Steelers vs. Patriots: Mitch Trubisky named starter vs. New England on TNF

Mitch Trubisky will start at QB as the Steelers host the New England Patriots on TNF.

A surprise to no one, Mike Tomlin officially named Mitch Trubisky the starter this week as Kenny Pickett is sidelined with a high-ankle sprain.

As to why it’s Trubisky, the answer is simple. He’s second on the QB depth chart and there are only so many reps to go around.

“You can’t give work to three guys,” Tomlin told Steelers media in his Monday press conference. “Most of Mason Rudolph’s work comes on scout team offense, so Mitch has been positioned to get the work.”

Tomlin said the Steelers will explore options over the next 24 hours for emergency/third quarterback.

Trubisky passed for 117 yards and a touchdown in relief of Pickett versus the Arizona Cardinals and will be tasked to do the same when the Steelers take on the New England Patriots and their top-10 defense.

In 10 games (five starts) in the Black and Gold, Trubisky is 2-3, passing for 1,525 yards and six touchdowns to seven interceptions. He’s come in three times for Pickett in 2023, but Thursday will be his first start of the season.

Unfortunately, it’s a short week, so although Trubisky will get first-team reps, it’ll be accelerated with only one day of practice.

The Patriots are eighth in total defense, allowing 221 passing yards and 21 per game.

Mike Tomlin provides update on injured Kenny Pickett, Steelers QB situation

Mike Tomlin provided an update on Kenny Pickett and named Mitch Trubisky the starter vs. the New England Patriots.

Kenny Pickett exited with an injury the fifth game of his short career, this time a high ankle sprain that required surgery Monday morning.

The injury occurred after another errant snap by center Mason Cole (who had multiple on the day). As protection broke down, Pickett saw an opportunity to score and took it. Unfortunately, he fell short of the goal line and further injured his ankle in the process.

Mike Tomlin addressed the topic in a press conference on Monday, sharing that the surgery was completed to speed up the healing process.

Mitch Trubisky, who threw for 117 yards and a touchdown versus the Cardinals, will start the “Thursday Night Football” matchup against the New England Patriots which boasts a top-10 defense.

Steelers QB Kenny Pickett suffers leg injury

Mitch Trubisky is in for Kenny Pickett.

With just five minutes to go in the first half against the Arizona Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett suffered an apparent leg injury as he fought for a touchdown, being pulled down at the goal line. Pickett was able to come off on his own power and went straight to the medical tent.

According to the television broadcast, Pickett was barely able to put any weight on his ankle as he headed to the tent. They also noted that leg was already wrapped prior to the injury indicating this is probably the same ankle he was dealing with after last week’s game.

Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky bails on press conference

Once Mitch Trubisky heard Kenny Pickett say he was playing, he didn’t see a need to speak to the media.

On Tuesday, several members of the Pittsburgh Steelers spoke to the press including quarterback Kenny Pickett. The Steelers are hustling to prepare to take on the Tennessee Titans this week on Thursday Night Football.

One player who was supposed to address the media was quarterback Mitch Trubisky. It only made sense considering he finished the game on Sunday after Pickett was knocked out of the game and was in line to start Thursday.

But when Pickett told everyone he was planning to play on Thursday, Trubisky reconsidered and bailed on the interview. Hard to fault the guy because what exactly does he have to talk about the potential of him starting is no longer there.

The odd part is it is obvious that Trubisky was unaware of what Pickett was going to say. Ultimately it will be the team that decides if Pickett is healthy enough to play but there doesn’t seem to be any benefit of this lack of communication.

Dan Orlovsky: DJ Moore will add another dimension to Justin Fields’ game

ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky explained how the arrival of DJ Moore will help Justin Fields.

It’s been a long time since Chicago Bears fans had such high hopes for their team’s quarterback.

There have been quarterbacks who’ve come to the city with moderately lofty expectations, like Jay Cutler or Mitchell Trubisky, but the fanbase never fooled themselves into thinking Chicago could potentially have an All-Pro type of passer. At least, not until Justin Fields put on the uniform.

The fanbase is not the only entity that has a fervor for the Bears’ QB1, as the national sports media has been smitten with Fields and the leaps he may take as a dual threat passer this season. Even as recent as a couple of days ago, ESPN host Mike Greenberg planted his flag firmly in Fields’ camp, claiming that Fields will be the “next superstar quarterback in the NFL.”

ESPN analyst and former quarterback Dan Orlovsky continued the media’s rally behind Fields, making the case for why Chicago’s acquisition of wide receiver DJ Moore will add another dimension to Fields’ game this upcoming season.

Orlovsky’s NFL experience clearly shaped the three points he discussed in the segment, because his reasonings for how Moore will benefit Fields are all predictive; not about any particular statistic related to Fields or Moore, but rather how just the mere of presence of the former Panthers receiver will add much-needed complexity to the offense.

