First look: Missouri at Alabama odds and lines

Looking at Saturday’s Missouri at Alabama college football odds, lines and trends. Here’s what you need to know.

The 17th-ranked Missouri Tigers (6-1, 2-1 Big 12) face the 15th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (5-2, 2-2) Saturday in a battle that could serve as an elimination game for one of these teams’ playoff hopes. Kickoff from Bryant-Denny Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. (ABC). Below, we look at Missouri vs. Alabama odds from BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds before making our expert college football picks and predictions later in the week.

Missouri survived a couple of scares last week. The first was a 21-17 home victory against the Auburn Tigers Saturday in which Mizzou trailed 17-3 early in the 3rd quarter. The second was QB Brady Cook going down early in the 1st quarter with an ankle injury. He spent nearly 2 hours in real-time out of the game and at a hospital for an MRI before returning to the field and rallying his squad to victory — Mizzou covered as a 3.5-point favorite. Meanwhile, star WR Luther Burden III was held to just 6 catches for 49 yards on 11 targets. Mizzou probably needs to win this game to get back into playoff consideration.

Alabama found itself on the opposite side of the pendulum with a 24-17 loss at Tennessee — ‘Bama was a 3.5-point favorite. The Tide have lost 2 of 3 and failed to cover in all 3. Freshman WR Ryan Williams turned a whopping 20 targets into 8 grabs for 73 yards and a score. A loss for Alabama here would effectively end its playoff hopes.

Georgia at Missouri head-to-head

These SEC East rivals have played every year since Missouri joined the SEC in 2012. Missouri has only defeated Georgia once in the 10 games since, back in 2013. Georgia has defeated Missouri by 14 or more points in each meeting since 2017.

Mizzou has actually covered the spread 6 times across those 10 games, including last season when it narrowly covered as a 40.5-point underdog. Georgia and Mizzou have hit the Over in 6 of those 10 matchups but went 10.5 points under their projected 59.5-point total last season.

In 2022, both teams are 2-2 ATS. Georgia did not cover against Samford or Kent State but easily covered against Oregon and South Carolina. Mizzou covered against Louisiana Tech and as underdogs against Auburn last week but failed to cover by a wide margin against Kansas State and Abilene Christian.

Neither squad has been good at hitting the Over in total points this season. The only time either team went Over was when Mizzou and Louisiana Tech went 14 points over their projected 62-point total.

Dating back to last season, the Vols are 1-4 across their last five road games outside the state of Tennessee.

The Tigers are coming off a 41-34 overtime setback at Boston College and are looking for their first win of the season against an FBS opponent. Missouri’s defense has been a problem area. The Tigers have coughed up 454.3 total yards per game; that average ranks 116th in the nation. On the other side of the ball, Mizzou has been solid: their 483.0 total yards per game rank 20th.

Tennessee at Missouri head-to-head

The Volunteers won last year’s game, going wire-to-wire in a 35-12 contest in Knoxville, Tenn. They have won two straight in a series that dates back to 2012.

Tennessee nearly doubled up the host Tigers in yardage in their last visit to Mizzou (a 24-20 Vols win Nov. 23, 2019). In that game, UT outgained Missouri, 526 yards to 280.

The favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six series meetings. Recent games have not been close from a betting standpoint: the average ATS margin over those last half-dozen games is 12.8 points per game.
