Former MLBer Monte Harrison, 29, to play football at Arkansas

You probably watched Harrison hit a baseball for the Marlins or Angels. Now you’ll see him catch a football for the Razorbacks.

Monte Harrison won’t be scared, that’s for sure.

The man who spent nine seasons playing professional baseball, including stints in the Major Leagues with Miami and Los Angeles of Anaheim, committed Tuesday to play college football at Arkansas.

College. Football.

Harrison, who lives in Kansas City, was a four-star wide receiver recruit in high school in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Nebraska offered him a chance to play football and baseball for the Cornhuskers. But the Milwaukee Brewers drafted him in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft and Harrison chose to sign.

He had been playing professional baseball ever since. His last stop was in the 2023 season with Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate the Nashville Sounds. Harrison played with the Angels for parts of the 2022 season and with the Marlins for parts of 2021 and 2020.

Harrison will get an opportunity back out at his spot of wide receiver when arrives to Fayetteville. Arkansas returned every wideout who caught a pass in 2023, so it may take a bit for Harrison to crack the rotation.

But it’s probably not as hard as hitting Major-League pitching.

Marlins minor leaguer made an absolutely unreal catch after scaling a wall when he didn’t need to

Bad read, awesome catch.

Marlins outfield prospect Monte Harrison has played 41 big-league games. He’s spent much of this season with the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (what a name!) where he pulled off one of the more incredible and needlessly difficult catches you’ll ever see.

During Saturday’s game between the Jumbo Shrimp and the Charlotte Knights, Harrison had a beat on a deep, two-out drive to center field. Harrison clearly thought that Deivy Grullon got more of the pitch than he actually did because Harrison timed his approach and scaled the wall in hopes of robbing a home run at the very top.

The ball, though, was just heading to the warning track.

While at the top of the wall, Harrison quickly realized that he misjudged the ball a bit and reached down and forward to make the grab. He played off the catch so casually too, which had the broadcasting team confused.

Unnecessary wall-scaling aside, it was still a phenomenal catch and great adjustment.

You just know that Harrison saw that wall-scaling opportunity with the railing beyond the fence before the game and wanted to try it out when he had the chance.

The man just really wanted to scale a wall, and there’s nothing wrong with it. It would have been up there with this catch from Masato Akamatsu in Japan.

But hey, a standing grab in front of the wall would have been way less fun. Keep on scaling walls, Monte.
