Michigan vs Michigan State Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

Has the team finally figured it all out?

It’s been a rocky run do far without a whole lot of consistency scoring and way too many lapses on both ends of the floor, but the defense stepped it up over the last few games and the offense finally started making more shots from the outside.

Scoring in the interior isn’t an issue – 7-1 Hunter Dickinson and 6-11 Moussa Diabate are always easy inside presences to work with – but the threes are coming though.

Michigan State doesn’t force a whole lot of mistakes – neither does Michigan – and it’s not the type of team that’s going to bomb away from the outside too much. It’s more deliberate when it comes to finding its shot, and that plays into Michigan’s hands.

The Wolverines are great at guarding the three and better at coming up with the rebound off the misses. However …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan State is even better at guarding from three.

Again, the inside presence isn’t a problem for Michigan, but when the outside shooting struggles, nothing else seems to work.

It’s simple. Michigan is 10-1 when it hits 31% or better from three, and it’s 0-6 when it’s under the mark. Only seven teams have been better than 31% from the field, and the Spartans are 9-1 – the lone loss coming to Baylor – when keeping teams under 31%.

They’ll have no problems hanging on the boards, and again, Michigan is one of the few teams that has more issues forcing takeaways, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State has been a bit rocky lately thanks to power outages against Northwestern and Illinois. It hadn’t been able to prove itself against anyone who was all that great until hanging 86 on Wisconsin, and now it should be able to fight its way through the Wolverines.

To keep hammering this home, Michigan just won’t do enough from the outside to pull this off.

Michigan vs Michigan State Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

Welcome back, running game. You have a nice rest?

The Wolverines roared through the first three games against three solid teams – yes, Western Michigan, Washington, and Northern Illinois are at least decent – with 335 rushing yards or more against each.

There was a problem against Rutgers, and Derrick Henry would have an issue against the Wisconsin defense – maybe not; he ran for 147 yards and three scores against the Badgers in the 2015 opener – and then the O kicked back in against Nebraska and Northwestern to keep the unbeaten season going.

Yes, the Michigan State run defense has been good so far. Yes, the team has played great, the skill guys have been outstanding, and …

It’s all been done against a big bag of no big whoop.

Miami and WKU might go bowling, but it’ll be close. The Spartans have yet to beat a team with a winning record.

The Michigan O line is among the best in the nation at not allowing pressure into the backfield. That obviously helps the skill guys who aren’t turning the ball over, the defense is second in the nation in fewest points allowed behind Georgia, and now it all gets go against a Spartan team that doesn’t move the chains all that easily, doesn’t control the clock, and …

Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan, welcome to a pass rush.

While we’re schedule-shaming here, the Wolverine wins over Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, and shockingly, Washington, are hardly any reason to start building statues.

Beating Wisconsin at Wisconsin was nice, but that O is more than happy to give away three turnovers if you ask nicely.

To be fair, the offensive front held its own against the Badgers, but now it gets a Michigan State defensive line that’s been steady with three or more sacks in every game but the breather against Youngstown State.

On the other side, Michigan has yet to face anyone who can push the passing game – Western Michigan comes the closest – but Washington and Nebraska each pushed up against the 300-yard mark.

Michigan State is a big play team both with the passing attack and with Kenneth Walker on the ground, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Michigan defense is playing too well.

This is one of those it-comes-down-to-details games that former Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio’s teams were so good at when the program was rolling.

Current head man Mel Tucker is doing a fantastic job, but this team commits way too many penalties, has issues on third downs, doesn’t control the clock, and it’s last in the Big Ten in pass defense and first downs allowed.

Michigan might not be sensational, but it’s steady. It’s great on third downs, doesn’t turn the ball over, and it’s among the best in the nation in time of possession.

The Spartans will get up fast, but Michigan’s steady pounding will take over midway through the third quarter.

Why Michigan Will Win

It’s still Michigan State. Michigan is going to want to win this game no matter what.

