Ashton McCulloch’s run in the US Amateur ends in the Round of 16

Michigan State golfer Ashton McCulloch has had a successful summer, qualifying to play in both the RBC Canadian Open and the US Open as an amateur on the PGA Tour. McCulloch looked to add to his list of accolades at the U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota.

Unfortunately, the Canadian was dropped in the Round of 16, going 23 holes in match play, before a tragic exit.

Big things are ahead for McCulloch in both the green and white and his professional future.

With golf at the Olympics taking place this week, and the FedEx playoffs set to begin, the PGA Tour season is coming to a close. Michigan State alum Ryan Brehm, a one-time PGA Tour winner, enjoyed another season competing on golf’s biggest stage.

In 2024, Brehm played in 20 events, finishing in the top ten once and two top 25 finishes, making over $500,000 in earnings.

Spartan Ashton McCulloch competes at 124th U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2:

Ashton McCulloch, an upcoming senior with MSU, made his way through to qualify for the 124th edition of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

While things were looking promising for a while, a late falter resulted in McCulloch missing the cut.

Spartan Ashton McCulloch is eyeing the cut at the U.S. Open

Michigan State rising senior Ashton McCulloch has gotten the honor of playing at the US Open in 2024 after qualifying in his home country of Canada.

In round one, with tough conditions at Pinehurst No. 2, McCulloch shot a 75 (+5). While on surface, it doesn’t feel like a good round, McCulloch is firmly in the mix to make the cut, which will fall around the +3 or +4 marker.

He is set to tee off at 2:42 p.m. EST.

A Spartan golfer has qualified for the U.S. Open

In the golf world, Monday was known to the sport as, “the longest day in golf.” The moniker referred to the qualification process for the United States Open. With qualifiers happening all over the world, golfers both experienced and amateur were looking for their entry into the US Open.

One Spartan, Ashton McCulloch, fresh off of an appearance at the RBC-Canadian Open and his junior season at MSU, has qualified for the US Open.

McCulloch fired a -8 day to finish in seventh place, securing his spot at the major.

The U.S. Open will take place at Pinehurst No. 2 from June 13-16.

Former Spartan Ryan Brehm has made the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic

Many in the Detroit area are aware and actively paying attention to the Rocket Mortgage Classic, a PGA Tour event being hosted at the Detroit Country Club in Detroit, Michigan. As the tournament goes on, Spartan fans should be paying attention to Ryan Brehm, an MSU alum who is on the PGA Tour.

Brehm shot a -2 (70) on Thursday and followed it up with a -3 (69) on Friday, allowing him to make the cut at the event.

Brehm is a one time winner on the PGA Tour, winning the 2022 Puerto Rico Open.

Michigan State women’s golf wins regional championship, first in program history

The Spartans have won the regional championship, move on to the NCAA championships!

History was made within Spartan athletics this weekend when the Michigan State women’s golf team won their first NCAA regional championship in program history.

The Spartans took first place in the Palm Beach regional behind a first place finish from sophomore Brooke Biermann. The team will move on to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

James Piot found himself in red figures in the first round of the US Open on Thursday

Michigan State has some representation in the 2022 United States Open Championship in the form of James Piot. Piot is the reigning United States Amateur Champion and is coming off of his senior season in East Lansing and is looking to make an impact on the professional scene. Piot will get his chance after shooting in red numbers on Thursday at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

En route to his one-under 69 in round one, Piot finished with three birdies and two bogies.

He will have a solid chance to stay in contention, as well as making the cut, during the second round on Friday.

James Piot’s tee time and group announced for 2022 Masters Tournament

James Piot is in a star-studded group at the Masters. Check out when the Spartan golf star will be teeing it up at Augusta National:

Michigan State’s own James Piot won the 2021 United States Amateur Championship. One of the perks that came along with winning the U.S. Amateur is getting an exemption into the Masters Tournament. Piot is looking to place well in the tournament amongst the game’s best players but is also looking to receive the highest honors an amateur can receive at the Masters by scoring the best amongst the amateurs.

Piot’s tee time has been announced for the Thursday round at the Masters. Piot will be teeing off at 10:45 a.m. in group 15 alongside defending champion Hideki Matsuyama and the world’s No. 7 player Justin Thomas.
