Husker linebacker out for year after practice injury

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule has confirmed that a Husker freshman will miss the entire 2023 season.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule has confirmed a Husker freshman will miss the entire 2023 season. Linebacker Maverick Noonan suffered a season-ending knee injury at practice this week.

The coach confirmed the news at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Maverick Noonan hurt his knee on Saturday, out for the year. Not an ACL or anything like that, just kind of a freak thing. So he’ll have surgery this week, and it’ll be about six months. He’ll be fine. He’ll be good as new. Obviously, our hearts go out to Brodie (Tagaloa) and Maverick. Everyone else is trending on being ready if they’re out right now.”

Noonan was a three-star recruit in the class of 2023 and was one of several in-state recruits for the Huskers. His father, Danny Noonan, played for Nebraska from 1983-1986 and was a consensus all-American following the ’86 season as an offensive tackle.

How 2023 Husker football commits are faring so far

If the Huskers can hang onto this group of commits, the future looks bright.

Despite the loss of former head coach Scott Frost, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have 13 commits in their upcoming recruiting class. That bunch have been putting up strong numbers so far with most states’ high school football seasons just past the midway point.

Leading the way in Nebraska’s class of 2023 are 4-star recruits Omarion Miller, a 6-foot-2 wide receiver out of North Caddo (Vivian, LA) High School and Riley van Poppel, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound interior offensive lineman from Argyle (Argyle, TX) High School.

Both are ranked in the top 30 nationally at their position, according to 247 Sports, but they are far from the only future Huskers making an impact. Obviously, the world of recruiting is never 100% stable, especially after the firing of a head coach, so Mickey Joseph and the rest of the Huskers coaching staff will need to have good conversations with their commits to ensure they plan to stay.

Each recruit’s highlights and stats (if applicable and available), are listed below:

Legacy recruit announces commitment to Cornhuskers

Nebraska received its fifth in-state commitment in the 2023 recruiting class.

The son of a former Husker all-American announced his commitment on Friday night. Elkhorn South edge rusher Maverick Noonan made his commitment to the Cornhuskers on social media. His father, Danny Noonan, played for Nebraska from 1983-1986 and was a consensus all-American following the ’86 season as an offensive tackle. He would then be selected in the first round of the 1987 draft by the Dallas Cowboys.

The 3-star recruit is the fifth in-state commitment and the tenth commitment overall to the Huskers 2023 recruiting class. Noonan had taken a trip to Palo Alto and Stanford University as late as last weekend. He had also received offers from Iowa, Iowa State, and Michigan State during his recruiting period.
