Miami vs North Carolina Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The offense continues to be amazing.

The Tar Heels lead the ACC averaging 507 yards per game with a high-powered offense, Drake Maye is one of the nation’s best young quarterbacks, and it should work against a Miami defense that failed miserably the last time out.

The Hurricane pass defense gave up a slew of passing yards early in the season, and Middle Tennessee took things up a few notches with a 408-yard passing performance in a 45-31 Blue Raider win.

That’s fine – defenses struggle from time to time – but the offense didn’t do its part to keep up pace. As good as Tyler Van Dyke is, the downfield passing game isn’t there, Texas A&M and Middle Tennessee allowed the Canes to complete just 51% of their passes, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Miami Will Win

Okay, enough stalling.

The North Carolina defense. It’s not good.

Only two teams in the ACC are allowing more than 400 yards per game. Georgia Tech is giving up 412 yards per outing, and then there’s North Carolina.

It’s giving up 451 yards per game.

It’s able to get away with it because the offense is to strong, but it’s not like the D was getting ripped apart by Georgia and USC.

Notre Dame’s offense did a whole lot of nothing before going off on the Tar Heels. Appalachian State rolled for 649 yards – and haven’t come within 200 yards of that against another FBS team since – and Georgia State had a whole lot of fun.

Virginia Tech’s miserable offense came up with 273 yards, and that still didn’t help move the needle on UNC’s defensive stats.

Miami has had two weeks to sit and stew on the loss to Middle Tennessee. The offense should be ready to go.

What’s Going To Happen

Miami will start with the basics. It’ll get the offensive line going, grind it out a bit, and then let Van Dyke and the passing attack start to work.

It’s not a plus to get into a shootout with the Tar Heels – they’re better equipped for a high-scoring fun fest – and every third down stop will mean the world. The UNC offense is amazing, but it doesn’t do a thing to control the clock. On the flip side, Miami is happy to keep it slow and steady.

The points will be there for both sides, but Miami – who’ll have the ball for almost 40 minutes – will get it done with one big late defensive stop to go along with the balanced offensive attack.

Miami vs North Carolina Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

So what’s going right?

Star QB D’Eriq King is done after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery, the season just can’t get going without two wins in a row, and it’s going to take something special to turn everything around.

However, the Canes still have plenty of time to make some noise, and this week they get a team that’s as flaky as it gets.

North Carolina has the talent and the offensive pop, but it’s having a disastrous job trying to control games, and it’s not getting the consistent rushing production that made last year so special.

For all of Miami’s problems, new starting QB Tyler Van Dyke fought and battled against Virginia, putting the team in a position to win late, only to lose on a missed kick.

The team is still battling, the defensive line should get to the Tar Heel running backs – the Tar Heels aren’t doing anything to protect Sam Howell – and the game might not get out of hand, but …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Tar Heels have the ability to turn the lights out if everything works right away.

The offensive line is going to struggle in pass protection against this Hurricane D, but it should be able to do just enough to make the running game work. It hasn’t taken much so far – Miami is 0-3 when allowing more than 130 rushing yards, and 3-0 when it doesn’t.

North Carolina has rushed for over 130 yards in every game but the loss to Georgia Tech.

The Tar Heels are playing one of the few teams that’s worse than they are at controlling the clock, the Turnover Chain D only has four takeaways, and penalties have been an issue.

With Van Dyke under center, Miami might need to be perfect to pull this off, and it won’t be.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much do you buy into patterns?

That’s the belief that form sometimes hold with teams that play one way, adjust, and go on. For example, both teams are coming into this after going win-loss-win-loss over the last four games.

Something has to give, but the problem is North Carolina …

Good luck trying to figure out what kind of a performance this team will bring.

It might be as simple as turnovers. The Tar Heels didn’t come up with any in the losses to Georgia Tech and Florida State, and they came up with four in the wins over Virginia and Duke. Miami hasn’t turned it over in its last two games, but it will in Chapel Hill.

Why North Carolina Will Win

Miami might have a gaudy record and a slew of fun playmakers including an elite quarterback, but they haven’t had to deal with a whole lot of high-end offenses.

The Canes gave up 550 yards to Clemson, over 500 to Louisville, and over 400 to NC State. They won two of them, but now they have to deal with the most balanced and dangerous attack outside of Clemson’s.

Sam Howell threw for 550 yards and six touchdowns in the win over Wake Forest, the running game rolled for over 300 yards three times and averages 218 yards per game, and now Miami’s D has to deal with all of it.

On the other side – to be fair, partly because of QB D’Eriq King running around making plays – Miami allows the most tackles for loss of anyone in the ACC. North Carolina’s defense isn’t amazing, but if it can just do enough to hold serve once in a while, the offense will do the rest.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Miami Will Win

D’Eriq King is just that good.

He might not be putting up the massive numbers he did when he was rolling at Houston a few years ago, but he’s hitting 64% of his passes, has started bombing away more and making more deep shots, and he has thrown 20 touchdown passes with just four picks – all four coming in two games.

He doesn’t do enough running, but when he had to against NC State, he pulled out the win.

North Carolina might have the high-powered offense, the balance, and the veteran playmakers, but if King is the best player on the field, that’s enough to carry the Canes.

For all of the good things North Carolina does, it doesn’t make a ton of plays behind the line. It generates sacks, but not a whole lot of tackles for loss.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

There’s still a battle with Georgia Tech to deal with for Miami, and this is it for North Carolina.

There’s no way the Tar Heels can be the third-best team in the ACC standings without a win and two straight Canes losses, but the highest-ranked available team in the ACC standings goes to the Orange Bowl. If Notre Dame and Clemson both get to the College Football Playoff, and No. 17 North Carolina beats No. 10 Miami convincingly, it could be the Tar Heels who get the big bowl.

King will be magnificent, the two teams will go back-and-forth in a wild shootout, and the Canes will end up pulling it out at home with a late drive after blowing a late second half lead.
