MSU basketball experiences significant drop in update AP Poll

Michigan State basketball experienced a significant drop in the newly released Associated Press (AP) top 25 rankings

Michigan State basketball experienced a significant drop in the newly released Associated Press (AP) top 25 rankings.

The updated poll was released on Monday, with the Spartans sliding from No. 4 to No. 18. The significant drop for the Spartans should come as no surprise after losing their season-opener to James Madison — who checks in at No. 24 in this week’s poll.

Purdue (No. 2) and Illinois (No. 23) were the only other Big Ten teams ranked this week.

Michigan State’s next matchup is against No. 9 Duke on Tuesday night. The Blue Devils dropped from No. 2 to No. 9 after losing to Arizona last week.

For the first time since late November, Michigan State basketball is not listed in the Associated Press (AP) top 25 poll.

After dropping both games last week, Michigan State dropped outside the top 25 in Monday’s updated poll. The Spartans landed just outside the rankings as the No. 26 team in votes with 58 points — which was one point behind Iowa at No. 25.

Michigan State continues to climb up the AP Top 25, with the Spartans moving up another spot in this week’s poll.

Michigan State is now No. 11 in the updated AP Poll that came out on Monday. The Spartans started the season unranked but have gradually climbed up the rankings to what is now their newest high point on the season.

The Spartans are the second-highest ranked Big Ten team this week, only behind Purdue — who sits at No. 3. Ohio State (No. 14) and Wisconsin (No. 24) are the only other ranked Big Ten teams.

Michigan State returns to the floor on Tuesday in a neutral-site matchup against Oakland. Tipoff from the Little Ceasars Arena in Detroit, Mich. is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.
