Ravens officially release three players, place RB J.K. Dobbins on injured reserve

The Ravens officially made four roster moves, including placing RB J.K. Dobbins on injured reserve

The Baltimore Ravens have slowly but surely been trimming their roster to 53 players ahead of the cutdown day deadline. The team is going to have to part ways with some very good football players, much like they’ve already done over the past few weeks.

After Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reported that Baltimore was moving on from three wide receivers, the Ravens officially confirmed two of those moves, while also announcing the termination of a vested veteran offensive lineman as well as placing running back J.K. Dobbins on injured reserve with a season-ending knee injury that he suffered in Baltimore’s final preseason game of 2021.

Schofield was signed in June for offensive line depth. He can play both inside and outside, but got most of his time at tackle for the Ravens.

Gray was also signed in June, and acted as a return specialist for the team. Mariner was signed in August for wide receiver depth as multiple players at the position went down with injuries in a short amount of time.

Dobbins suffered a torn ACL in Baltimore’s final preseason game of 2021. The injury ends his season, and being placed on injured reserve was the final step in that process. He will now look to 2022 as his breakout year after an unfortunate string of events.

The Ravens will need to trim their roster to 53 players by Tuesday, August 31st at 4pm EST.

John Harbaugh gives his thoughts on Ravens’ revamped offensive line so far

The Baltimore Ravens have revamped their offensive line in a big way for the 2021 season. John Harbaugh gave his thoughts on the unit so far

The Baltimore Ravens went through a bit of an overhaul to their offensive line in the 2021 offseason. They signed guards Kevin Zeitler and Michael Schofield as well as tackles Alejandro Villanueva and Ja’Wuan James while also bringing in guard Ben Cleveland in the draft.

When asked about how he feels about his new offensive line unit so far, head coach John Harbaugh said that he was ‘very pleased’ with them.

“Right, same thing. Getting those guys that are new, so getting them merged into the offense is a big part of it, and then also watching them play has been a pleasure. They’re all ball, all the time – both of those guys. Whether it’s meeting room, weight room, conditioning [or] on the field work – they’re all ball, all the time. I love that about them. I think they’re going to be a formidable tandem on the right side. I’m really pleased with them so far.”

Many predict that Baltimore’s offensive line from left to right will be Ronnie Stanley, Ben Cleveland, Bradley Bozeman, Kevin Zeitler, and Alejandro Villanueva. If that is indeed the group that starts in Week 1, it would mean a different player would be playing at each position compared to how the line looked in the final game of 2020, with Bradley Bozeman being the only constant, although he was playing left guard, not center.

The Ravens struggled with injuries and some poor play on their line last season. With the talent and depth that they’ve added in 2021, it seems that Baltimore isn’t planning on being thin at the position this year, and Harbaugh is happy with what he’s seen out of his offensive line so far.

John Harbaugh provides injury update on Ronnie Stanley

The Baltimore Ravens lost left tackle Ronnie Stanley midway through the 2020 season. John Harbaugh provided an injury update on the tackle

The Baltimore Ravens had to deal with plenty of injuries across their offensive line during the 2020 season. However, none of the losses they sustained were as big as left tackle Ronnie Stanley, who suffered a gruesome leg injury in Baltimore’s Week 8 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers that knocked him out for the remainder of the season.

When asked about Stanley’s progression as the 2021 season quickly approaches, head coach John Harbaugh offered an encouraging update, saying that the left tackle is “on schedule”.

Stanley will be a welcome addition back to an offensive line that has undergone plenty of changes during the 2021 offseason. The team has added guards Kevin Zeitler, Ben Cleveland and Michael Schofield, brought in tackles Alejandro Villanueva and Ja’Wuan James, and moved on from Orlando Brown Jr., Matt Skura, and D.J. Fluker. It also appears that Bradley Bozeman is moving to center as he returns to the position he played throughout college.

Hopefully a full bill of health is in store for Stanley this year. The sixth-year tackle has never played a full season in his NFL career, so if he’s able to play a full 17 games this year he’ll provide a big boost for a new-look offensive line unit that will be tasked with opening up lanes in the running game as well as protecting star quarterback Lamar Jackson. Based off of Harbaugh’s comments, it seems like Stanley will be back on the field in time to get in football shape and make an impact.