There’s no need to care about this. The Wolverines are right there for a 1 seed in the big tournament no matter what happens in the Big Ten Tournament, but again …

It’s still Michigan State.

The Wolverines ripped through the Spartans a few days ago in a 69-50 win with the defense clamping down hard in the blowout. You scored as many threes on Michigan as MSU did – going 0-for-9 – but that’s nothing new. Michigan has held everyone to under 30% from three over the last four games and it should be able to do that again.

On the other side of the ball, MSU doesn’t have the ability go force enough mistakes to make up for the likely mediocre shooting.

Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan doesn’t need this.

Yeah, it’s a rivalry game, and yeah, it’s Michigan vs. Michigan State, but Michigan already did what it needed to do a few days ago. Good luck getting the Wolverines to ramp up the intensity for this, while Michigan State cane make this a resumé-maker no matter what.

What did the Spartans dod right in the blowout loss? It forced Michigan to turn it over 14 times – that’s good for the MSU defense – and it was strong on the boards.

What’s Going To Happen

This is the want-to game.

Does Michigan want to make a big statement going into the games that matter, or does it want to take it easy? Does Michigan State want to get its season going now with a win in the home finale to crank up the momentum?

It’ll be the latter, and it still won’t matter.

Michigan (18-2) vs Michigan State (14-10) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Michigan State Will Win

A totally lost season now has life. Can the Spartans keep playing like they have over the last five games – at least four of the last five?

They got rolled on the road at Maryland, but they managed to D up in strong wins over Indiana and Ohio State, and the 81-72 victory over Illinois looks special now.

What are they doing right? They’ve been strong at guarding the three – the Terps are the only team in the last six games to hit 30% or better from the outside – and they’re doing what they do on the boards.

Now, because of the latest run, they’re second in the Big Ten in three point defense and they’re among the league’s rebounding leaders.

Why Michigan Will Win

You don’t think Michigan will be a wee bit motivated after getting rocked by Illinois at home by 23?

The Wolverines couldn’t do anything against the Illini D, couldn’t to a thing on the boards, and got outplayed and outhustled to everything. Expect that to be an aberration. As bad as they were, they could still shoot – they just couldn’t seem to get any shots off.

The defense is much better than it showed. If it can play like the best field goal D team in the Big Ten and one of the best in the country again, all will be fine.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State has been great at home and struggled in a big way on the road going 2-7 in its last nine away from East Lansing.

Michigan’s rebounding issues against Illinois won’t disappear, but they won’t be as bad. The defense will take over early on, Michigan State will struggle from the field, and one good mid-first half run will wake up the Wolverines to be right back on track.

The big key for Michigan State in this game is Cassius Winston. He was instrumental in the Spartans sweeping the two regular-season games against the Wolverines and the Big Ten tournament title game last season. He averaged 21.3 points and 8.7 assists. He’s putting up those same kinds of numbers this season, with team-highs of 17.8 points and 6.1 assists per game.  Winston had 21 points and six assists Thursday night when Michigan State cruised to a 76-56 victory over Illinois. Xavier Tillman has also been a standout player to begin the season. Against Illinois, he had 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four blocked shots. The 6-foot-7 junior has 10 blocks in his last three games and is shooting 56.7 percent on the season.

Michigan (10-2, 1-1) had two easy wins against overmatched opponents in Presbyterian and UMass Lowell, combining to outscore them 172-104. Before that, the Wolverines faced four of five ranked opponents, splitting the games. The Wolverines cruised to an 86-60 victory over UMass Lowell on Sunday when Jon Teske scored a career-high 25 points on 11-for-14 shooting.

The 7-foot-1 Teske is averaging a team-high 14.4 points, while shooting 57.7 percent. He is one of four players scoring in double figures for Michigan, including Isaiah Livers (13.4), Eli Brooks (11.5) and Zavier Simpson (11.2).
