Prediction

Mets 8, Nationals 5

Money line (ML)

The Nationals’ (+115) victory over the Mets Saturday eliminated New York from playoff contention. Look for the METS (-129) to at least close out the season with a win for the following reasons.

First, New York has an edge in the starting pitching matchup and has better bullpen numbers. Second, New York’s lineup is more reliable—first in batting average and OPS, 11th in runs scored per game and home runs hit—mainly because of the Nationals’ injury report. Third, the Mets are 12-5 in the last 17 meetings and that’s dating back to last year’s World Series Nationals team.

New to sports betting? You’d have to risk $129 on a Mets ticket for a $100 payout if they win.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Nationals +1.5 (-143) have the best run line record as a home underdog (12-3 RL). Also, the Mets -1.5 (+120) are sub-.500 on the run line overall, in division games and as an away favorite.

Plus, the first three Mets-Nationals games in this series have been decided by a total four runs, including two one-run games. PASS ON THE RUN LINE.

Over/Under (O/U)

I lean OVER 8.5 (-110) because these NL East games have been slugfests in 2020. The Nationals have the highest Over percentage in division games (63.9%) and the next two clubs are also NL East teams (Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins).

The Mets have a 19-18-1 Over/Under record in NL East games. Additionally, the Over is 11-5-1 in the last 17 meetings, and four of the last Mets-Nationals games have gone Over the total.

Prediction

Mets 3, Nationals 0

Money line (ML)

It’s a shame the Nationals (+130) are eliminated from playoff contention because this should be an epic pitchers duel. deGrom is right smack in the middle of his prime and starting to rise the all-time rankings. Scherzer was one of the best pitchers of the 2010s, and a future Hall of Famer, but is having a down year.

It’s an expensive-ish price but deGrom is the best in the biz right now and I refuse to overthink this. BET METS (-143) since they are still alive in the NL postseason race. New to sports betting? A $143 bet on the Mets (-143) pays a $100 profit if New York beats Washington.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

I’ll splash on METS -1.5 (+135) for a small play because Scherzer has pitched worse in his home park compared to the road and the Mets’ lineup is legit whereas the Nationals +1.5 (-167) are banged up.

Truthfully, I’d put a 1/4th unit on the run line here say $25 to win $33.75 if New York beats Washington by two or more runs. Aside from Friday’s 3-2 win, the Mets have beaten the Nationals by a combined 13 runs in there other three victories.

Over/Under (O/U)

This will be a narrow runway to land but I’d TAKE UNDER 5 (-121). The market is hammering the Under hence the more expensive price point. They’re two superstars pitchers and their competitiveness alone should keep this tight. This is a rare case when a sports fan will root for an Under.

The New York Mets (26-31) are in the nation’s capital to play the Washington Nationals (23-34) in the second game of a four-game series at National Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Mets-Nationals MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Season series: New York leads 4-3.

Playoff picture:  The Mets are three games back of the San Francisco Giants for the 8th and final seed in the NL postseason with three games to play. The Nationals are eliminated from postseason contention.

Mets at Nationals: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Rick Porcello vs. RHP Max Scherzer

Porcello: 1-6 with a 5.46 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 8.2 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 56 IP over 11 starts.

  • Last start (Sept. 20): Loss, 7-0, with 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 10 K and 2 BB versus the Atlanta Braves.

Prediction

Nationals 5, Mets 2

Money line (ML)

The Mets (+125) have beaten Washington in three consecutive meetings, including a 3-2 win Thursday. The Nationals’ (-139) last victory over New York was a 2-1 win in Scherzer’s last start against the Mets (Aug. 11).

The Nationals might be out of it but they still have a former Cy Young winner and future Hall of Famer on the mound looking to end 2020 on a good note.

Porcello looked great in his last start despite holding an L and even had a good outing in his two other 2020 starts against Washington. Everyone is down on the Nationals, and rightfully so, because of cluster injuries and them not being able to replicate their 2019 championship form.

That’s why we are getting such a pro-Washington number here. TAKE NATIONALS (-139) on the money line.

New to sports betting? A $139 bet on the Nationals (-139) earns a $100 profit if Washington beats New York.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Nationals -1.5 (+140) have significantly underperformed compared to expectations as evident in their 3-11 run line record as a home favorite. The Mets +1.5 (-167) are 8-6 on the run line as a road underdog and have covered the RL in five of their seven games against the Nationals this season.

Washington’s lineup is above average in several categories but its injury report has me PASSING ON THE RUN LINE.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 8.5 (-110) is the total bet to make. Again Porcello has pitched great in both of his starts against Washington and I am not wasting any more words talking up Scherzer, his resume speaks for itself.

I would be pounding the table and yelling “Under” if the Nationals didn’t have the highest Over percentage in division games in the league. That, plus the Over being 10-4-1 in the last 15 Mets-Nationals games has ballooned the total higher than it should be.

New York Mets at Washington Nationals odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s New York Mets at Washington Nationals sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Mets (25-31) are still clinging to slim playoff hopes and will kick off a series against the Washington Nationals (23-33) on Thursday. The first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. ET at Nationals Park. Below, we analyze the Mets-Nationals MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Mets at Nationals: Projected starting pitchers

LHP David Peterson vs. LHP Patrick Corbin

Peterson was dominant in his most recent start, with 10 strikeouts and just one earned run allowed in six innings vs Atlanta. Through nine appearances (eight starts), he owns a 3.80 ERA, but an uninspiring 36:23 K:BB in 42 2/3 innings.

  • He allowed just one hit over five scoreless innings in a previous start against the Nationals. It will be tough to duplicate the feat, though, as the Washington offense ranks third in wRC+ vs LHP with the lowest K% against them.
  • Peterson has appeared in five games on the road this season and has posted a 3.65 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings (6.2 K/9).

Corbin got roughed up in his last start when he allowed seven earned runs on 14 hits in six innings vs Miami. He has failed to live up to expectations this season, putting up a 4.76 ERA through 10 starts.

  • This is the second straight year in which he has been much better at home than on the road. In five starts at Nationals Park, Corbin has a 3.16 ERA and a 36:5 K:BB in 31 1/3 innings.
  • His fastball velocity is down almost two ticks from 2019, and he’s getting far fewer whiffs on his slider than he did the past two seasons. As a result, his K% is down to 21.8%, after he struck out 29.6% of opposing batters the past two seasons.

Prediction

Nationals 6, Mets 4

Money line (ML)

  • Mets (-106)
  • Nationals (-106)

Peterson was great in his last start, but his overall skills to date tell a different story. Even with the Washington offense missing a couple of key pieces, they should have success this time around against the young lefty, though it would certainly help if Turner returns to the lineup.

Corbin hasn’t been as dominant as usual this season, but he’s been good at home again and is still pretty clearly the superior starter in this matchup. Look for the NATIONALS (-106) to come out on top.

New to sports betting? A $10.60 bet on the Nationals ML will profit $10 if they beat the Mets straight up.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

  • Mets -1.5 (+140)
  • Nationals +1.5 (-167)

Both pitchers have had a few excellent outings mixed in with a few clunkers. A case could be made for either team at -1.5 being a good value, but the preference here is the NATIONALS -1.5 (+170) or -2.5 (+260).

Over/Under (O/U)

  • Over 9 (-110)
  • Under 9 (-110)

Neither pitcher has displayed skills that are all that strong, and both of these offenses have fared well all season against left-handed pitching. Both teams should put some runs on the board Thursday evening, so OVER 9 (-110) looks like the play.