John Harbaugh comments on addition of Michael Schofield

The Baltimore Ravens added offensive lineman Michael Schofield to their team last week. John Harbaugh commented on the addition

The Baltimore Ravens added plenty of depth to their offensive line room last week. After signing tackle Ja’Wuan James, the team announced just one day later that they had also agreed to terms with veteran offensive lineman Michael Schofield.

When asked about Schofield and what he brings to the team, head coach John Harbaugh gushed about the six-year veteran.

“It’s great. [He’s] another Michigan man, too. So, [Ben] Bredeson and I were enjoying that out there today. So, it’s great to have him on board, but [he’s] just another veteran lineman who really knows how to play. He understands the game. He has a physicality to him. [He’s a] Big Ten-type of offensive lineman – you appreciate the mindset and the style. We’ll just see where it goes from here, but I do like the fact that we’re bringing in guys that kind of embrace our style of play up front and are very smart and experienced players.”

After experiencing a plethora of injuries across their line in 2020, Baltimore is going to extra lengths to make sure that they have enough depth at the position to make it through the 2021 season without having to shuffle through endless combinations of different players. This year, the Ravens have added plenty of quality offensive linemen that can step in if needed and produce at a high level.

Schofield will be competing with players like Ben Bredeson, Ben Powers, and Trystan Colon for roster spots. With how many offensive linemen Baltimore has added over the past few months, it seems like one or two good players at the position will have to get traded or released when final cut down day arrives.

Winners and losers from the Panthers’ 20-13 win over Washington

Here are our winners and losers from Sunday’s game.

Playing spoiler to Ron Rivera and the Washington Football Team’s division-clinching hopes, the Carolina Panthers earned a decisive 20-13 victory in the nation’s capitol today.

Here are our winners and losers from Sunday’s game.

Winner: WR/RB Curtis Samuel

Samuel is having a career year for Carolina. Today, the versatile receiver got it done through the air and on the ground, totaling 158 yards from scrimmage and leading the team in rushing and receiving yards. Both were career highs for Samuel, who will either sign an extension with the Panthers or hit free agency this offseason. Unfortunately for Carolina, the latter is looking increasingly likely with each impressive performance.

Loser: Panthers’ draft position

The Jaguars may have clinched the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, but the Panthers’ draft position had the potential to swing multiple places in the Top-10 depending on how their final two games finished. With the win in D.C., Carolina will temporarily slide down to the ninth pick in the draft, which if it holds all but solidifies the team missing out on a top QB prospect.

Winner: Carolina secondary

The Panthers’ defense picked up right where they left off last week against Green Bay, but the effort was notably easier as they faced the mistake-prone Dwayne Haskins most of the game. Overall, the Carolina secondary took advantage of favorable matchups to force the second-year quarterback into a final stat line of 154 yards, two interceptions and a fumble before he was benched for Taylor Heinicke. Tahir Whitehead and Tre Boston both had picks, while Donte Jackson forced an end-zone incompletion in one of Washington’s last-ditch efforts.

Loser: QB Teddy Bridgewater

Bridgewater’s poor performance was largely overlooked thanks to an even worse outing by Haskins, but it’s worth mentioning, nonetheless. The Panthers won today thanks to an impressive defensive and special teams effort, not an offensive one. Bridgewater finished the game with a lower quarterback rating than Taylor Heinicke, posting 197 yards on 19 completions while throwing for a touchdown and one interception.

Winner: DT Derrick Brown

Th defensive line has been a major source of hope as of late, and a large reason for that success has been the emergence of first-round draft pick Derrick Brown. Brown deflected two passes at the line of scrimmage and got to the quarterback once, helping to set up the Panthers’ defensive line to finish the game with three sacks and four tackles for a loss.

Loser: OT/G Michael Schofield

Filling in for Trent Scott, Michael Schofield was no match for rookie defensive end Chase Young. The Panthers offensive line allowed Young the opportunity to all-but-solidify his Defensive Rookie of the Year bid, as the No. 2 overall pick ended the game with four tackles, a sack, a pass deflection and a quarterback hit. Montez Sweat also chipped in, adding a key fourth-quarter sack on Bridgewater after easily getting past Schofield.

Winner: Fumble recoveries

As the offense stalled on first-quarter drives, the punt coverage team scored the first touchdown of the day after Washington muffed Joseph Charlton’s kick. Trenton Cannon made a textbook tackle to knee the football into the end zone, then Zylstra fell on it to put six on the scoreboard and score his first NFL touchdown. The Panthers also had a defensive fumble recovery forced by Marquis Haynes, Sr. and recovered by Jermaine Carter Jr.