The fanbase is already brimming with excitement for the Fields and Moore show to take their explosive connection to Soldier Field on Sundays. And the media’s assurance that Moore will be a major factor for Fields to take off next season only makes the wait until week one against the Packers all the more difficult.

Around the North: Steelers finalize an extension for QB Mitch Trubisky

Trubisky is getting a two-year extension putting him in Pittsburgh for three more seasons.

While appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan announced the team is working on an extension for quarterback Mitch Trubisky. This comes in the same week as the team deciding to bring back Mason Rudolph for a sixth season with the team. That deal is now done.

With Kenny Pickett set to remain the starter it is clear the Cleveland Browns’ rivals in Pittsburgh want established veterans to back him up. Trubisky struggled last season and could not keep Pickett from taking the starting job for long. However he has shown that in the right situation he can give you quality starts and tread water if Pickett goes down. Trubisky is getting a two-year extension on top of his current year for a contract worth up to $33 million.

Mitch Trubisky set to sign extension with Pittsburgh Steelers

Former UNC football quarterback Mitch Trubisky has signed an extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Former North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky will stay in the Steel City a little longer.

Trubisky and the Pittsburgh Steelers are close to an agreement on a two-year extension, as it should be done soon. General manager Omar Khan revealed the update while appearing on The Pat McAfee show on Thursday.

“We feel good about our quarterback room and that was an important piece,” Khan said per All Steelers. “Kenny Pickett’s our starter and we feel really good about Mitch Trubisky in the role he’s in, and he feels good about it.”

Shortly after the appearance, Ian Rapoport confirmed that it will be a two-year extension that will lower Trubisky’s $10.6 million cap hit this season.

After being selected No. 2 in the 2017 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears, Trubisky spent four seasons in the Windy City. The Bears did not pick up his rookie option and he signed a deal with the Buffalo Bills before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Trubisky started 5 games for the Steelers a year ago, going 2-3. The franchise has turned over the starting job to Kenny Pickett who is going into his second season in the NFL. But having Trubisky on the roster as a backup is not a bad thing.

ILB Roquan Smith gets first interception as a Raven in Week 14 vs. Steelers

Ravens inside linebacker Roquan Smith got his first interception as a member of the team in Week 14

The Pittsburgh Steelers were driving deep in Baltimore Ravens territory late in the second quarter of a 10-7 game in Week 14.  Steelers backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky tried to find tight end Pat Freiermuth, but linebacker Roquan Smith jumped and picked it off.  It was Smith’s first interception as a Raven, and third on the season.

The interception set up a 35-yard field goal by Justin Tucker to give the Ravens a 13-7 lead with a minute left in the half.  Before the field goal, Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley connected with receiver DeSean Jackson for 25 yards on a third and seven.

After the first two drives of the game, it looked like the Raven’s defense could dominate rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett, but he left the game with a concussion. Trubisky made some nice throws before Smith’s crucial interception to stop a potential scoring drive to tie the game.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh raves about team following Week 14 win vs. Steelers

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh gave out plenty of praise to his team following their Week 14 win against the Steelers

The Baltimore Ravens beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-14 in a hard-fought game in Week 14 of the 2022 season.  Both teams lost their initial starting quarterbacks in the contest, so it ended up being Anthony Brown vs. Mitch Trubisky at the end, as they replaced Tyler Huntley and Kenny Pickett respectively.

There were many reasons why Baltimore was able to come out of Pittsburgh with a victory, as multiple players stepped up when needed. Head coach John Harbaugh spoke to the media right after the game and was proud of his team for overcoming injuries to win the game, raving about his team’s character and toughness.

“…Just a shoutout to the great environment, the experience here in Pittsburgh and the amazing rivalry that this is. We appreciate it, and we appreciate victories like this in this environment against Pittsburgh because we have respect for them and for the rivalry. I’m very proud of our guys. I think it was the kind of victory that you can attribute to heart and character and toughness and finding a way to get the job done, and never giving up, and never flinching and having each other’s back in the end. So, a lot of guys stepped up; the two guys in this room obviously – Anthony Brown and J.K. Dobbins – stepped up in a big way when we needed it the most. That drive in the fourth quarter will go down in history as one of the great drives in this rivalry. It will in my mind, I promise you that. So, I’m proud of everybody; I appreciate everybody; [I] trust everybody on this team, love this team. [I] love this team; I love every guy on this team and trust and believe in every guy on this team. We’re very, very proud of this victory. Past that, we’re moving on to Cleveland. That’s next, and that’s our next challenge in Cleveland…”

The game was Brown’s first NFL action after being elevated from the practice squad on Saturday. The running game took control once he was inserted in the lineup for Huntley, but he played mistake free and made a few big-time throws.

Baltimore will face off against the Cleveland Browns in Week 15, and it could be Brown at the helm depending on how Huntley does during the week after suffering a concussion.
