Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers open their seasons Tuesday. Tip-off from Crypto.com Arena is set for 10 p.m. ET (TNT). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NBA odds around the Timberwolves vs. Lakers odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Timberwolves won 3-1 last season

After losing to the Dallas Mavericks 4-1 in last season’s Western Conference Finals, the Timberwolves had an interesting offseason. They shipped 4-time All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks in exchange for F Julius Randle, G Donte DiVincenzo, Keita Bates-Diop — who was waived Monday — and a future 1st-round pick.

The Lakers were knocked out in the 1st round of the playoffs last season by the Denver Nuggets in 5 games. Los Angeles is returning virtually the same roster as last season, with the biggest addition being G Dalton Knecht who was selected 17th overall out of Tennessee in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Minnesota is tied with Dallas for the 6th-shortest odds to win the NBA Finals (+1200 at BetMGM Sportsbook), and the Lakers are tied with the Orlando Magic and Golden State Warriors for the 12th-shortest (+4000).

Timberwolves at Lakers picks and predictions

Prediction

Lakers 113, Timberwolves 110

Moneyline

Betting the ML in this game really comes down to how you feel about the Towns-Randle trade. The market is projecting that Minnesota will be the 3rd- to 4th-best team in the West without Towns this season — I think they’re a little worse than that.

While G Anthony Edwards is coming off a career year, leading Minnesota to the conference finals and averaging 25.9 PPG, it’s hard to bet him as a road favorite when his supporting cast is full of semi-question marks and players past their primes.

I’d rather back F LeBron James, F Anthony Davis and the continuity of the Lakers roster as home underdogs than lay -115 and hope Minnesota got better by subtraction.

BET LAKERS (-105).

Against the spread

This spread is so short that the Lakers will likely win straight up if they cover.

PASS. Bet the ML and/or total instead.

Over/Under

Despite Minnesota finishing 1st in defensive efficiency last season, its totals were closing a bit too low, making the Timberwolves a pretty decent Over bet. Minnesota was 27-22 (55.1%) to the Over in road games last season, while the Lakers were 22-20-1 (52.4%) at home.

The continuity on the Lakers’ roster should lead to more scoring this season and ultimately help the Over hit in their home opener Tuesday.

BET OVER 222.5 (-105).

Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Minnesota Timberwolves at LA Lakers odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 7 Los Angeles Lakers welcome the No. 8 Minnesota Timberwolves to Crypto.com Arena Tuesday. Tip from the 1st Western Conference play-in tournament action is set for 10 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Timberwolves vs. Lakers odds, and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

The Lakers didn’t always look like a playoff team this season, but finished strong by winning 9 of their last 11 games. They were 6-5 against the spread (ATS) in that span and 9-2 O/U. They finished the season 43-39 straight up, 40-41-1 ATS and 43-38-1 O/U. The Lakers are led by F LeBron James (28.9 points per game) and F Anthony Davis (25.9 PPG).

The Timberwolves made national news as C Rudy Gobert threw a punk at F Kyle Anderson in the team’s 113-108 win over the New Orleans Pelicans Sunday. Gobert will serve a 1-game suspension. Minnesota did cover as 3.5-point home favorites and this season the Wolves were 42-40 straight up, 40-42 ATS and 38-43-1 O/U. They ended up winning 7 of their last 10 and were 6-4 ATS in that span.

Timberwolves at Lakers picks and predictions

Prediction

Lakers 119, Timberwolves 116

Moneyline

AVOID.

The Wolves have a talented team and many big-time shotmakers. However, the Lakers were 23-18 and will have Davis on the court without Gobert there to defend.

Ultimately, the Lakers -350 is too expensive and the Wolves at +270 isn’t quite enough value to play.

Against the spread

LEAN TIMBERWOLVES +8.5 (-115).

The Lakers were just 21-20 ATS at home this season and 1-3 ATS over their last 4 games. The Wolves have covered 3 straight games and 5 of their last 8.

