Michigan State at Illinois odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Michigan State at Illinois odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Michigan State Spartans (12-4, 4-1 Big Ten) and Illinois Fighting Illini (11-5, 2-3) are lined up for a Friday night battle in Champaign. The opening tip at the State Farm Center will be at 9 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan State vs. Illinois odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Michigan State is 7-0 straight up (SU) and 6-1 against the spread (ATS) since Dec. 7. With a capable offense (75.5 points per game) and a good defense (70.2 PPG), the Spartans have leveraged a dip in their schedule. Friday’s game marks MSU’s 1st against a KenPom top-40 foe since Dec. 7.

In their last 4 games, the Illini are 3-1 SU and ATS. Also solid at both ends of the floor (76.9 PPG on offense, 63.8 PPG allowed), Illinois has been a lockdown 5 on its home floor. The Illini are 8-1 at home and have held teams under a 40% effective field-goal rate in 5 of those games.

Michigan State at Illinois picks and predictions

Prediction

Illinois 70, Michigan State 67

Moneyline

Fast-paced Illinois likes to launch a lot of 3s. MSU has a strong — and getting better of late — perimeter defense. The Illini have a rebounding edge, but they also have a turnover problem, and iffy turnover rates were part of the equations in both recent losses (Dec. 22 vs. Missouri and Jan. 4 at Northwestern). Both those foes live in the same neighborhood as Michigan State in analytic measures like KenPom and BartTorvik.

There is solid value in the SPARTANS (+220). They may not be a predicted win, but their chances are better than the 31.25% odds implied by this price.

Against the spread

The Spartans are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games against winning teams. The Fighting Illini are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games against foes playing .600 basketball or better.

MSU plays a slow-down style but is highly efficient on offense. Past Illinois opponents that fit as comparable are Virginia (Nov. 20) and Penn State (Dec. 10). Illinois lost those 2 games SU and by a combined 36.5 points ATS.

Consider a mix of sides backing the Spartans on the ML and — with MICHIGAN STATE +6.5 (-110) — here against the number.

Michigan State at Illinois odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Michigan State at Illinois odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Michigan State Spartans (3-5, 1-4 Big 10) limp into Champaign to take on the No. 13 Illinois Fighting Illini (7-1, 4-1) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan State vs. Illinois odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Michigan State comes into this game after a miserable effort on and off the field last week at No. 4 Michigan. After a 29-7 loss — as a 21-point underdog — to their rivals on the field, several MSU players roughed up Michigan players in a stadium tunnel.

Due to the incident, Spartans coach Mel Tucker suspended 8 players indefinitely. They include 3 defensive starters, one being senior LB/DE Jacoby Windmon, who leads the country with 6 forced fumbles and a team-high 5.5 sacks among his 49 tackles.

With RB Chase Brown (1,208 rushing yards) leading the Illini’s ground attack, Windmon will be sorely missed.

For Illinois, it is all about the run game and defense. Brown has run for at least 129 yards on 25 carries in each of the past 4 games. While only scoring 8 TDS (5 rushing, 3 receiving) this season, these points account for almost 23% of the 208 total points scored by Illinois.

The defense’s 8.9 points per game allowed ranks No. 1 in the nation, ahead of Georgia (10.5 PPG allowed). The defense has only given up 71 points, including 62 in in 5 Big Ten games for an average of 12.4 per contest. The defense will look to dominate again this week against Michigan State, which has only managed 81 points in 5 conference games (16.2 PPG).

Michigan State at Illinois picks and predictions

Prediction

Illinois 24, Michigan State 7

Moneyline

AVOID.

Illinois (-1100) will prevail, but it’s not wise to risk 11 times your potential profit.

Against the spread

LEAN ILLINOIS -16.5 (-115).

It’s only a lean because, while Illinois has only given up 62 points in conference, it has only scored 115 in those games for a 23.0 PPG average. The Illini win with defense and running the ball. So, I cannot see this game getting to out of hand. The question is: Will Michigan State even score?

Over/Under

BET UNDER 40.5 (-108).

As mentioned, Illinois allows only 12.4 points per Big Ten game, while MSU averages 16.2 PPG in conference. The Illini will shut down the Spartans and any points scored here will be by Illinois … which will not be many.

UNDER 40.5 (-108) is my FAVORITE PLAY in the game.

Michigan State at Illinois odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Michigan State at Illinois odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 10 Michigan State Spartans (15-3, 6-1 Big Ten) face the No. 21 Illinois Fighting Illini (13-5, 6-2) Tuesday with a 7 p.m. ET tip-off at State Farm Center in Champaign, Ill. Below, we look at the Michigan State vs. Illinois odds and lines and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Michigan State stumbled Jan. 15 against Northwestern but bounced back with an 86-74 triumph at then-No. 8 Wisconsin Friday. The Spartans went 6-for-12 from distance and got to the line 28 times in what figures as their biggest road win of the season.

F Malik Hall led a strong MSU bench effort that resulted in 43 points. Hall had 14 points and 8 rebounds as Michigan State won for the 10th time in its last 11 games.

Illinois is coming off losing twice last week when it was bested 96-88 in double-overtime at then-No. 4 Purdue Jan. 17 and then they misfired in an 81-65 game at Maryland Friday. The Big Ten’s third-leading team in scoring with 79.3 points per game shot a mere 40.4% over the two games.

Michigan State at Illinois odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Illinois 74, Michigan State 71

Money line

Junior C Kofi Cockburn is averaging 21.1 points and 11.8 rebounds per game but is dealing with a concussion and is listed as questionable for Tuesday. He played 22 minutes in the loss to Purdue and then did not play versus Maryland.

Cockburn’s presence at both ends of the floor is quite impactful. Even assuming he does play, don’t count on Illinois dosing out minutes in normal quantities: he’s just too important for what the Illini want to accomplish down the road.

Three-point shooting has fueled recent successes for the MSU offense. Peg that offense as being up for keeping this game within two scores and giving UI a near-35% chance to win.

Consider a partial-unit play value play on the SPARTANS (+200).

Against the spread

The Spartans are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games against teams with a winning home record while the Fighting Illini are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games against foes with a road mark of greater than .600.

TAKE MICHIGAN STATE +5.5 (-110).

Over/Under

A mid-140s contest looks to be on target: PASS.
