackle Morgan Moses to a one-year, $3.6 million deal on Friday, according to the Washington Post. Moses, a seven-year veteran with the Washington Football Team, should immediately step in as a starter on the Jets offensive line. He can either replace George Fant on the right side in his natural position, take over at right guard for Greg Van Roten or fill in for Mekhi Becton while he recovers from plantar fasciitis.

Either way, the Moses deal is a slam-dunk signing for Douglas as he looks to build a formidable offensive line.

Moses finished 2020 with a solid 80.6 overall Pro Football Focus grade and excelled in run-blocking with an 85.6 grade. He helped rookie Antonio Gibson rushed for 4.7 yards per carry – which ranked 17th in the league last year – despite a bottom-tier rushing attack. Washington’s rushing DVOA also ranked 14th, according to Football Outsiders. His pass-blocking leaves a little bit to be desired, though. Moses allowed five sacks in 2020 and Washington ranked 28th in pass protection as a team.

One of the best qualities of Moses is his durability. He hasn’t missed a game and started all 16 games in seven consecutive seasons.

Bears had ‘fruitful talks’ with Morgan Moses about signing as left tackle

Before Morgan Moses signed with the Jets, he talked with the Bears about signing as a left tackle.

When Morgan Moses hit the free-agent market, Bears fans were clamoring for the team to consider signing the veteran offensive tackle.

But before Moses agreed to sign a one-year deal worth $3.6 million with the Jets, he had “fruitful talks” with the Bears, according to Mike Garafolo.

What’s interesting is that Chicago reached out to Moses about occupying the left tackle position, which is where rookie Teven Jenkins is expected to start this season. Moses ultimately signed with the Jets given he’s more comfortable at right tackle.

The interest in Moses at left tackle is more about his experience than anything. If the Bears had any doubts about Jenkins at left tackle, they wouldn’t have released veteran Charles Leno.

The Bears offense line is going to look different at the tackle position following the release of Charles Leno and Bobby Massie this offseason. Chicago drafted Jenkins to occupy the starting left tackle spot while Germain Ifedi and Larry Borom will battle it out for the starting right tackle position.

It certainly would’ve been nice for the Bears to land an experienced veteran like Moses, especially at what appears to have been a reasonable price.

Jets, Morgan Moses making progress on potential multi-year deal

Morgan Moses is nearing a decision on his future, and the Jets are the favorite to land the veteran tackle.

The Jets may have a new offensive lineman joining their ranks soon.

New York and Morgan Moses are making progress on a potential multi-year deal, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. The Jets are considered the favorites to land the tackle, though nothing is official and other teams are still involved in courting the veteran.

The Jets have had their eyes on Moses ever since a foot injury sidelined starting left tackle Mekhi Becton. Moses – who has played every game for Washington over the past six seasons – would be a fantastic replacement if Becton were to ever miss time. At the very least, he would be an upgrade over right tackle George Fant. The 30-year-old Moses is an adept blocker who finished with an 80.6 overall Pro Football Focus ranking in 2020.

It’s unclear what the Jets have offered Moses, but few teams have as much cap space. New York ranks third in the league with an estimated $27 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap, and that’s without including Jamison Crowder’s undisclosed pay cut. Adding Moses would be a solid fortification to the Jets’ offensive line, no matter if he’s a backup or a starter.

Veteran OT Morgan Moses visited Jets last week

Veteran offensive tackle Morgan Moses is a free agent for the first time after the Washington Football Team released him on May 20.

It looks like the Jets are making an effort to upgrade their offensive line depth ahead of training camp.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, New York hosted veteran offensive tackle Morgan Moses for a visit last week. Per Rapoport, Moses is visiting with the Bears on Tuesday and could end up taking more visits before settling on a destination.

Moses was released by the Washington Football Team on May 20 after spending seven seasons with the organization. A former third-round pick out of the University of Virginia and a former USA Today High School All-American, Moses appeared in 104 games with Washington, starting 97 at right tackle. He had started 96 consecutive games at the position for Washington prior to his release.

