Michigan State got a big time conference win on Saturday evening, defeating Maryland inside of the Breslin Center, 63-54. The win bolsters MSU’s record to 14-8 and further cements their place in the NCAA tournament.

MSU sweeps Maryland inside of the Breslin Center
Michigan State and Maryland locked up in a gritty matchup inside of the Breslin Center on Saturday evening. Both teams entered the contest at 13-8 and looking for a huge win to secure positioning in the NCAA tournament.
It was the Spartans who ultimately prevailed in the contest, defeating the Terrapins, 63-54, on their home floor.
The Spartans used a 12-0 run in the second half to pull away from Maryland, who took their only lead of the game, 42-41, late in the second half.
Tyson Walker and Malik Hall led the way for MSU, scoring 19 points a piece, while no other Spartan finished in double figures.
Michigan State will be back in action on Tuesday, on the road, against Minnesota.

Michigan State went into College Park on Sunday afternoon and came away with a big time Big Ten road victory over the Terrapins, 61-59.

Michigan State dropped their second straight game after losing to Maryland 31-9 at home on Saturday afternoon. While the score looked bad, the game was much closer than it appeared, but mistakes by the Spartans continued to cost the team.

Turnovers cost Michigan State against Maryland on Saturday afternoon:
Michigan State came into a game against Maryland reeling after a 41-7 loss to Washington and they didn’t help themselves as they looked to bounce back. The Spartans finished with five turnovers and eight dropped passes en route to a 31-9 loss to Maryland.
While the score looked bad, the game was much closer, with the Spartans shooting themselves in the foot time after time.
Michigan State opened the game with an interception, goal line fail and fumble to dig themselves a 21-0 deficit. Although down, MSU wasn’t out and continued to battle in the game, but mistakes kept coming up.
A drop by Montorie Foster in the endzone led to a missed field goal, while a Noah Kim overthrow also kept the Spartans from scoring.
Katin Houser took over for Noah Kim in the game, and led a very nice drive inside the Maryland 5-yard line, but an interception on a screen pass continued the woes for the Spartans.
MSU will look to bounce back next week when they travel to Iowa for a night game at Kinnick in Iowa City. The Spartans and Hawkeyes will face off at 7:30 EST on NBC.

MSU’s student section has made an impression on Maryland head coach Mike Locksley
Ahead of Saturday’s matchup between Michigan State and Maryland, Mike Locksley talked about the Spartans and what he expects out of the matchup. One thing that was on his mind, the Michigan State student section. Locksley noted how loud the student section is, and how they sometimes can be annoying.
The MSU student section (@MSU_FBStudents) has apparently made quite an impression on Maryland coach Mike Locksley. He brought them up multiple times during his presser today: “Their student section sits right behind your bench. They’re loud, they’re obnoxious at times…"

Maryland downs Michigan State, 27-13
Michigan State’s defense held up their end of the bargain, but Michigan State’s offense failed to show up in a road trip to College Park, Maryland. Maryland’s defense shutout the Michigan State offense in the second half, leading the Terrapins to a 27-13 victory.
The first half was a back and forth show between the Terrapins and Spartans, with both teams trading two touchdowns, but a missed extra point was the difference for MSU, who trailed 14-13 in the second quarter.
A two-minute drill score for Mayland gave the Terrapins a 21-13 halftime lead.
Michigan State missed two field goals and one extra point in the first half, putting the Spartans way behind in this contest.
The second half was an offensive disaster.
MSU’s defense only gave up two field goals in the second half and the offense was given the ball with the opportunity to make it a football game five times.
The first four times resulted in three-and-outs for the Spartans, while the fifth was a turnover on downs inside the Maryland redzone.
Michigan State will look to bounce back against Ohio State at Spartan Stadium next Saturday.