They should also be a strong public fade given the news on Gobert. The Wolves were actually 8-4 straight up without Gobert in the lineup, potentially giving them a more spread-out offense.

The Wolves may also have a size and physicality advantage. They rank 7th in points in the paint while the Lakers give up the 23rd most in that regard. They should be able to use that to their advantage.

Considering the strengths and recent trends for both sides, take TIMBERWOLVES +8.5 (-115).

Over/Under

BET OVER 231.5 (-110).

In the NBA, the total often relies heavily on the pace, and both will bring it in this battle. Since the All-Star break, the Wolves rank 11th and the Lakers 12th in pace. Both sides also rank 17th and 13th in true shooting percentage, so each has been competent offensively since the break.

The Lakers have gone Over in 8 straight games while the Wolves have gone Over in 6 of their last 12. The pace and playmaking should be there, and given the trends as of late, take the OVER 231.5 (-110).

Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Minnesota Timberwolves (32-32) and Los Angeles Lakers (30-33) meet Friday at Crypto.com Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Timberwolves vs. Lakers odds, and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

The Timberwolves covered the spread as 6.5-point underdogs Tuesday in a 108-101 win at the Los Angeles Clippers. F Jaden McDaniels scored a team-high 20 points as Minnesota snapped its 3-game losing skid. The Timberwolves are 0-5 against the spread (ATS) in their last 5 games after a win.

The Lakers covered as 3.5-point underdogs Wednesday in a 123-117 win at the Oklahoma City Thunder. G Dennis Schröder finished with a game-high 26 points for the Lakers, who were without F LeBron James (foot), C Anthony Davis (foot) and G D’Angelo Russell (ankle). Los Angeles is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games.

This is the 2nd meeting this season between these teams. Minnesota covered as an 8-point home favorite with a 111-102 win as the Under (232) cashed in the 1st meeting Oct. 28. The Timberwolves have won 4 of the last 5 meetings vs. the Lakers.

Timberwolves at Lakers picks and predictions

Prediction

Lakers 115, Timberwolves 106

Moneyline

BET LAKERS (-105).

Los Angeles showed the depth it added at the trade deadline with double-digit scoring performances from G Malik Beasley (11 points) and C Mo Bamba (12) vs. Oklahoma City last time out. While James being out for at least 3 weeks will hurt the Lakers’ postseason chances, Los Angeles will still be motivated to prove it has enough pieces to make a playoff push.

Add revenge as motivation and a well-rested Davis in the lineup, and the Lakers should have no problem beating a Timberwolves team that went the entire month of February without winning back-to-back games.

Against the spread

PASS.

The Lakers +1.5 (-115) should hit, but there is no need to take the points when Los Angeles should win straight up. Bet the moneyline and/or total instead.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 227.5 (-108).

The Under is 4-0 in Minnesota’s last 4 games and 4-1 in Los Angeles’ last 5 at home. The Under has hit in 5 straight meetings between these teams and should cash again Friday with James and Russell not in the lineup.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Los Angeles Lakers (7-5) host the Minnesota Timberwolves (3-7) Friday at Staples Center for a 10:30 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we look at the Timberwolves vs. Lakers odds and lines, and make our expert NBA picks, predictions, and bets.

Minnesota has lost six consecutive games, four of which by double digits. The T-Wolves are 2-8 ATS and 3-7 O/U with the 25th-ranked net rating (minus-4.7).

Two of Minnesota’s wins were the first two games of the season, and the T-Wolves were at home against teams ranked lower than them in net efficiency.

L.A. has won four of its past six games including back-to-back three-point overtime wins at home over the Charlotte Hornets Monday and the Miami Heat Wednesday. The Lakers are 4-8 ATS and 7-5 O/U with the 20th-ranked net rating (minus-0.6).

The Lakers have won and covered in all four meetings with the T-Wolves since acquiring Anthony Davis.

Timberwolves at Lakers odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Lakers 119, Timberwolves 111

Money line

PASS even though L.A. is the right side, but because the Lakers (-160) is a little too expensive. I wouldn’t rule out parlaying L.A.’s money line with another similarly priced favorite for a plus-money payout.

