Michael ‘Venom’ Page vows to rebuild in first statement after UFC 303 loss to Ian Machado Garry

Michael Page does not appear to be deterred by his UFC 303 loss against Ian Machado Garry.

[autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] does not appear to be deterred by his UFC 303 loss against Ian Machado Garry.

Former Bellator contender Page (22-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) suffered his first octagon defeat this past weekend in the form of a unanimous decision to Garry (15-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It was a big moment for “Venom” after winning his promotional debut against Kevin Holland in March, but he could not get over the hurdle.

MVP has remained in silence since his defeat to Garry on Saturday, but on Thursday he finally shared insights on social media, and were positive in tone (via Instagram):

When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal. #ufc303

After nearly being submitted by Garry’s rear-naked choke in the opening round of the welterweight bout at UFC 303, Page rallied to take the second round. The third frame came down to the wire, but ultimately the judges scored it in Garry’s favor.

In the aftermath of the event, UFC CEO Dana White stated that he scored Page vs. Garry as a draw.

It’s unknown at this time when Page, 37, will return to competition.

Dana White unsurprised by Ian Machado Garry vs. Michael Page lacking action, scored UFC 303 fight a draw

Dana White didn’t think Ian Machado Garry vs. Michael Page was worthy of a winner.

LAS VEGAS – UFC CEO [autotag]Dana White[/autotag] didn’t think [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] was worthy of a winner.

Garry (15-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) defeated Page (22-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) by unanimous decision in Saturday’s UFC 303 main card opener at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It wasn’t the strikers’ delight that fans anticipated, with a large portion of the fight taking place on the ground. White thinks the fight should have been ruled a draw.

“Sean (Shelby) and Mick (Maynard) felt that that fight would play out exactly the way it did,” White told reporters at the UFC 303 post-fight press conference. “We talked about it leading up to this fight. I had that fight a draw. If they came out and said that fight was a draw, that was exactly what I thought that fight was, too.”

White broke down the rounds, pointing to Round 3 as the tough one to score. Page abandoned the top position that he had on Garry, which ultimately cost him. When Page stood Garry back up, Garry grabbed a hold of him and took his back to ride out the rest of the round in back control.

“Obviously Ian won the first round, MVP won the second round, and it was 50-50 in the third round,” White continued. “What was crazy was MVP had that top position and he gave it up. He could have just rode that thing out and won the round. He stood up and gave up that top position.”

Spinning Back Clique REPLAY: Alex Pereira stops Jiri Prochazka at UFC 303, Diego Lopes’ future, NAC rulings, more

On “Spinning Back Clique,” our panel discusses Alex Pereira’s win over Jiri Prochazka at UFC 303, what’s next for Diego Lopes, NAC rulings, and more.

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly live show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.

This week’s panel of Brian “Goze” Garcia, Mike Bohn and Farah Hannoun will join host “Gorgeous” George Garcia live at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) to discuss and debate the following topics:

  • [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] has logged in his second title defense at light heavyweight, stopping violently [autotag]Jiri Prochazka[/autotag] in a rematch that headlined UFC 303. This was not only a huge result for Pereira, but also for MMA in general, given the magnitude of Pereira’s achievement. Where does “Poatan” rank among the greatest fighters in history? Should UFC grant him a move to heavyweight? What’s next for him at light heavyweight? We discuss.
  • UFC 303 was also host of many other important results. In the co-main event, [autotag]Diego Lopes[/autotag] defeated [autotag]Dan Ige[/autotag] in a fight that was made during the event as [autotag]Brian Ortega[/autotag], Lopes’ original opponent, pulled out due to illness. Also, [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] remained undefeated after beating [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] in a very close fight, among other results. We make sense of the main UFC 303 outcomes.
  • It was an interesting week for the Nevada Athletic Commission. Most notably, they were responsible for sanctioning and greenlighting the Lopes vs. Ige fight hours before the bout itself in an unprecedented move. They also issued their sanctions on [autotag]Arman Tsarukyan[/autotag], who swung at a fan during his UFC 300 walkout, and [autotag]Igor Severino[/autotag], who was cut from the UFC after biting his opponent. What do we make of these calls? Was the right decision made? We discuss.
  • Lastly, UFC 303 and the NAC rulings weren’t the only things that happened last week. There were also many other interesting developments in the sport. Each panelist highlights a story that caught their attention from this past week.

UFC 303 results: Ian Machado Garry grapples his way to decision over Michael Page

Ian Machado Garry avoided Michael Page’s tricky striking to get a win behind a sticky grappling game in the UFC 303 pay-per-view opener.

[autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] tempted fate on the feet just long enough to get to his ground game to grind out a victory over [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag].

Garry (15-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) knew his best path to victory would be with grappling, and that’s exactly the gameplan he implemented to score a unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) win over Page in the UFC 303 main card opener at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

After referee Mark Smith signaled for the fight to begin, chants of “MVP” roared through the crowd as Page shuffled over to Garry in his side stance.

Both offered a few single strikes, but neither found the mark. However, Garry had the first significant moment, getting a takedown from a caught kick.

Garry worked his way to Page’s back and locked in a body triangle. A second later, an arm was under the neck, and the rear-naked choke was locked in. Page escaped the choke, but had to deal with Garry’s punches from the back until the horn.

