Could Michigan State football make a run at Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman?

Rico Beard of 97.1 suggested that MSU should make a run at Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman. It’s not that crazy of an idea. Here’s why:

While many, including us at Spartans Wire, have outlined some options for who MSU should pursue to be their next head coach, it was 97.1 The Ticket host, Spartans Illustrated contributor, and noted Michigan State media member Rico Beard who has taken the airways and social media by storm, suggesting that Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman should be the Spartans’ top choice as next head coach, as outlined by Fighting Irish Wire.

A new coaching search in East Lansing stems following a massive USA TODAY investigation, with Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller announcing to the public that the University plans to fire Mel Tucker for cause.

While on the surface, Beard’s comments felt a little outlandish, and even a bit of wishful thinking, but after digging into it, I’m here to tell Spartan Nation that I don’t think it is that crazy of an idea after all, and it actually could be very plausible.

You can find my reasoning below.

Brock Vradenburg went deep, leading the Spartans over Notre Dame in extras

Michigan State won a thriller in South Bend on Tuesday night, defeating the Fighting Irish 7-6 in 11 innings. The Spartans earned a huge program win, and grinded out a slugfest from start to finish.

Brock Vradenburg was the hero in the green and white, blasting a 422-foot home run with two outs in the top half of the 11th inning, giving the Spartans the eventual game winning run.

MSU hockey splits with Notre Dame, sets up pivotal game 3 on Sunday

MSU’s NCAA Tournament hopes will hinge on game 3 against Notre Dame:

The Big Ten hockey tournament is underway, and the stakes are very high for Michigan State. The Spartans are in a must-win position, having to win a best 2-out-of-3 series in the Big Ten quarterfinals on the road against Notre Dame to have any chance at making the NCAA Tournament.

In game one, despite the Spartans putting all the pressure in the world on the Fighting Irish, MSU fell 1-0. Down 1-0 in the series, MSU was in a win or go home situation for the rest of the weekend.

In game two, the Spartans went down 1-0 and doubt was starting to set in if the Spartans could score on the stifling Notre Dame defense. That changed quickly, MSU exploded for 4-straight goals en route to a 4-2 victory.

Now, the stage is set for game 3 between the Spartans and Fighting Irish, with MSU’s NCAA Tournament hopes on the line.

Game 3 will be played at 6 p.m. EST on Sunday, and we will be shown on FS2.

Michigan State basketball gets blitzed by Notre Dame, 70-52

MSU got blitzed by Notre Dame in the Big Ten/ACC challenge

The long gauntlet the Michigan State Spartans ran to open the 2022-23 is finally over, and you could tell by the performance the Spartans had on Wednesday night.

The Spartans showed up flat, tired and looked like a team that was battered and bruised, dropping their Big Ten/ACC Challenge contest to Notre Dame in South Bend, 70-52.

The Spartans got blitzed to open the game by Notre Dame 3-pointers, and it was a storm the Spartans couldn’t weather. Before you knew it MSU was down 31-13 in the first half and they could never recover.

Cormac Ryan torched MSU in the first half, scoring 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting, almost outpacing the Spartans, as the Fighting Irish led 42-24 at the break.

Michigan State made an attempt to comeback in the second half, taking a 24-point deficit and cutting it down to 14, but that is all they could do, and Notre Dame ran away with the contest.

AJ Hoggard led the way with 15 points for Michigan State while Joey Hauser and Tyson Walker added 12 a piece.

Michigan State will be back in action on Sunday when they open up Big Ten play against Northwestern.

Michigan State hockey weekend round-up: Spartans split with Notre Dame

Take a look at how Michigan State fared when they traveled to South Bend this weekend:

The Spartans traveled to South Bend for their first Big Ten Conference, and road series, of the season. Notre Dame came into the series as the No. 12 ranked team in the nation, while the Spartans received votes, but are not yet ranked in the polls.

In game one, Notre Dame showed why they are pushing a spot in the top ten, asserting their dominance early and often while cruising to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Spartans.

Michigan State wasn’t ready to leave South Bend without competing and they came out in game two ready to play. Jagger Joshua’s first period goal gave the Spartans the momentum they needed.

Notre Dame would counter in the second period, tying the game at 1-1, the score that the game would end regulation with behind Dylan St. Cyr’s 39 save performance.

After a scoreless overtime period, the two teams would face off in a shootout.

The Spartans would win the shootout, earning the extra point behind goals from Tanner Kelly and Karsen Dorwart.

RECAP:

Game One: Notre Dame 5, Michigan State 0.

Game Two: Michigan State 1, Notre Dame 1 (SO 2-1 MSU).