The Jets have made an effort to upgrade their offensive line this offseason, signing the versatile Dan Feeney in free agency and trading up to draft USC’s Alijah Vera-Tucker with the No. 14 pick in the 2021 NFL draft. New York is set with Mekhi Becton and George Fant as its starting tackles, but Moses would give Robert Saleh and Mike LaFleur a reliable veteran they can turn to in a pinch if Becton or Fant were to go down with an injury at any point in 2021.

The Jets currently have the second-most salary cap space in the NFL entering post-June 1 free agency at $25 million, according to Over The Cap.

Bears fans are loving the idea of adding Morgan Moses to the offensive line

With a quality offensive tackle visiting Chicago, you have to believe Bears fans are loving the idea of Morgan Moses joining the team.

The Chicago Bears have plenty of questions on the offensive line, particularly at the tackle position. But they could address those concerns with the addition of veteran offensive tackle Morgan Moses, who is set to visit the Bears on Wednesday.

If Chicago were able to land Moses — just as they’re getting $9 million in salary cap space from Charles Leno’s release — it would do wonders for this offensive line that will be tasked with protecting rookie quarterback Justin Fields, perhaps as early as Week 1.

With a quality offensive tackle visiting Chicago, you have to believe Bears fans are loving the idea of Moses joining their offensive line — and they’re ready to once again praise GM Ryan Pace if he pulls off another impressive offseason move.

Former WFT RT Morgan Moses visiting the Bears on Wednesday

The Bears are hosting veteran OT Morgan Moses on Wednesday as the team looks for its starting right tackle.

The Chicago Bears have plenty of questions at offensive line, particularly the offensive tackle position, and they’re exploring all avenues, and there are some quality veterans on the market.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Washington Football Team offensive tackle Morgan Moses is scheduled to visit the Bears on Wednesday. Moses was recently released by Washington after they sought a potential trade for the right tackle. Now, Chicago gets a crack at luring him to a Bears offensive line currently in search of a right tackle.

Moses, 30, played well for Washington last season and has been one of the more consistent players on their offensive line. He’s a versatile lineman, who has played at swing tackle or has started at right or even left tackle. Moses finished as the 18th highest-graded tackle in the NFL in 2020, according to PFF.

While the Bears currently have just $219,000 in salary cap space, former left tackle Charles Leno’s release is set to go into effect post-June 1 and will free up $9 million in cap space, which would allow Chicago the ability to add a quality veteran offensive tackle like Moses.

Washington coach Ron Rivera speaks after Washington’s OTAs

The Washington Football Team returned to the field for Phase 3 of their offseason program on Monday.

The Washington Football Team returned to the field for Phase 3 of their offseason program on Monday. On Tuesday, the media was invited to practice for Washington’s first day of on-field work at the voluntary portion of OTAs.

After practice, Washington head coach Ron Rivera spoke to the local media and discussed several topics, from new quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to the releases of offensive tackles Morgan Moses and Geron Christian.

Moses, who had started every game for Washington since 2015, was released last week.

Rivera discussed the release of Moses and said it was not related to personal reasons or performance but more about the team wanting to go in a different, younger direction.

“Nothing other than we’re just going in a different direction. We have an opportunity to get some young guys on the field,” Rivera said.

Rivera was speaking about rookie offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi, who was selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. After Washington drafted Cosmi, it also signed veteran offensive tackle Charles Leno to play left tackle presumably.

Cosmi is expected to play right tackle, although that is far from a given. The release of Moses saves the Football Team around $8 million in 2021.

Washington had outstanding attendance for the voluntary OTAs, with 86 of 91 players participating. Two of the notable absences were star defensive ends Chase Young and Montez Sweat.

Rivera isn’t worried about that.

