Michigan State football is staying close to home in the latest bowl projections from Action Network

Should the Spartans beat Rutgers on Saturday, it appears Michigan State football is destined for the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit.

Brett McMurphy of the Action Network released an updated batch of bowl projections on Monday, and he has Michigan State landing in the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit. He is projecting the Spartans to face Buffalo in the bowl.

The GameAbove Sports Bowl has been a popular destination for the Spartans in projections this week (and, really, most weeks for the last month). CBS Sports also has Michigan State landing in that bowl game.

The Spartans are 5-6 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play. Michigan State snapped a three-game losing streak this past weekend with a win over Purdue. The Spartans will need to beat Rutgers on Saturday in order to reach bowl eligibility.

Michigan State hosts Rutgers in the regular season finale on Saturday. Kickoff time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on Fox Sports 1.

Detroit-based bowl reportedly ‘preferred destination’ if MSU reaches bowl eligibility

It seems clear where Michigan State football will be bowling this year should they beat Rutgers this week

If Michigan State football beats Rutgers this week to reach bowl eligibility, there’s reportedly a strong chance they’ll remain close to home this holiday season.

Braw Crawford of 247Sports’ released his weekly bowl projections on Sunday morning, and stated the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit is the “preferred destination” for Michigan State should they reach bowl eligibility. The exact quote from Crawford can be found below:

“Sources told 247Sports that Detroit is the preferred destination for the Spartans if they hit the magic number.”

The quote from Crawford doesn’t clarify if the Detroit-based bowl game is preferred by the Spartans, Big Ten or GameAbove Sports Bowl reps. It certainly would make sense for the Spartans to land in a game close to home in an effort to draw a big crowd.

Crawford currently has Michigan State facing Buffalo of the Mid-American Conference in his latest projections. Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has the Spartans facing Miami (OH) in the same bowl game in his last projections.

Michigan State is 5-6 overall on the year and must beat Rutgers in the season finale on Saturday to reach bowl eligibility. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. on Saturday.

Analyst likes Spartans’ chances of reaching bowl game despite recent slide

Things have been rough for the Spartans the past two weeks, but that doesn’t mean they’re out of bowl contention

Things have been rough for the Spartans the past two weeks, but that doesn’t mean they’re out of bowl contention.

Spartans Illustrated writer and analytics guru Paul Fanson is still giving Michigan State solid odds of reaching the postseason for the first time in three years. Fanson took to social media platform X on Sunday morning to note that Michigan State still has a 71 percent chance of reaching a bowl game based on his analytics model.

Michigan State is on a bye next week, but from there they have the remaining three games on their schedule:

  • November 16: at Illinois
  • November 22: vs. Purdue
  • November 30: vs. Rutgers

With a 4-5 overall record, Michigan State will need to win two of the final three games to reach bowl eligibility. All three of those games will be considered winnable but don’t be surprised if it comes down to the final game of the season for Michigan State to clinch a bowl berth.
