The Athletic leaves Spartans off preseason bowl projections

The Athletic does not have Michigan State bowling in 2024.

Scott Dochterman and Stewart Mandel of The Athletic released their preseason bowl projections this week, and they don’t have the Spartans in a bowl game this year. This has become a common prediction as The Action Network and ESPN also left the Spartans out of their preseason bowl projections.

Michigan State is coming off a 4-8 season and has missed out on reaching a bowl game in each of the last two seasons. New head coach Jonathan Smith is looking to right the ship, though, and get the Spartans back in the postseason this year.

Brad Crawford of 247Sports has the Spartans returning to the postseason this year.

Crawford released an updated batch of bowl projections this week, and he has Michigan State slated to reach a bowl game. Crawford has the Spartans facing Kansas in the Armed Forces Bowl in his updated projection.

Spartans return to Action Network’s updated bowl projections

Brett McMurphy of the Action Network has the Spartans bowling in his updated projections following week two action

Brett McMurphy of the Action Network has the Spartans bowling in his updated projections following Week 2 action.

The future is uncertain for the Michigan State football program with head coach Mel Tucker suspended indefinitely after sexual harassment allegations came to light this weekend. However, on the field, Michigan State has a good start this fall with a 2-0 record.

That good start has bumped the Spartans back into McMurphy’s updated bowl projections. McMurphy put Michigan State in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. He has Michigan State squaring off with Kansas in that projected matchup.

There’s a chance Michigan State football could be playing back-to-back games at Ford Field this year.

The Spartans will end the 2023 regular season in a neutral site matchup against Penn State on Black Friday at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. That matchup is already set, and according to Big Game Boomer the Spartans could be heading back to Ford Field for the Quick Lane Bowl this holiday season.

Big Game Boomer released updated bowl projections that listed Michigan State playing against Ball State in the Quick Lane Bowl. This wouldn’t be the flashiest bowl slot for the Spartans but any postseason game would be a step in the right direction after missing a bowl game last fall.

Could Michigan State be heading back to a New Year’s Six bowl game this year? That’s how John Whitaker (a.k.a. Big Game Boomer) see’s it going down.

Whitaker — known by many as Big Game Boomer on Twitter — released a batch of bowl projections for the upcoming 2022 season and he is apparently very high on the Spartans. Or at least higher on Michigan State than College Football News, who also recently released bowl projections.

Whitaker has the Spartans as one of three Big Ten teams making a New Year’s Six game this upcoming season. But which bowl game in particular does he have Michigan State playing in?

Michigan State moves up to New Year’s Day bowl game in latest projections from Brett McMurphy

Michigan State could be celebrating New Year’s in a big-time bowl game

Michigan State could be celebrating New Year’s in a big-time bowl game.

The Spartans are continuing to win and continuing to climb up the Big Ten bowl game pecking order in many projections. That includes Brett McMurphy’s latest batch of bowl projections released on Monday.

McMurphy has moved the Spartans up to the Outback Bowl against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Michigan State would be a 0.5-point underdog in this matchup.

Entering the season I would have been thrilled with any bowl game for the Spartans so the fact that they could make a New Year’s Day bowl game is pretty incredible. With a win this week against Rutgers, the Spartans will officially be bowl eligible so a bowl berth could be wrapped up as soon as this week.

USA TODAY: No bowl game for Spartans in 2021

Another preseason bowl predictions list has Michigan State missing out on the bowl season this year

Add Erick Smith of USA TODAY to the list of national media that is not high on the 2021 Michigan State Spartans.

Smith released his first batch of bowl predictions for the upcoming season, and like many he evidently isn’t buying much stock in Michigan State. Smith left the Spartans off his bowl predictions last week list — joining Brett McMurphy who also put out bowl predictions that didn’t have the Spartans bowling.

Here’s Smith’s breakdown of the Big Ten teams in bowl games this year:

  • Orange Bowl (CFP Semifinal): Ohio State vs. Alabama
  • Rose Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Oregon
  • Outback Bowl: Iowa vs. Florida
  • Citrus Bowl: Penn State vs. LSU
  • Music City Bowl: Michigan vs. Ole Miss
  • Las Vegas Bowl: Indiana vs. Arizona State
  • Pinstripe Bowl: Northwestern vs. Virginia
  • Guaranteed Rate Bowl: Nebraska vs. West Virginia
  • Quick Lane Bowl: Purdue vs. Toledo
  • Redbox Bowl: Minnesota vs. Cal

Click here to read the complete bowl predictions from Smith of USA TODAY.

I don’t blame Smith for aligning with so many others in the national media, but I personally believe Michigan State will reach a bowl game this year. So it’ll be interesting to monitor Smith’s weekly updates on his bowl predictions throughout the season should the Spartans live up to my expectations of reaching a bowl game this holiday season.
