Former Michigan State football QB addresses team before game at Minnesota

A familiar face came and spoke to the Spartan football team ahead of their game with Minnesota:

Coach Mark Dantonio had a familiar face speak to the team on Friday night ahead of the team’s game against Minnesota on Saturday. It’s no secret, the 2-5 Spartans are desperate for a win, the first of Harlan Barnett’s tenure as interim head coach.

In order to get that pregame morale boost, and a pregame motivational speech, the Spartans turned to former QB, current Minnesota Viking, Kirk Cousins.

Cousins spoke to the team, looking to get the team up and ready for their tilt in Minneapolis.

Michigan State hockey gets thumped by Minnesota

MSU drops game one against Minnesota, will look to get revenge on Saturday

No. 13 Michigan State is playing host the No. 4 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers for the top spot in the Big Ten at Munn Ice Arena this weekend.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, game one went the exact opposite of how they wanted it to. Minnesota thumped the Spartans en route to a 5-0 victory on Friday night.

Spartan goaltender Dylan St. Cyr stood on his head early, and did everything he could to keep his team in the game. St. Cyr made 11-of-12 saves in the first period and 10 saves on 11 shots in the second frame.

Michigan State trailed 2-0 heading into the third and weren’t able to do much more, surrendering three goals in the third to lose 5-0.

Michigan State will get a chance at revenge on Saturday, when they meet the Golden Gophers at Munn Ice Arena at 6pm.

Michigan State football suffers embarrassing loss at home against Minnesota

Minnesota embarrasses Michigan State inside of Spartan Stadium, 34-7

Another week has come and gone and it appears that Michigan State’s defense is only regressing. Michigan State played host to Minnesota on Saturday, and nothing went the Spartans way, losing to the Golden Gophers 34-7.

Tanner Morgan and the Gopher offense got what they wanted, early and often. Minnesota scored on their first three offensive drives, taking a commanding 17-0 lead early in the game.

Meanwhile, on the MSU side of the ball, the Spartans went 3-and-out on their first two possessions and followed it up with a Payton Thorne interception.

A Mohammed Ibrahim fumble gave Michigan State some life, but the offense punted just 5-plays later. The Spartans went into halftime down 17-0 and being outgained 307 to 45.

Michigan State started with the ball in the second half, with one last effort to score a touchdown, but a Payton Thorne fumble inside the ten yard line gave the ball back to Minnesota.

Michigan State would surrendor another touchdown and the Spartans were out of the little bit of life they showed in this game.

The Spartans fall to 2-2 on the season and will look to bounce back on the road against Maryland next Saturday at 3:30.

It has been a roller coaster ride so far this season for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Arguably playing its toughest stretch of the season, Minnesota will definitely be tested when No. 11 Michigan State comes to town on Sunday. The Gophers are coming off a 62-59 comeback win against Ohio State, while Michigan State lost 67-63 to Indiana in its last game. Against the Gophers at home on Jan. 9, the Spartans won 74-58.

Minnesota (11-8, 5-4) was down by nine points going into halftime vs. Buckeyes on Thursday but outscored OSU 34-22 in the second half to grab the win. It marked the team’s first win in Columbus since 2005. Marcus Carr led the team with 21 points and had seven rebounds. He was helped by the play of Daniel Oturu, who played closer to the basket that opened driving lanes for Carr. In the first game of the season vs. MSU, the Gophers were led by Oturo, who had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Alihan Demir and Carr also scored in double digits. Since that game, the Gophers have a 3-1 record in conference play.

The Spartans (14-5, 6-2) fell behind by 15 points in the opening 11 minutes at Indiana and could never come back, even though they had the chance to win late in Thursday’s loss. What kept the team close was the play of Cassius Winston, who had 13 of his 17 points in the second half. Michigan State rallied by making its first six 3-point attempts in the second half and took a 51-48 lead with 11:05 to go. It remained a one-possession game the rest of the way. In the first game against Minnesota, Winston led all scorers with 27 points and had six assists. The team also got great production from Xavier Tillman, who scored 19 points. MSU needs to play better in the opening minutes to win. If not, the team could fall to 1-3 over the last four games.
