John Cena reportedly asked Nintendo to make a new 2D Metroid game

Former WWE champion John Cena is a huge fan of the Metroid franchise.

John Cena, former WWE champion, is allegedly a huge fan of the Metroid franchise and asked Nintendo for a new 2D Metroid game in 2017.

As spotted by VGC, Giant Bomb’s Dan Ryckert, who formerly worked for World Wrestling Entertainment, claimed on Twitter that the wrestler turned actor repeatedly asked Nintendo reps for a new game in the Metroid franchise at a 2017 photo shoot promoting the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch.

Ryckert wrote “During this photo shoot in 2017, Cena repeatedly told the Nintendo reps how much he wanted a new 2D Metroid.” Cena’s wish came true in 2021 when Nintendo released Metroid Dread, a game which was previously canceled sometime in the late 2000s.

The tweet goes on to say that “When Metroid Dread came out years later, he was sent a copy. Cena’s people sent an email back saying ‘John loves it.’” Cena wasn’t the only fan of the game as Metroid Dread quickly became the franchise’s best-selling title.

Krysta Yang, a former employee of Nintendo of America, who was present at the photoshoot, confirmed the story. In her own tweet, which shows a picture of herself with Cena, Yang wrote, “He did say how much of a Metroid fan he was. He’s a really nice guy!”

The photoshoot was part of a campaign to promote the hybrid console in the run-up to its launch, depicting people playing the Switch in unlikely locations. Another Metroid title came out later that year, Metroid: Samus Returns, on the 3DS and received mostly good reviews. This release is a remake of the 1991 GameBoy title Metroid II: Return Of Samus.

After this game received a positive reception, the team, including producer Yoshio Sakamoto, returned to the development of Metroid Dread, now being created for Nintendo’s latest console rather than the Nintendo DS for which it was originally developed.

A fourth game in the Metroid Prime series was also announced in 2017. However, footage is yet to be seen, and the game has since changed development studios.

Metroid Dread is now the series’ best-selling entry

The grand return of Samus brought in big sales for Nintendo.

Samus isn’t the most recognizable Nintendo mascot, but her latest adventure is still selling like there’s no tomorrow.

On Tuesday, Nintendo released its latest financial report. As you might expect, the Switch and Pokemon are massive success stories. What’s somewhat surprising, though, is Metroid Dread has sold 2.9 million copies as of March 2022 — making it the highest-selling series entry! Metroid Prime, the prior record-holder, sold 2.84 million units back in 2002.

The original Metroid is now the third-highest selling installment, selling 2.73 million units in the 1980s. So yeah, while Metroid Dread isn’t seeing Elden Ring or Lego Star Wars numbers, this is a massive milestone.

Nintendo is still supporting Metroid Dread too, as the boss rush mode update came out not long ago. For free, no less!

Sadly, while Nintendo’s report mentioned Metroid Prime 4, there was no release window information whatsoever. Retro Studios teased some artwork earlier this year, but that’s about it. As recently as January, the company was hiring key roles for Metroid Prime 4, so it’ll probably be ages before we see this one in motion.

If nothing else, Metroid Dread cruising past this milestone proves people love the series. Despite what many diehards will tell you.

Metroid Dread receives boss rush mode in a free update

Fight the most challenging enemies without replaying entire levels.

Last year, Metroid Dead took everyone by surprise with its exciting white-knuckle boss fights, and now you can revisit them at any time.

On Thursday, Nintendo released the Boss Rush mode for Metroid Dread. Aspiring space bounty hunters can now take on the universe’s most challenging beasties in a tense gauntlet of one-after-the-other fights. While missile supplies restock between battles, Samus will carry any damage taken into the subsequent brawl. So don’t take any hits!

Much like previous updates for Metroid Dread, the Boss Rush mode comes in a free patch. Nintendo is gracious enough to let us get blitzed at no additional charge, apparently.

Another mode, called Survival Rush, has also been added. You’ll take out as many enemies as possible within specific time limits in this one. Resources only replenish once you’ve defeated a boss, which sounds particularly difficult.

There’s no doubt that Metroid Dread is one of the best Nintendo Switch of 2021. Hopefully, all that hype motivates Retro Studios with Metroid Prime 4’s development, which we’ve still not seen outside a small teaser here or there.

Not that there’s any rush, since it’d be better if Metroid Prime 4 ends up as a hugely delayed game that turned out great rather than something half-baked or underwhelming.
