Matt Rhule makes good impression in first Panthers press conference

At times, he sounded more like a minister than an NFL coach.

Matt Rhule likes football, he likes to talk and he really likes getting to talk about football. That much became apparent a few minutes into his introductory press conference as Carolina’s new head coach.

Considering the commitment the Panthers have made to Rhule (seven years, at least $60 million) it’s appropriate that he spoke at length about his vision for the franchise, his philosophies about the sport and how to build a competitive team.

At times, he sounded more like a minister than an NFL coach. Rhule preached a love of football, his desire to build a great organization and his appreciation for the opportunity from team owner David Tepper. He opened with a strong statement: “I believe what I believe,” a fitting mantra for a coach who will need to earn the faith and trust of professional athletes for the first time in his career.

For what it’s worth, Rhule came across as trustworthy, accountable and committed. Those qualities don’t always mean a championship contender is in the works, but they certainly won’t hurt Rhule as he embarks on this journey.

The speech was heavy on run-through-the-wall-for-him inspiration but light specifics.

Rhule deferred commenting on the situation with Cam Newton, saying he wants to have a complete process in place before he talks specific players. He did say he spoke with Newton on Tuesday and liked what he heard. Rhule also said he shares a passion for analytics and sports science with Tepper. As for his staff, Rhule told the media he wants a veteran presence on his staff and several around the NFL have already reached out.

There are a million things for Rhule and the Panthers to sort out before they take the field next season. For now, he started his tenure by making a good first impression.

3 things to know about new Panthers coach Matt Rhule

For now, here are three things we know about Carolina’s new head coach.

The Carolina Panthers made a bold move on Tuesday by hiring Baylor coach Matt Rhule to be their new head coach. Rhule has agreed to a seven-year, $60+ million deal – an unheard of commitment for somebody with no previous head coaching experience in the NFL.

Rhule was the wild card of the candidates to replace Ron Rivera and we still have a lot to learn about what kind of play-caller and man he is. For now, here are three things we know about Carolina’s new head coach.

Looking at Rhule’s resume, the thing that stands out the most is how he’s been able to dramatically improve multiple college programs. When he became the coach at Temple (2013), he took over a struggling team that went 2-10 in his first year. The next season, the Owls improve to 6-6, followed by two 10-win seasons. From there, he moved on to Baylor where he engineered a similar turnaround. The Bears went 1-11 his first season, 7-6 the next and then 11-3 this year. Carolina has finished the last two seasons with a disappointing record and has a ton of roster holes to fill. There’s no guarantee any college coach will succeed in the NFL, but Rhule at least has the right kind of experience molding bad teams into contenders.

Analysis: Panthers make bold move with Matt Rhule hire

Panthers owner David Tepper doesn’t do half measures.

Panthers owner David Tepper doesn’t do half measures. If Carolina fans hadn’t already learned that lesson, today it was reinforced in stone.

The move isn’t official, but the Panthers are expected to hire Baylor coach Matt Rhule. In so doing, Tepper made a bold move that should help the franchise break out free of its stale habits and compete in the future.

Rhule’s only previous coaching job in the NFL came in 2012 when he was an offensive line assistant with the Giants. Other candidates like Josh McDaniels and Eric Bienemy had far more experience in the pros, but Tepper made it clear from the start that he wanted a younger, more innovative mind to take over his team.

The transition from coaching in college to the NFL can be a daunting one. However, Rhule has earned near-universal acclaim for what he’s done turning around what was a terrible Baylor program just a few short years ago.

The Panthers may need to pull off a similar revolution if they’re going to be contenders again anytime soon. Former coach Ron Rivera was an excellent locker room leader and culture-type coach, but for all his qualities he seemed resistant to the kind of change that’s required to stay competitive in this league.

If nothing else, Rhule brings a fresh set of eyes and a chance for the organization to start over with a clean slate. Whether or not it works out remains to be seen, but that’s the right approach for this team.
