Is Micah Welch playing today? Injury update for Colorado running back

Colorado running back Micah Welch is dealing with a hamstring injury. Here is the latest update:

Micah Welch has been a positive contributor to Colorado football’s offense so far this season, but the true freshman running back is currently dealing with a hamstring injury.

Through eight games, Welch owns 121 yards on 24 carries (5.0 yards per rush) and three touchdowns. He was first used prominently in Colorado’s Week 3 win over rival Colorado State.

Welch didn’t see any carries against Kansas State in Week 7 and took only one last week at Arizona.

Kickoff between Colorado and Cincinnati is set for 8:15 p.m. MT on ESPN.

Micah Welch injury update

According to Scott Procter of The Coloradoan, Welch isn’t in uniform for the Buffs’ Week 9 game against Cincinnati.

How long will Micah Welch be out?

It’s unclear how long Welch will miss, but the injury doesn’t appear serious. Colorado has a bye next week, meaning Welch could be positioned to return in Week 11 against Texas Tech.

Colorado depth chart at running back

Head coach Deion Sanders told the media earlier this week that he expects Isaiah Augustave to start at running back for the second straight game. Last week, the Arkansas transfer rushed for 53 yards and one touchdown.

Behind Augustave, Dallan Hayden should be next in line to receive carries. Charlie Offerdahl, who produced a team-high 56 rushing yards against Arizona, is also available.

Coach Prime hints at change in Colorado’s running back room

Coach Prime hinted at a potential change in Colorado’s running back room

As the Colorado Buffaloes look to rebound this Saturday against Arizona, CU head coach Deion Sanders closed his weekly presser on Tuesday with an announcement on who will likely be starting at running back: sophomore Isaiah Augustave.

“(No.) 23 may get the nod this week,” Sanders said, referring to Augustave’s jersey number. “Everyone else has started but him, so he may be that back this week that gets the opportunity to do his thing.”

A transfer this past offseason from Arkansas, Augustave leads the Buffs with 127 rushing yards on 27 carries. He has appeared in every game but the opener against North Dakota State and scored his first touchdown of the season against Kansas State.

Sanders was originally inquired about the status of freshman tailback Micah Welch, who didn’t register a carry against Kansas State.

“You gotta understand he had a hamstring injury now,”  Sanders explained. “He didn’t practice every day last week, so you kind of bring him back slowly.”

Freshman Micah Welch recaps productive showing in Colorado’s Week 3 win

Micah Welch made the most out of his first college carries

Led by true freshman Micah Welch, Colorado football’s run game finally showed signs of life during Saturday’s win over Colorado State.

Welch, a former three-star prospect, made the most out of his first college carries, finishing the Buffs’ 28-9 victory with a team-high 65 rushing yards. The Georgia native received nine rushes on the evening, including a first-quarter tote of 25 yards.

“It was a great boost,” Welch said of his lengthy rush at Canvas Stadium. “I knew it was gonna happen. I seen how the defense was lined up and I took advantage of it.”

Following the run, Welch shared a moment with Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, who offered his encouragement.

“He (Coach Prime) said he knew I could do it,” Welch said. “He said I was a great back and I could do it.”

Welch later came up with another big run of 16 yards during Colorado’s second scoring drive of the first half.

Deion Sanders asked about Micah Welch’s playing time ahead of Nebraska matchup

Deion Sanders offered some insight on true freshman RB Micah Welch’s lack of snaps

Colorado football retooled its running back room this offseason, though the youth of the position created some mysteries heading into the season. After accounting for only 14 carries in the season-opening win over North Dakota State, the question marks remain.

A few things became clear, including sophomore Dallan Hayden and junior Charlie Offerdahl being the top backs after playing a combined 58 snaps and receiving most of the carries. However, the absence of true freshman Micah Welch stood out.

When asked if Welch would play in Week 2 against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, CU head coach Deion Sanders said that playing time between his RBs is up to the game’s situations. He said his “youngsters” need to protect quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the passing game.

Coach Prime was still complimentary about Welch and the rest of his running backs:

“We know Micah can run his butt off,” Sanders said. “He’s physical, he’s abrasive, he’s abusive, he is unbelievable with the ball in his hands and we hope that we could get that. But, we have several backs that can do that, man, and we’re hoping we can run the ball a lot more successfully.”

Perhaps, Coach Prime used the moment to challenge Welch. Or maybe he wanted to give props to his talented RB room.

But if anything is certain, Welch will earn snaps by proving he can protect his quarterback.

