UFC Fight Night 220 video: Tatiana Suarez taps out Montana De La Rosa after multi-year layoff, eyes title

Tatiana Suarez shined in her return to competition from a 1,258-day layoff when she finished Montana De La Rosa at UFC Fight Night 220.

[autotag]Tatiana Suarez[/autotag] shined in her return to competition from a 1,258-day layoff on Saturday when she finished [autotag]Montana De La Rosa[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 220.

Nearly four years after she last competed, Suarez (9-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) came back to the octagon and got a definitive win when she locked in a guillotine choke on De La Rosa (12-8-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC) in the second round of the women’s flyweight bout, which took place at the UFC Apex.

After De La Rosa showed some resistance in the opening round, Suarez found her form in the second frame. She took control of the grappling and then found her way into the choke to finish the job.

“I’m so happy,” Suarez said in her post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “I’ve been dreaming about this for a long time. I wasn’t able to fight, and it’s really hard when you can’t do what you love to do the most. I know what it’s like to lose one dream, and I didn’t want to lose another.”

Suarez competed at 125 pounds for this fight due to all the time off from the octagon, but she made it clear she’s on the way back down to strawweight for the next one, and intends to resume her title run in that weight class.

“I’m coming for the belt,” Suarez said. “115 here I come. Im going to come back down. I’m going to do what I know I can be, and be the world champion.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Don’Tale Mayes[/autotag] (9-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) fights [autotag]Augusto Sakai[/autotag] (15-5-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) in a heavyweight bout that is the most contentious among our staff members, and it’s still a relative blowout. Sakai is just a slight favorite at -130, but he has a big 8-3 lead from our pickers.

Our lone unanimous pick on the main card is [autotag]Tatiana Suarez[/autotag] (8-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC), who is a massive 8-1 favorite over [autotag]Montana De La Rosa[/autotag] (12-7-1 MMA, 5-3-1 UFC) in their women’s flyweight fight.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Yohan Lainesse[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) takes on [autotag]Mike Malott[/autotag] (8-1-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a welterweight fight between a pair of Canadians. Malott is more than a 2-1 favorite, and he has a big 9-2 edge in the picks.

Montana De La Rosa says Tatiana Suarez ‘the one with the pressure’ before UFC Fight Night 220

Montana De La Rosa is very much looking forward to the most high-profile fight of her career against Tatiana Suarez.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Montana De La Rosa[/autotag] has been out of action for longer than she hoped, but she’ll return to the most high-profile matchup of her career when she meets [autotag]Tatiana Suarez[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 220.

De La Rosa (12-7-1 MMA, 5-3-1 UFC) and undefeated Suarez (8-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will meet in a women’s flyweight bout on the ESPN+ main card Saturday at the UFC Apex. The attention surrounding the fight has almost all to do with the highly touted Suarez, who is competing in the octagon for the first time in three-and-a-half years.

Prior to the layoff, Suarez’s grappling prowess garnered comparisons to Khabib Nurmagomedov, and she was pegged by many as a future UFC strawweight champion.

For that reason, De La Rosa believes all the pressure heading into the fight is on Suarez to deliver.

“There’s not any pressure for me. If anything, she’s the one with the pressure,” De La Rosa told reporters, including MMA Junkie, on Wednesday at UFC Fight Night 220 media day. “I mean, everyone says she’s the next Khabib or the woman Khabib, so I think she has a lot of expectations to live up to in this fight on Saturday.”

[lawrence-related id=2618588,2608841]

De La Rosa, who lost to Maycee Barber her last time out, is making her return to the cage after a 10-month layoff, which she said was due to “some injuries” and “some medical stuff.” She’s back healthy now and ready to compete.

When the UFC approached her 12 weeks ago with the Suarez offer, De La Rosa jumped at the opportunity to welcome her back and to a higher division.

“Just that she’s a big name, you know. She’s undefeated,” De La Rosa said of why she was excited to face Suarez. “She kind of is one dimensional. I mean, obviously the best at what she does, but I just feel like there’s a lot of things that I can do in there that she hasn’t seen before, especially when she’s moving up to the flyweight division when she’s just been facing smaller opponents. …

“I think she’s physically going to be very strong, because she was dominating at 115. But I’m used to very strong opponents. She’s obviously faced Carla (Esparza), who’s a really great wrestler, but she’s so small, and I think it’s gonna be different when she faces someone who has a wrestling background like me, as well as good striking and good jiu-jitsu, as well.”

UFC Fight Night 205 results: Maycee Barber grinds out decision win against Montana De La Rosa

Maycee Barber makes it two in a row, outpointing Montana De La Rosa at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 205.

The momentum continues to build for [autotag]Maycee Barber[/autotag].

“The Future” picked up a unanimous decision win over [autotag]Montana De La Rosa[/autotag] on the main card of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 205 in Las Vegas. Barber (9-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) outpointed De La Rosa (12-6-1 MMA, 5-2-1 UFC) 30-27 on all three judges’ scorecards.

It was a grueling affair that had both fighters fighting at close quarters for the majority of their 15-minute flyweight bout.

De La Rosa looked to close the distance and force Barber to wrestle. The 23-year-old was content grappling with De La Rosa. And although Barber was controlled for certain portions of the fight, she was able to get a slight edge in the wrestling plus managed to do more damage than De La Rosa in all three rounds.

The first and third were pretty strong rounds by Barber. The closest round of the contest was the second where De La Rosa was able to take Barber’s back and establish a good amount of control.

[lawrence-related id=2540979,2540882]

With this result, Barber is now on a two-fight winning streak, putting behind the pair of consecutive defeats that marked the first losses of her career. Barber was undefeated until she came up short in back-to-back decisions against Roxanne Modafferi in 2020 and then Alexa Grasso in 2021.

Meanwhile, De La Rosa suffered her first defeat since 2020. She was coming off a technical knockout win over Ariane Lipski at UFC Fight Night 189 in June and prior to that, she fought to a draw in a bout against Brazil’s Mayra Bueno Silva.
