Triller Triad Combat medical suspensions: One fighter out indefinitely

All fighters competing on the card were suspended by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, though many won’t have to wait long.

Triller debuted Triad Combat this past Saturday, and a handful of notable boxing and MMA fighters squared off under a hybrid ruleset.

Among those who competed were former boxing champion [autotag]Kubrat Pulev[/autotag], former UFC champion [autotag]Frank Mir[/autotag], former UFC welterweight [autotag]Mike Perry[/autotag], former UFC welterweight [autotag]Albert Tumenov[/autotag], former Bellator featherweight [autotag]Derek Campos[/autotag], and former Bellator and UFC heavyweight contender [autotag]Matt Mitrione[/autotag], among others.

Following the completion of their respective bouts, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which regulated the event at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, handed out medical suspensions to all 14 competitors. Unlike some other commissioning bodies, the TDLR does not reveal the specific injuries or reasons the fighters have been suspended.

While the majority of the card were given suspensions under one month, undercard fighter [autotag]Angelina Hoffschneider[/autotag] is facing an indefinite layoff after a first-round knockout loss to Alexa Culp.

Outside of the indefinite suspension, Mir, who lost via standing TKO to Pulev at 1:59 into Round 1, was handed a 30-day sanction.

Triller Triad Combat results: Alexander Flores edges Matt Mitrione despite knockdown

Matt Mitrione’s big knockdown wasn’t enough to beat Alexander Flores at Triller Triad Combat.

[autotag]Alexander Flores[/autotag] was the closest to getting stopped in the Triller Triad Combat co-main event, but still he got his hand raised against [autotag]Matt Mitrione[/autotag].

In a fight that went the distance, Flores was rewarded for his work in the latter rounds to take a unanimous decision over UFC veteran Mitrione by scores of 68-64, 67-65 and 68-64.

The heavyweight fight took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

The pair came out throwing absolute bombs in the first round, coming close so inflicting some major damage. That moment didn’t happen until Round 2, though, when Mitrione connected with a huge right hand that floored Flores and had him hurt. He barely made it up before the 10-count, then the fight wore on.

Some controversy came in Round 3, when Flores locked up a Dagestani handcuff from a clinch position, which is illegal. Mitrione was irate and complained to referee Dan Miragliotta, but he gathered his wits. Mitrione landed a spinning back fist, which was the first of the event.

The pace slowed down on the back half of the fight. There was a lot more clinching and fighting from in close, and both men had difficulty landing that big shot to change the trajectory of the fight.

Flores was arguably more effective in that situation, and a moment in Round 7 where he knocked Mitrione’s mouthpiece. That seemingly made the difference, as he got the nod from the judges.

Video: Mike Perry grabs opponent, Derek Campos takes a swing at Triller Triad Combat faceoffs

The final faceoffs for Saturday’s Triller Triad Combat event produced some eventful moments.

The final faceoffs for Saturday’s Triller Triad Combat event produced some eventful moments.

The card, which takes place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and streams via online pay-per-view with Fite.tv, will mark the debut of a new ruleset in combat sports, and it features a number of MMA veterans on the line.

Fighters will compete in a triangular ring and under two-minute rounds. The idea is to set professional boxers against professional MMA fighters in an environment that’s “leveling the playing field.”

Like in boxing, only punches will be allowed. No kicks or elbows are permitted in Triad Combat. What does differs from boxing, is that this new fighting style will allow clinching and striking from the clinch.

[autotag]Mike Perry[/autotag] is already putting that to the test in the faceoff, as after making weight at 174.4 pounds, he grabbed opponent Sakio Bika by the arm in a potential preview of what we could see on fight night. The pair were separated and ultimately went their own ways.

There was also some faceoff intensity between headliners. Former UFC heavyweight champion [autotag]Frank Mir[/autotag], who meets boxing standout Kubrat Pulev in the main event, got up close and personal with each other by going forehead-to-forehead during the faceoff.

Check out the highlights of the faceoffs in the video above, including the likes of [autotag]Matt Mitrione[/autotag] and [autotag]Derek Campos[/autotag].

Matt Mitrione and two other fighters released following Bellator 262

A trio of fighters have been released following Bellator 262, including heavyweight Matt Mitrione.

