UFC on ESPN 27 results: Maycee Barber snaps skid by split decision, calls out Jessica Eye

Maycee Barber avoided a third straight loss by the narrowest of margins when she edged Miranda Maverick at UFC on ESPN 27.

[autotag]Maycee Barber[/autotag] avoided a third straight loss by the narrowest of margins Saturday when she edged [autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 27.

After dropping back-to-back fights, Barber (9-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) was in a must-win scenario against Maverick (9-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC), despite being just 23. It was tooth and nail over three rounds, but in the end two of the judges thought her work was better and gave her the split decision with a pair of 29-28 scores. A third judge scored the fight for Maverick.

The women’s flyweight bout was part of the UFC on ESPN 27 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.

Both women came out trying to test the other’s range. Maverick loaded up heavy on head and body kick attempts, while Barber skirted around the outside and looked to move in and out with punching combinations. Maverick’s pressure started to breed success in the latter minutes of the round when she found her range and a home for the better blows.

Maverick tried to pick up right where she left off in the second frame. She closed the distance on Barber with straight punches and kicks, while Barber did her best to counter and step in with bigger shots that were off the target. They tied up in the clinch toward the midway point of the round, and that allowed some momentum for Barber as she landed some good shots from in close. Maverick broke away late, though, and managed to secure a takedown that led her to back control, but she couldn’t finish a rear-naked choke attempt.

With momentum on her side going into the final round, Maverick ensured she stayed sharp. Barber tried to make it ugly by pushing inside to force the clinch and throw big punches, and she managed to land a good one with roughly three minutes left. It set up a Barber takedown, and some control on the mat and against the fence in what was her biggest moments of the fight. Maverick was definitely struggling late, and the judges seemingly found that to be the determining aspect in scoring the fight in her favor.

Despite the controversy, Barber said she thought she won the fight, and targeted former UFC women’s flyweight title challenger Jessica Eye with a callout.

“I did actually (think I won the decision), especially with that last round,” Barber said in her post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “Jessica Eye is No. 8 (in the UFC rankings). I would like that fight.”

UFC adds Maycee Barber vs. Miranda Maverick to July 24 event

Two of the women’s flyweight division’s most notable up-and-comers will collide.

Two of the UFC women’s flyweight division’s most notable prospects are set to square off this summer.

[autotag]Maycee Barber[/autotag] and [autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag] will fight at the promotion’s July 24 event, which doesn’t currently have a location or venue at this time. UFC president Dana White informed broadcast partner ESPN of the booking Tuesday.

Barber (8-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) is coming off two-straight unanimous decision losses. In January 2020, Barber was defeated by former UFC women’s flyweight title challenger Roxanne Modafferi. In that fight, Barber injured her knee, and as a result, was out of action for 13 months. When she returned in February 2021, she was defeated by Mexico’s Alexa Grasso.

Maverick (9-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is off to a hot start in her UFC career. At UFC 254 in October, Maverick debuted and defeated Liana Jojua by TKO at the end of the first round due to a cut. She returned March 27 at UFC 260 and won a unanimous decision against Gillian Robertson.

With the addition, the July 24 lineup includes:

  • Macy Chiasson vs. Aspen Ladd
  • Maycee Barber vs. Miranda Maverick

Callout Collection: Who UFC 260 winners want next – and how likely they’ll get them

Francis Ngannou and Vicente Luque were among those who name-dropped their preferred next opponents at UFC 260 in Las Vegas.

Earning wins in the UFC is certainly no easy task, but what comes next is often even more important: the post-fight callout.

So, after Saturday’s UFC 260 event in Las Vegas, who took advantage of their time on the mic?

See below for this week’s Callout Collection – and just how realistic each one is.

UFC 260 results: Prospect Miranda Maverick outpoints Gillian Robertson

Women’s flyweight prospect Miranda Maverick outworked Gillian Robertson for a unanimous decision.

[autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag] continues to prove why she’s regarded as a bright prospect in the UFC women’s flyweight division.

