Conor McGregor said that talks with Manny Pacquiao on a fight this year are “intensifying.”

Conor McGregor has given the strongest indication yet that he will fight Manny Pacquiao this year.

The UFC star, who is scheduled to face Dustin Poirier in a mixed martial arts bout on Jan. 24, is in negotiations with the iconic welterweight beltholder for what would be a lucrative a boxing match.

McGregor has said he wants to win a major boxing title. He was stopped by Floyd Mayweather in his only boxing match, in 2017.

“I know that talks are intensifying for [a fight against Pacquiao] this year,” McGregor told his website The Mac Life. “I am excited for a Manny Pacquiao bout and it looks like it will happen this year. What time this year? I am not sure.

“We’ll have to have some good discussions with Dana White and the UFC and see where it goes. I am open to it all, ready for it all. I will certainly attain a boxing world title before I call it a day. And I would be excited to do that against Emmanuel Pacquiao.”

Pacquiao and his handlers also have made it clear that he’s interested in meeting McGregor in what would be a lucrative pay-per-view fight.

“Right now I want to experience fighting in MMA,” Pacquiao told the Filipino outlet BusinessMirror, which was a reference to McGregor.

Pacquiao, 42, last fought in July 2019, when he defeated Keith Thurman by a split decision to win his 147-pound belt.

Following McGregor’s stream of tweets Friday, in which he claimed he’s going to box Manny Pacquiao in the Middle East, online sportsbook Bovada released odds on the potential matchup.

Pacquaio (62-7-2, 39 KOs) opens as a -450 favorite. For those unfamiliar with gambling lines, this means a $450 bet would win a $100 reward on top of a refund should it cash.

As for McGregor (0-1), the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion comes in at an underdog price of +325. For those unfamiliar with gambling lines, this means a $100 bet placed on McGregor would earn a $325 reward on top of a refund should it cash.

The fight must occur in 2020 or 2021 in order for action to take place.

In 2017, McGregor competed in his lone professional boxing match when he took on Floyd Mayweather in a major crossover pay-per-view event. Mayweather defeated McGregor by TKO in Round 10.

McGregor, 32, has not competed in any combat sport since January, when he defeated Donald Cerrone by first-round TKO at UFC 246. Prior to that fight, McGregor’s previous bout came in October 2018 when he lost to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov by fourth-round submission.

Conor McGregor tweeted that his next fight would be against Manny Pacquiao somewhere in the Middle East.

Conor McGregor says a lot of things. One of his latest comments might be of interest to boxing fans.

The MMA star and one-time boxer tweeted that his next fight would be against Manny Pacquiao somewhere in the Middle East, although he gave no date or specific site.

Should we believe him? Maybe.

His manager, Audie Attar, later told ESPN that McGregor and Pacquiao are indeed negotiating to fight in December or January but that no agreement has been reached.

Attar said the Middle East is one possible site.

McGregor, 32, is known best in boxing circles for his 10th-round knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather in their massive event in 2017.

Pacquiao, 41, hasn’t fought since he outpointed Keith Thurman to win a welterweight title in July.