MMA heavyweight competitor [autotag]Matt Mitrione[/autotag] has been released from his contract with Bellator.

MMA Junkie confirmed Mitrione was a part of roster cuts following a report from MMA Fighting on Monday evening. Also included in the round of cuts were [autotag]Ronny Markes[/autotag] and [autotag]Adil Benjilany[/autotag] who both also competed at Bellator 262.

After departing from the UFC, Mitrione (13-9 MMA, 4-4-1 BMMA) started his Bellator run on a hot streak of four wins in a row, including a first-round knockout of MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko. Mitrione has since hit a rough skid, going winless in his five straight appearances with the promotion, including four losses and one no contest.

The promotion has opted to part ways with the heavyweight following his most recent first-round loss to Tyrell Fortune at Bellator 262, a stoppage that Mitrione was upset about due to a clash of heads during a takedown.

Markes (19-9 MMA, 0-2 MMA) lost by first-round stoppage against Said Sowma at Bellator 262. The former UFC middleweight failed to record a victory in two outings in the Bellator heavyweight division.

Benjilany (6-3 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) is coming off a unanimous decision win over Johnny Soto at Bellator 262, which ended a two-fight skid. According to his cornerman and UFC welterweight contender Belal Muhammad, Benjilany asked to be released due to lack of activity.

Bellator 262 results: Matt Mitrione erupts in anger after head butt sets up loss to Tyrell Fortune

Tyrell Fortune made Matt Mitrione submit to strikes in the Bellator 262 co-main event, but it came with some controversy.

The Bellator 262 co-main event result was overshadowed by controversy when an inadvertent clash of heads changed the complexion of the fight between [autotag]Tyrell Fortune[/autotag] and [autotag]Matt Mitrione[/autotag].

Fortune (11-1 MA, 11-1 BMMA) ultimately got his hand raised, battering Mitrione (13-9 MMA, 4-4 BMMA) with punches to force a submission to strikes at the 1:45 mark of Round 1.

The bout co-headlined the Bellator 262 lineup from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card aired on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

After a brief feeling-out process on the feet, Fortune charged at Mitrione and tackled him to the ground. Mitrione immediately covered up and complained about a head butt. He was very upset about it, but the referee let the action continue.

Fortune kept top position and unleashed a big swarm of punches. Mitrione couldn’t take it, and he tapped the canvas to end the fight. He was furious about it after the fact and made a big scene, yelling at referee Dan Miragliotta for what he felt was a blunder.

The replay showed Mitrione ducked into an incoming Fortune, however, and he left the cage with his winless skid extended to five fights.

For Fortune, he gets his eighth stoppage in Bellator heavyweight competition, and his seventh by knockout. All of those are divisional records, and now he wants to avenge his only career loss.

“Tim Johnson, get your ass over here,” Fortune said in his post-fight interview with John McCarthy. “That’s my only loss.”

Up-to-the-minute Bellator 262 results include:

  • Tyrell Fortune def. Matt Mitrione via submission (strikes) – Round 1, 1:45
  • Matheus Mattos def. Cee Jay Hamilton via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 1:33

Promotion officials announced the new bookings Thursday. Bellator 262 takes place July 16 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

After coming to Bellator from the UFC in 2016, the former NFL player won his first four fights in the promotion, including a stoppage of Fedor Emelianenko and a win over fellow “Ultimate Fighter 10” cast member Roy Nelson.

But his slide started with a loss to Ryan Bader in Bellator’s heavyweight tournament, then a TKO setback in a rematch with Sergei Kharitonov after a no contest six months prior and a first-round TKO loss to Tim Johnson in September 2020.

Fortune started his career 8-0, all with Bellator, and was on a four-fight finishing streak when he was upset by Johnson at Bellator 239 in February 2020. After a no contest with Jack May in September 2020, he bounced back with a decision win over Sowma this past November and a first-round TKO of May in April on short notice after his Mitrione fight was scrapped.

Golm will make his promotional debut. After going 1-3 in the UFC, he exited on a three-fight skid. But he picked up a knockout win over D.J. Linderman in October 2020 and a submission over Brandon Hebert in January.

Vassell has a two-fight winning streak after a three-fight skid that started when he lost a title fight against Bader at Bellator 186 in November 2017.