The 23-year-old picked up her second UFC win when she outpointed [autotag]Gillian Robertson[/autotag] to a unanimous decision at UFC 260. Maverick (9-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) won with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

The women’s flyweight bout was part of the UFC 260 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

In the first round, Maverick controlled most of the action. She kept the center of the octagon and landed solid combinations on Robertson (9-6 MMA, 6-4 UFC) for the majority of the round. Maverick also scored two takedowns late in the round.

But in the second round, there was a clear momentum shift in favor of Robertson. The 25-year-old took down Maverick early and controlled her for more than four minutes. Maverick constantly was defending submissions and getting out of back control, but Robertson was relentless. Maverick landed a good combination at the end of the round and was able to get back on the feet for a few seconds before the bell.

[lawrence-related id=598877,598871]

Maverick started hot in the third and landed a few heavy shots on Robertson. There was a takedown attempt from Robertson, but Maverick managed to defend and got on top for ground-and-pound. Robertson created scrambles and attempted to reverse position, but Maverick seemed to be a step ahead.

With the win, Maverick is now on a four-fight winning streak. She debuted with the UFC this past October and beat Liana Jojua with a doctor’s stoppage. Maverick previously fought in Invicta FC, where she picked up victories over notable names like Pearl Gonzalez and DeAnna Bennett.

Robertson is on a two-fight skid after a loss to Taila Santos in December. Prior to that, Robertson had two consecutive victories.

UFC 260 Robertson vs. Maverick: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Robertson 9-5 | Maverick 10-2

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

MAVERICK (-165) made her company debut at UFC 254 on Fight Island on the Khabib-Gaethje card Oct. 24, 2020, winning via TKO – Doctor’s Stoppage with a vicious elbow against Liana Jojua. Jojua wasn’t happy with the decision by the referees. In any event, Maverick picked up her first-career KO/TKO in 12 professional fights, and it was her seventh stoppage overall with six submission wins.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under (O/U)

Robertson should give Maverick a much better run for her money. As the competition has picked up in her UFC career, the finishes have turned into decisions. She topped Poliana Botelho Oct. 17, 2020, and was dumped by UD against Taila Santos last time out Dec. 19, 2020. Before the Jojua fight, two of Maverick’s past three Invicta fights went the distance.

As such, playing YES (-145) ON ‘WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE?’ is the way to go. In addition, I also like MAVERICK ON POINTS (+135) for method of victory.

In the main event, heavyweight champion [autotag]Stipe Miocic[/autotag] (20-3 MMA, 14-3 UFC) puts his title on the line against [autotag]Francis Ngannou[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in a rematch from a fight from more than three years ago. Miocic won that fight by unanimous decision, but despite that, Ngannou is a -125 favorite at BetMGM. It’s the opposite from our 13 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts, though. From them, it’s Miocic with an 8-5 edge.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Vicente Luque[/autotag] (19-7-1 MMA, 12-3 UFC) is a -250 favorite against former welterweight champ [autotag]Tyron Woodley[/autotag] (19-6-1 MMA, 9-5-1 UFC), who has dropped three straight. Luque has a big picks lead at 10-3 from our staff members.

Also on the card, [autotag]Thomas Almeida[/autotag] (22-4 MMA, 5-4 UFC) takes on [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) in a bantamweight bout. O’Malley is the biggest favorite on the card at -300, and he’s a near-unanimous pick at 12-1.

[autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag] (8-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) takes on [autotag]Gillian Robertson[/autotag] (9-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC) in a women’s flyweight bout that was delayed a few weeks. Maverick is a -160 favorite, but Robertson has a big 9-4 lead from our pickers and the edge in our reader picks, as well.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Jamie Mullarkey[/autotag] (12-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) will look for his first UFC win against [autotag]Khama Worthy[/autotag] (16-7 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in a lightweight bout. Worthy only is a -135 favorite – but he’s our only unanimous pick on the main card at 13-0.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Miocic (68 percent), Luque (72 percent), O’Malley (67 percent), Robertson (53 percent) and Worthy (78 percent) are the choices.
