Former Buffs head coach Mike MacIntyre speaks on Colorado, Pac-12 football in The Athletic

Mike MacIntyre made a few interesting comments in The Athletic’s piece on Colorado football

It has now been well over three years since Mike MacIntyre was relieved as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. After spending a season at Ole Miss and two years at Memphis, he is now back in a head coaching role at Florida International University.

But on Monday, MacIntyre returned to the minds of Buffs fans when he was featured in an extensive piece on Colorado football written by The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel.

MacIntyre remarked that he received strong support while at CU. However, he also admitted that the area as a whole, including the Pac-12, wasn’t in conjunction.

“There’s a lot of good support there, but you wouldn’t say it’s in the top 20 of college football supporting areas, and the Pac-12 is just not as well-resourced as a couple of the other major conferences they’re trying to compete against. It’s harder to reload in that situation.”

The Pac-12 has certainly been at the bottom of Power 5 football in recent years, but there remains hope with new commissioner George Kilavkoff and the recent hype surrounding namely USC, Oregon and Utah. Can Karl Dorrell and the Buffs follow suit?

Remember Mike MacIntyre? He could soon resume his head coaching career

Former CU head coach Mike MacIntyre is possibly on the move

The Mike MacIntyre era, which lasted nearly six seasons until he was fired in 2018, was an interesting one for Colorado. Upon the Buffs’ 10-4 season in 2016, MacIntyre signed a 3-year, $16.25 million contract extension that was soon nullified (or bought out) when the Buffs lost six consecutive Pac-12 games in 2018.

Following his 30-44 tenure at Colorado, MacIntyre signed with Ole Miss to be its defensive coordinator. However, that lasted just one season when Lane Kiffin declined to retain him. The now 56-year-old coach just wrapped his second season as the defensive coordinator at Memphis.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that MacIntyre is a candidate for the vacant head coaching job at Florida International.

The Panthers finished winless in the Conference USA East this season and chose not to renew former head coach Butch Davis’ contract.

The gig, previously occupied by Mario Cristobal from 2007-12, could be a good landing spot for MacIntyre to resume his head coaching career.