Finally, Rivera got to see his starting quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, in practice for the first time. And the head coach was pleased.

Overall, Rivera enjoyed getting his team back on the practice field for the first time since January and having the opportunity to see some of the WFT’s top offseason acquisitions in action.

Washington releases veteran offensive tackle Morgan Moses

The Washington Football Team released longtime starting offensive tackle Morgan Moses on Thursday, just days after he was granted permission

The Washington Football Team released longtime starting right tackle Morgan Moses on Thursday, just days after he was granted permission to seek a trade.

Moses, a third-round pick out of Virginia in the 2014 NFL draft, started at right tackle in all but one game for Washington since the season-opener in 2015. In the one game Moses didn’t start at right tackle; he was playing left tackle in 2020 in place of the injured Cornelius Lucas.

Moses had two years left on a five-year, $38.5 million extension he signed with the WFT in April 2017.

Moses should have a solid market in free agency. He is coming off one of his best seasons as a pro in 2020.

Washington’s release of Moses has more to do with money and the other new additions on the offensive line. The WFT signed Charles Leno in free agency to play left tackle, while WFT’s second-round pick, Samuel Cosmi, is expected to replace Moses on the right side in 2021.

Lucas returns as Washington’s swing tackle.

Washington also released offensive tackle Geron Christian on Thursday. Christian, a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, has yet to establish himself at the NFL level.

Second-year pro Saahdiq Charles can play offensive tackle, but Washington projects him at guard. His versatility gives offensive line coach John Matsko more options.

Bengals should be all over recently released OT Morgan Moses

The Cincinnati Bengals should pursue Morgan Moses in free agency.

If the Cincinnati Bengals want a shot at offensive tackle Morgan Moses, now would be the time to do it.

Washington just cut the veteran tackle. Before that obvious move, he was the subject of trade speculation and we broke down why the Bengals shouldn’t trade for him — but add him if he hits free agency.

And he’s available on the market now.

The Bengals should be all over it. They won’t have to give up trade assets or inhale his original big salary. And they would add a veteran who had a 80.6 PFF grade last year.

There are negatives, sure. The Bengals want to save cash for extensions. They already have a right tackle with Riley Reiff, too. But if the objective is to put the best possible five in front of Joe Burrow, they can’t reasonably not check in on Moses if he’s on the market.

Maybe the Bengals get outbid because starting-caliber tackles like Moses are pretty rare. But at least trying would be a good sign the Bengals are not opposed to further improvements when it comes to protecting the franchise’s most valuable commodity.

Morgan Moses says Dwayne Haskins can ‘win the locker room back’ with win Sunday

Morgan Moses thinks that if Dwayne Haskins can help Washington find a win on Sunday, he can potentially ‘win the locker room back.’

A long and drama-filled week is now behind us in Washington, and it’s time to get down to business. We at long last know who is going to start for the Washington Football Team, and it will be second-year QB Dwayne Haskins who gets a big opportunity with starting QB Alex Smith likely to be inactive with a calf strain.

This gives Haskins yet another big opportunity, though we don’t quite know how much he will be able to do with this one. Veteran RT Morgan Moses, who is one of the biggest emotional leaders in the locker room, recently said that Haskins has a chance to win back the team after an indefensible mistake left the team at risk this past week with the QB breaking COVID-protocols to attend a birthday party.

It would be a great story for Haskins to come out on Sunday and lead Washington to a win, helping them clinch their first playoff appearance since 2015, but operating under the assumption that that scenario plays out, where do we go from there?

What if Haskins does get back in the good graces of his teammates, what then? There’s likely no scenario where Haskins is still on the team in 2021, as Washington will assuredly move on and go in a different direction, so is it all about pride?

At this point, probably so, but that is still a meaningful thing in the NFL, especially when Haskins will likely have to win over a new locker room in the coming years. We’ll see if he can win back his old locker room with a solid performance on Sunday in what could be Washington’s biggest game of the year.
