Studs and Duds from Nebraska’s loss to Colorado

The Huskers didn’t put on their best showing against Colorado.

The Huskers didn’t put on their best showing against Colorado. The Buffs defeated Nebraska on Saturday by a score of 36-14

While the same can be said about Colorado to a different extent, Nebraska struggled often to stay on their level. As the game progressed, the Buffalos flexed and flexed and flexed again and only seemed to be getting stronger, while Nebraska only seemed to be getting gassed.

While the scoreline doesn’t reflect some players’ performances, it does highlight a trend that seeped over from Week 1, protecting the football. Below are a few players who highlight their successes, and some proved to be more detrimental to the team’s success.

The Huskers now prepare to host Northern Illinois next Saturday at Memorial Stadium for Matt Rhule’s home opener.

What Matt Rhule said after the first day of camp

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon. He started his media availability by talking about the resignation of tight ends coach Bob Wager.

“Not a lot of men would handle it the way he did. I don’t judge people by their tough moments or worse moments, I always judge them by how they respond. I really appreciate him and I’m thankful for him. It was a short time, but he brought some recruits here, he brought some of his kids here. So I appreciate him and wish his family the best. He’s a great coach. I know he’ll do great things.”

Everything Matt Rhule said at Big Ten media days

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule took the podium at the Big Ten media days on Thursday afternoon. He opened his media availability by talking about the three players he brought with him.

It’s great to be here. Thank you all for being here and covering Nebraska football.

I want to make sure I begin by thanking Tony Petitti and the entire Big Ten Conference. In my short amount of time it’s been first-class, and all the other coaches have been amazing.

I want to thank Trev Alberts who is here with us. I appreciate him giving me this job and this great opportunity. I want to thank everyone back home, everyone in Nebraska. It’s been an amazing six months. Excited to get to the season.

I brought three players — Luke Reimer, Jeff Sims and Ethan Piper. All three of those guys, they’re not just here for their own accomplishments — and they’re all very accomplished — they’re also here because they represent our team.

And I know it’s just the beginning — we’re just getting started. But I like this team. I like our players. And I hope you see really good football this fall.

Matt Rhule makes good impression in first Panthers press conference

At times, he sounded more like a minister than an NFL coach.

Matt Rhule likes football, he likes to talk and he really likes getting to talk about football. That much became apparent a few minutes into his introductory press conference as Carolina’s new head coach.

Considering the commitment the Panthers have made to Rhule (seven years, at least $60 million) it’s appropriate that he spoke at length about his vision for the franchise, his philosophies about the sport and how to build a competitive team.

At times, he sounded more like a minister than an NFL coach. Rhule preached a love of football, his desire to build a great organization and his appreciation for the opportunity from team owner David Tepper. He opened with a strong statement: “I believe what I believe,” a fitting mantra for a coach who will need to earn the faith and trust of professional athletes for the first time in his career.

For what it’s worth, Rhule came across as trustworthy, accountable and committed. Those qualities don’t always mean a championship contender is in the works, but they certainly won’t hurt Rhule as he embarks on this journey.

The speech was heavy on run-through-the-wall-for-him inspiration but light specifics.

Rhule deferred commenting on the situation with Cam Newton, saying he wants to have a complete process in place before he talks specific players. He did say he spoke with Newton on Tuesday and liked what he heard. Rhule also said he shares a passion for analytics and sports science with Tepper. As for his staff, Rhule told the media he wants a veteran presence on his staff and several around the NFL have already reached out.

There are a million things for Rhule and the Panthers to sort out before they take the field next season. For now, he started his tenure by making a good first impression.
