Report: Jags working on a deal to name Bucs’ Mike Caldwell their new DC

Doug Pederson’s staff seems to be coming together and he’s now set to hire his former teammate Mike Caldwell as the #Jaguars’ next defensive coordinator.

On Saturday, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson expressed his confidence in being able to put a staff together with no issues despite getting a later start than others, and it appears things are now coming together.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Jags are working towards hiring Tampa Bay Bucs inside linebackers coach Mike Caldwell as their defensive coordinator. The move will put Pederson with a former teammate of his, as well as an assistant he’s coached alongside with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Caldwell’s coaching career started in 2008 as a defensive quality controls coach under Andy Reid and the Eagles. The following year, Pederson joined the staff and received the same role on the offensive side.

After his time as a quality controls coach, Caldwell became an assistant linebackers coach in 2010. He held that role a year before removing the assistant tag and remained the Eagles’ linebackers coach until 2012.

When Reid was fired by the Eagles concluding the 2012 season, Caldwell joined the Arizona Cardinals staff where he coached under Bruce Arians and defensive coordinator, Todd Bowles. That led to Caldwell following Bowles to New York when he landed a head coaching job with the Jets and Caldwell held a role as the team’s assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach.

When the Jets fired Bowles after the 2018 season, Caldwell and Bowles reunited with Arians, but this time it was with the Tampa Bay Bucs where they have remained to this point.

In terms of their time on the same team as players, Caldwell and Pederson were on the Eagles’ 1999 roster together under Reid, which was his first season as an NFL head coach.

Caldwell will join the Jags after aiding Bowles and his group to having one of the most respected defenses in football. This past season the Bucs were third against the rush, allowing just 92.5 rushing yards a game.

Report: Press Taylor, Mike Caldwell expected to receive interest from Jags HC Doug Pederson

Doug Pederson was named the Jags’ coach Thursday night and now he’s identifying people who could join his staff like Mike Caldwell and Press Taylor.

The Jacksonville Jaguars finally named a new coach Thursday in former Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson after a process that concluded over a month removed from their first interview. With him now in place, though, there is still work to be done by Pederson, who now has to fill out his staff.

Thanks to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, we now know of two candidates who are getting looks from Pederson and those two coaches are Press Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts and Mike Caldwell of the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Taylor was almost a given to receive interest to join the Jags’ staff. He was an assistant under Pederson with the Eagles and held roles as an offensive quality control, assistant quarterbacks, quarterbacks, and passing game coach during that run. He’s now with the Jags’ divisional rivals in the Indianapolis Colts where he holds a senior offensive assistant role under Frank Reich, who was once Pederson’s offensive coordinator.

As pointed out by Garafolo, Caldwell knew Pederson dating back to his days as a player. They were a part of the 1999 Eagles roster under Andy Reid, though Pederson was a quarterback on the offensive side and Caldwell was a linebacker on the defensive side. The two also were on the same coaching staff under Reid with the Eagles from 2009-12.

Caldwell’s coaching career started in 2008 under Reid as he was a defensive quality control coach from then to 2009. He became an assistant linebackers coach for the Eagles in 2010 and a linebackers coach the two following seasons.

After that run with Reid, Caldwell joined Bruce Arians’ staff with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013, and also joined him in 2019 when he made the decision to join the Bucs and has remained there ever since. Between those runs with Arians, Caldwell also was an assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach with the New York Jets under another Arians disciple in Todd Bowles (2015-18).

With almost 15 years of coaching experience, Caldwell seems due to become a defensive coordinator and has learned from a variety of great minds. Just this past season, he helped aid the Bucs to a No. 3 ranking against the run and could help the Jags take another step towards cracking the top-15 after they were ranked 23rd in the category this past season.

Ravens reportedly interview two more candidates for open DC position

The Ravens reportedly interviewed two more candidates for their now-vacant defensive coordinator position

The Baltimore Ravens parted ways with now-former defensive coordinator Don Martindale after four seasons with the team in that capacity. While Martindale did some great things leading the Baltimore defense, both sides seemed to feel like changes were necessary.

The Ravens have been conducting the interview process with multiple different candidates, and on Wednesday it was reported that they interviewed two more in Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Joe Cullen as well as Tampa Bay Buccaneers inside linebackers coach Mike Caldwell.
