Four Rutgers players earn Big Ten All-Conference Awards

Several Rutgers standouts make All-Big Ten honors.

Before the start of the Big Ten tournament, Big Ten Soccer released their All-Conference awards. The Scarlet Knights were well represented as four players were recognized. That list includes Jackson Temple, Matthew Acosta, Nick Collins, and Cole Cuthers.

During the regular, Temple was a scoring machine and earned the first All-Big Ten First team selection of his career. He led the Scarlet Knights in goals with six and points with 16. The Millville native ended the season third in the conference in points.

Like Temple, Acosta played a key role on offense. He set career highs in goals with three and earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team. He also finished second on the team in points with nine. As he has done throughout his college career, Acosta was a constant presence in the lineup and played in all 15 games.

 

Additionally, the Scarlet Knights got a boost from Collins, who burst onto the scene and earned a spot on the conference All-Freshman Team. He started in 11 games and led all Big Ten rookies with 879 minutes played. Collins also chipped in offensively with one assist.

Rounding out the list is Cuthers, who appeared in every single game. He ranked third on the team in minutes played and was named the team’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honoree.

Unfortunately, Rutgers season ended with a loss to Penn State on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament. However, the future is bright, with players such as Collins just getting started.

Rutgers men’s soccer to face Penn State in Quarterfinals of Big Ten Tournament

Rutgers men’s soccer faces a tough test in the Big Ten Tournament.

After a regular season full of ups and downs, Rutgers men’s soccer will travel to University Park to take on Penn State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament. The Nittany Lions are the favorites after winning nine games in the regular season compared to Rutgers five. However, this matchup should provide plenty of fireworks as Rutgers looks to pull off an upset.

During the 2023 campaign, these two programs faced each other once, with Rutgers recording a 2-1 win. Matthew Acosta and Ola Maeland provided the scoring, while Ciaran Dalton made three saves. It was one of three conference wins for Rutgers.

 

While Rutgers spoiled Penn State’s visit to Piscataway, they have a tough test ahead. The Nittany Lions won three of their last five games. During the 2023 campaign, the Scarlet Knights struggled away from Piscataway and posted a 1-6-1 record.

To beat Penn State for the second time this year, Matthew Acosta and Jackson Temple must be at their best. The Rutgers duo scored nine combined goals and recorded 25 points during the regular season.

Fans for both teams can mark their calendars for 6 p.m. on Friday for the fun to begin. So far this year, Penn State is 7-2-1 at home.

With the fall athletics season winding down, Rutgers athletics is preparing for the start of postseason play.

With the fall athletics season winding down, various Rutgers athletics are preparing for the start of postseason play. That list includes men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and field hockey. Rutgers football and volleyball still have a few weeks to prepare for the Big Ten tournament.

Over the last few months, Rutgers fans have had plenty to celebrate. Rutgers field hockey nearly shocked the world and finished 17-0 before dropping their final two games of the season. However, for a program that struggled last year, the future is bright.

Additionally, Rutgers football has been a pleasant surprise this year. With four games left, they have already won six games and positioned themselves to earn a bid for a bowl game.

Now, the fun begins with a Big Ten title on the line for the majority of Rutgers athletics.

Rutgers Acosta, Bouregy and Zalinsky named Big Ten Men’s soccer players to watch

Three Rutgers men’s soccer players named players to watch for hte Big ten.

The Big Ten announced its 2023 men’s soccer preseason honors on Monday afternoon and Rutgers was well represented. Three Scarlets Knights, Matthew Acosta, Jason Bouregy, and Joey Zalinsky, were named to the Big Ten Men’s watch list. For the talented trio, it is an honor they are not unfamiliar with.

This is the second straight year Acosta has been named to the list. He is coming off a stellar sophomore season in which he started all 21 games and led Rutgers in minutes played with 1,742. He also scored two goals in the Big Ten championship.

Like Acosta, Bouregy was essential to Rutgers success last year. He was tied for the team lead in assists with eight, which was also the second most in the Big Ten. The Paramus native also showed a flair for the dramatic as he netted game-winning goals against Northwestern and Wisconsin in September. He finished the 2022 campaign ranked third on the team in points with 14.

Rounding out the trio is Zalinsky, who is an important part of Rutgers defensive unit. He appeared in al1 19 games last year and finished second on the team in minutes played. He also added to his offensive game with his first three career points.

With this trio leading the way, Rutgers has high expectations for the 2023 campaign. Their roster will feature 22 players from its 2022 Big Ten Tournament title team.

The Scarlet Knights will begin the regular season on the road at Delaware on Thursday, Aug. 24, before playing their home opener at Yurcak Field against St. John’s on Monday, Aug. 28.
