Ahead of the 2020 season, Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” to discuss how the Owls handled calling plays with Mack on staff.

Bloomgren came to Rice after serving as an offensive coordinator at Stanford.

“We had a system at Stanford where David Shaw and I called plays together and it worked incredibly well,” Bloomgren said. “What I have tried to do here, I have tried to be an asset to Jerry Mack, our offensive coordinator. He is a Memphis guy, an exceptional football coach. He has been an offensive coordinator at multiple places, he has been a head coach at North Carolina Central and he absolutely can handle it.

“I think at the end of the day, I say, I try and help them, but is more of the fact that I can’t step away, and that is the reality. I want to do more with the offensive line which is the group I grew up loving and working with probably the last 15 years of my career. I just love being around those guys.”