Page stung Garry with a right hand early in Round 2. Darting in and out, Page connected with another combination while evading Garry’s strikes. A moment later, Page swung and missed, leaving an opening for Garry to quickly latch on for a clinch. Garry then dropped down for a leg lock, but couldn’t secure it.

Back on the feet, Page connected with a fast two-punch combo. After missing with a flying knee, Page blasted with another combo just before the horn.

With five minutes remaining, Page continued to hunt for strikes on the feet. An awkward clash led to the fight going to the ground with Page on top. Garry was able to sneak in a few solid elbows from his back while working with a body triangle.

Midway through the round, the fight returned to standing position, but didn’t stay there long as Garry got a takedown and quickly scrambled to the back. Page stood with Garry riding his back along the fence, and the crowd grew restless as the final seconds ticked away.

During his post-fight interview, Garry said he thought his best path to a finish was working on the ground, rather than trying to trade with Page on the feet. He also made his title intentions clear while speaking with Joe Rogan.

“I’m coming for that world title, 15-0,” Garry said. “Undefeated. Unstoppable. I don’t care who’s next, where it is. I’m going to be a world champion. The future is inevitable and I’m coming for that belt.

With the result, Garry picked up his second win of 2024 and kept his undefeated record intact. In February at UFC 298, Garry won a split decision over Geoff Neal. Now 8-0 in the UFC, Garry firmly places his name in the welterweight title picture.

Ian Machado Garry vs. Michael Page prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC 303

There’s quite a bit of hype surrounding the UFC 303 pay-per-view opener between Ian Machado Garry and Michael Page, but will it deliver?

[autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] and [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC 303 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 3-2
UFC main cards, 2024: 52-49-2

Ian Machado Garry vs. Michael Page UFC 303 preview

Garry vs. Page is being described as a “pivotal” fight in the UFC welterweight division, which it most certainly is, but will it be exciting? That remains to be seen, but the matchup of ranked 170 pounders has its share of doubters. … Garry will step into the cage still undefeated after beating Geoff Neal this past February, but it was anything but a statement victory as it lacked action and failed to meet the big Conor McGregor-style of trash talk Garry delivers. … Page, a former Bellator title challenger, got his UFC tenure off to a solid start with a one-sided unanimous decision win over Kevin Holland, but even that performance left fans wanting more.

Ian Machado Garry vs. Michael Page UFC 303 expert pick, prediction

Despite having a perfect main-card opener like Cub Swanson vs. Andre Fili booked for this very same event, the UFC matchmakers continue to sully Joe Silva’s memory and his surefire method of kicking off main cards with lightweight or featherweight fights.

Although this welterweight selection between Garry and Page is undeniably an intriguing and important contest, I’m not sure it will deliver the action that some are expecting.

I hope I’m wrong given that I’m a fan of both fighters, I just suspect the length parity – coupled with Page’s countering sensibilities – gives us all the makings for a high-level staring contest.

Garry gets a lot of hate for his persona, but I believe he’s a talented fighter who has a decently high ceiling in this division. And though I don’t disagree with Garry being favored in this spot, I have a sneaky suspicion that Page could be a stylistic nightmare considering the lack of counter strikers we’ve seen him face.

For that reason, I’ll take a flier on MVP to snake-charm both Garry and the cageside judges en route to a decision win.

The oddsmakers and the public are siding with the younger party, listing Garry (-162) and Page (+126) via FanDuel.

Stephen Thompson: Ian Machado Garry not ‘on the same level’ of striking as Michael Page

Stephen Thompson doesn’t think Ian Machado Garry can stand with Michael Page for the entirety of their UFC 303 fight.

[autotag]Stephen Thompson[/autotag] doesn’t think [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] can stand with [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] for the entirety of their UFC 303 fight.

Page (22-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) meets Garry (14-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC 303 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main card opener at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Many wanted to see Page fight Thompson next after he defeated Kevin Holland in his promotional debut at UFC 299, but MVP dismissed it as a potentially boring matchup due to their similar striking styles.

Thompson agreed with Page’s analogy. He gives him the advantage over Garry in the striking department.

“Both of these guys are at the highest level, especially when it comes to the striking game,” Thompson said on his YouTube channel. “Now, is it smart for Ian Garry to go out there and just strike with MVP? I don’t think so.

“Even though Ian Garry is a great striker, I don’t think he’s on the same level as Michael ‘Venom’ Page, especially when it comes to the distance management, the blitzing, the speed period. I think Michael ‘Venom’ Page is really, really fast, he’s very accurate, and very versatile. But I think Ian Garry is a very intelligent fighter.”

Thompson advises Garry to utilize his grappling if he wants to find success against Page.

“If I was him, I would be mixing it up,” Thompson said. “Not just striking, but obviously working my grappling, trying to lay and hang on this guy against the fence if I can, looking for my takedowns if it’s there, just to try and somehow fatigue this guy.”

Ultimately, Thompson picks Page to beat Garry. Although he thinks it’ll be hard, “Wonderboy” thinks Page can knock him out.

“I’m definitely leaning towards my man Michael ‘Venom’ Page,” Thompson said. “It’s going to be exciting. I do think if MVP touches Ian Garry on that chin, I think he’s going to be able to put him out.”