Loser: K Joey Slye

Slye did not attempt a single field goal today, and that was not because the Panthers never got in range. After missing an extra point attempt in the first quarter, Matt Rhule and Joe Brady consistently tried to convert fourth downs rather than kick mid-to-long-range field goals. If the Panthers’ staff has lost trust in their kicker, it’s only a matter of time before a new one is brought in.

Panthers activate 2 offensive linemen from reserve/COVID-19 list

The Carolina Panthers have activated center Tyler Larsen and guard Michael Schofield from their COVID-19/reserve list.

The Carolina Panthers have activated center Tyler Larsen and guard Michael Schofield from their COVID-19/reserve list. Larsen and Schofield had spent the last several weeks on it, sharing that space with cornerback Rasul Douglas, who was activated on Monday.

This is obviously great news for the players and their health. It also helps the team out in a critical area: depth in the trenches. Both sides of the line of scrimmage have been hit hard by injuries and the pandemic this season.

Larsen has played 60 games in his career and started 18. He’s the primary backup behind starting center Matt Paradis.

This is Schofield’s first year with the Panthers after spending the last few seasons with offensive line coach Pat Meyer and left tackle Russell Okung on the Chargers.

Schofield started the first two games of the year but was replaced at left guard by Chris Reed, who also has spent time on the COVID list. Him and Dennis Daley are now the backup guards behind Reed and John Miller.

Panthers put 2 more players on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Carolina Panthers have placed two more players on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Panthers have placed two more players on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list. They just announced that kicker Joey Slye and offensive tackle Trent Scott are joining the list, which already has guard Michael Schofield and center Tyler Larsen on it.

According to Joe Person at the Athletic, neither player has tested positive for the virus. However, they were in close contact with players who have.

Scott is one of the team’s two backups for starting left tackle Russell Okung, so their depth at that spot takes a hit. Slye being out is obviously more problematic, as Carolina doesn’t have another kicker currently on the roster.

However, the Panthers have already brought in a few potential replacements for visits, hosting three free agent kickers this week.

Panthers place G Michael Schofield on COVID-19/reserve list

Panthers place G Michael Schofield on COVID-19/reserve list.

The first month of the 2020 NFL season was relatively clean when it came to avoiding positive COVID-19 tests. The last few weeks have been a different story, with multiple teams getting multiple positive tests and several games having to be postponed.

The Carolina Panthers have also been touched by the virus. According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, guard Michael Schofield has been placed on the COVID-19/reserve list.

Schofield joins backup center Tyler Larsen on the list.

Today and Tuesday the team is working remotely due to a positive test. It’s unclear if it was Schofield’s test that was responsible for the change in the team’s schedule.

Playing games in a bubble is still a great idea to make sure the NFL can finish this season, but as of yet there doesn’t seem to be any plans for one despite the recent increase in cases among players across the league.

Matt Rhule says Panthers have Dennis Daley starting at left guard

Panthers coach Matt Rhule says Dennis Daley has been starting at left guard.

Like the rest of the roster, the Panthers offensive line went through some earth-shaking changes this offseason. Trai Turner was traded to the Chargers for Russell Okung, temporarily filling a long-standing hole at left tackle but opening up another one at right guard. The team also lost Greg Van Roten to the Jets in free agency, punching another hole on the other side of center Matt Paradis.

The Panthers have since added a couple of guards this offseason who could fill those spots. Somebody who was already around for last season is currently in the driver’s seat at left guard, though. After today’s practice coach Matt Rhule told the media that 2019 sixth-round draft pick Dennis Daley has been starting at that position.

Don’t give him the starting job just yet, though. Coach Rhule also said that both Michael Schofield and Chris Reed could compete for that spot.

Daley played left tackle during his time at South Carolina. Since he turned pro he’s been trying his hand at several spots, though.

Last year at this time, Ron Rivera’s staff had him training to play everywhere but center. That versatility will be useful as Daley tries to earn more snaps under Rhule and new offensive line coach Pat Meyer.

As for the other side, it sounds like John Miller may be the favorite to start at right guard in place of Trai Turner.

One advantage Miller has over the other candidates is his experience with Teddy Bridgewater. They played together at Louisville.