Colorado freshman RB Micah Welch working toward NFL dream

Incoming freshman Micah Welch has his sights set on the NFL

Incoming freshman Micah Welch has done nothing but impress since arriving on Colorado’s campus earlier this year. The young running back flashed his impressive athletic abilities during spring practices and now appears primed for a big rookie season in Boulder.

While his college career is only beginning, Welch recently shared that making the NFL remains a driving force in his daily pursuits. In a recent video posted by Colorado football’s X account, the freshman gave a great response when asked a simple yet potentially deep question: What makes you work?

“To change my family’s life, change my life and get to the NFL,” Welch said. “That has always been a dream of mine, so I’m going to make that happen. You’re going to see one day, I’m telling you.”

Fortunately for Welch, projected first-round picks Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter should attract plenty of NFL scouts to Boulder this fall. Can the Georgia native make a strong first impression?

Running back Micah Welch looking strong in first spring camp at Colorado

Micah Welch isn’t playing like an early enrollee this spring

As we wrote when he signed in December, don’t underestimate the abilities of new Colorado football running back Micah Welch.

The former three-star prospect out of Georgia joined the Buffs this semester as an early enrollee and is playing well during his first college spring camp. Multiple videos have emerged of Welch showing off his speed before delivering a punishing hit to a Colorado defender. It’s still only April, but Welch has consistently shown an ability to gain extra yards after contact, something that CU’s backs lacked at times last season.

Check out these runs from Welch at a recent practice, courtesy of Well Off Media:

Welch, who’s listed at 5-foot-9 and 205 pounds, received some praise from Thee Pregame Show host Uncle Neely following that same practice.

“He’s (Welch) out there against the No. 1 defense, and he wasn’t holding back and they weren’t holding back,” Colorado insider Uncle Neely told Jake Schwanitz of DNVR Buffs.

Fans will get their first in-person look at Welch during Colorado’s Black and Gold Weekend spring game on April 27.

Don’t sleep on new Colorado RB signee Micah Welch

Don’t sleep on Micah Welch

The Colorado Buffaloes’ 2024 high school signing class for the early signing period was a bit scarce. But, some talented players have committed to play for the Buffs.

And, despite all of the speculation and rumors, five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton finally signed his national letter of intent with Colorado.

Perhaps the biggest sleeper of the class is Micah Welch, a running back from Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, Georgia.

Welch has a ton of talent and could be a huge piece of Colorado’s future along with Dylan Edwards.

Here’s what Brad Crawford of 247Sports wrote about Welch:

One of the more underrated ballcarriers this cycle, Micah Welch was the Georgia Region 4-AAAA Offensive Player of the Year as a junior two years ago with 1,373 yards rushing (6.1 average) and 16 touchdowns. Colorado went portal-heavy at the position last cycle and now adds a potential diamond-in-the-rough freshman to its backfield room for 2024.

Of course, Edwards is still in Boulder, but Anthony Hankerson left for Oregon State and Colorado’s RBs room needed a fresh face.

Multiple CU Buffs commits add to their highlight reels on Friday

Several #cubuffs commits looked quite impressive on Friday night

The 2023 season kicked off for many high school football teams across the country on Friday night and a handful of Colorado commits enjoyed big performances.

Those who were in action on Friday included quarterback Danny O’Neil, running backs Micah Welch and Jamarice Wilder, wide receiver Winston Watkins Jr., defensive end Eric Brantley and offensive lineman Talan Chandler, whose Nevada Tigers (Missouri) were scrimmaging.

Minus Chandler and Brantley, each of those Buffs commits recorded at least one touchdown. Colorado’s future is looking bright with this crop of talent, to say the least.

Check out a few of the best highlights from 2024 and 2025 CU football commits on Friday:

CU Buffs continue recruiting tear with commitment from Georgia RB Micah Welch

Georgia prospect Micah Welch is committed to Colorado’s 2024 class

Yet another recruit who was visiting Boulder over the weekend has committed to Colorado.

On the heels of Florida wide receiver Zycarl Lewis and Michigan defensive lineman Brandon Davis-Swain joining the herd, Georgia running back Micah Welch became the third 2024 prospect in the span of three days to announce his Colorado commitment.

Listed at a stout 5-foot-9, 210 pounds, Welch rushed for nearly 1,400 yards last season for Baldwin High School and was named the Georgia Region 4-AAAA Offensive Player of the Year. The three-star prospect also owns offers from Tennessee, Oregon, Ole Miss, Florida and a few other Power Five schools.

Following Welch’s pledge on Monday morning, head coach Deion Sanders now has eight 2024 commits.