However, in this spot, I’ll stay away from the money line.

Against the spread

I think we are getting some value on the LAKERS -3.5 (-112) because of their bumpy start incorporating new pieces.

More specifically, everyone is dogging first-year Laker Russell Westbrook who had a vintage performance in his last game. Westbrook scored 25 points and added 12 rebounds and 14 assists vs. the Heat Wednesday.

It could be the start of a turnaround for Westbrook and the Lakers who’ve been heavily criticized in the media. Because of said criticism, L.A. is only favored 3.5 points when it was laying 7.5, 6, 10.5 and 10 points in its previous four games against Minnesota.

Granted, LeBron played in all four of those games, and he’ll probably miss Friday’s contest. But, AD only played once and he obliterated the T-Wolves back in 2019.

AD put up 50 points on 69.0% shooting with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. In AD’s 13 career games vs. Minnesota big Karl-Anthony Towns, Davis is averaging 31.8 points per game on 57.2% shooting.

Furthermore, every guard in the NBA can score on T-Wolves guard D’Angelo Russell, and Westbrook balls out vs. Russell.

In their 11 career head-to-head meetings, Westbrook’s teams are 10-1, and he is averaging 25.1 points, 10.0 rebounds and 10.8 assists per game.

Maybe I’m misreading the situation and this is a “trap game”. But, BET the LAKERS -3.5 (-112).

Over/Under

“LEAN” to the OVER 223.5 (-115) for a half-unit at most because the Lakers -3.5 (-112) is my favorite bet in this contest. That said, L.A. plays the fastest pace in the Association, and Minnesota’s pace clocks in at No. 11.

Plus the Lakers have the sixth-best 3-point percentage in the NBA and the T-Wolves have the second-highest 3-point rate. So, I’m expecting a lot of possessions and a lot of 3-pointers.

Timberwolves at Lakers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Timberwolves 122, Lakers 116

Money line (ML)

The Timberwolves picked up an impressive road win as 9-point underdogs vs. the Utah Jazz Saturday. Former Lakers PG D’Angelo Russell had a game-high 25 points with 6 assists in Minnesota’s 116-111 win over the Jazz.

The Lakers gifted themselves the first win of the season on Christmas against the Dallas Mavericks. Los Angeles drubbed Dallas, winning all four quarters, outrebounding the Mavs 53-27, shot 56% from the field and 48.7% from 3. SF LeBron James and Davis balled out, combining for 50 points, hitting 18 of 34 shots with 15 rebounds and 15 assists.

No AD Sunday is huge. His absence should make the Lakers cheaper than they are, especially if Minnesota’s Anthony Towns can play. KAT has struggled in his young career when he’s played against Lakers C Marc Gasol, but Gasol won’t be as much a factor this time around. Gasol is regressing defensively as he ages and has only played 15 minutes per in the first two games. Furthermore, the departures of C’s JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard will take their toll on the Lakers’ interior defense.

I’ll lightly bet TIMBERWOLVES (+333) for a quarter-unit with the plan of hitting the spread harder.

Against the spread (ATS)

Los Angeles hasn’t covered in four straight games following a win, which dates back to last regular season. Remember all the questions surrounding the Lakers heading into the playoffs last season?

Those questions were asked partially due to that 0-4 ATS trend because it highlights the inconsistency of the Lakers when they have nothing to play for. It’s the Sunday after a marquee Christmas game for the reigning champion Lakers in an awkward season with a short offseason. How much do they care about this game?

On the other hand, you know how amped Minnesota is to play the LA. GIMME TIMBERWOLVES +9.5 (-115) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

AD is one of the preseason favorites for Defense Player of the Year and his replacement—PF/C Montrezl Harrell—is the reigning Sixth Man of the Year, who is known for his offense and is a below-average defender. There’s going to be a lot of offense in this one. I’ll take OVER 229.5 (-110) for 1 unit.
