Saints defensive assistant named to Shrine Bowl coaching staff

One current Saints defensive assistant has been named to the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl coaching staff. Matt Giordano will be working with the DB’s:

New Orleans Saints defensive assistant and former NFL safety Matt Giordano has been named to the East-West Shrine Bowl coaching staff for the 2025 event. He’ll be responsible for coaching the defensive backs on the East Team.

Giordano played out his college career at Fresno City College and California-Berkley, before he was ultimately selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL draft.

Over his nine-year NFL career, he played four seasons for the Colts, one season for the Green Bay Packers, one season for the Saints, two seasons for the then-Oakland Raiders and his final season with the then-St. Louis Rams.

As far as his coaching career goes, he started up as the Buchanan High School head coach in Clovis, California from 2016-21, also seeing time at Fresno State as a volunteer assistant (2022) and with the Saints from 2023 to present. He played under Dennis Allen on the Raiders and reunited with his old coach to work in the secondary.

It will be interesting to watch what the future holds for Giordano, with the Saints expected to make several changes within the staff and the team roster over the offseason.

Several Saints assistants working with 2024 draft prospects at Shrine Bowl

Several Saints assistant coaches are working with 2024 draft prospects at the East-West Shrine Bowl. New Orleans added 8 players from last year’s event:

The New Orleans Saints will have a heavy presence at this year’s East-West Shrine Bowl, which makes sense given how many future NFL players have participated in the event. And the 2024 draft class is following that pattern.

Three Saints assistant coaches have been assigned to work with draft prospects at this year’s Shrine Bowl, all on the West Team. It’s as good an opportunity for future pros to work with NFL coaches as it is for each of these men to advance their careers.

Here’s a quick look at them and the players they’ll be working with:

Saints hire another one of Dennis Allen’s former players to their coaching staff

The Saints hired another one of Dennis Allen’s former players to their coaching staff, bringing in Matt Giordano to coach the secondary:

NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that the New Orleans Saints have hired another one of Dennis Allen’s former players to their coaching staff, bringing in Matt Giordano to work with the secondary. Giordano played in the NFL from 2005 to 2013, twice crossing paths with Allen — first with the Saints in 2010 and later with the Raiders in 2012.

Giordano replaces Sterling Moore as the assistant secondary coach, who left the team earlier this year. He played college football at California and began his coaching career at his old high school before returning to the pros.

The Saints have a number of their former players on their coaching staff already, including offensive assistant Jahri Evans and this year’s training camp intern La’Roi Glover. They also invited former wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. to join them for camp as another coaching intern. It’s good to see former players getting these opportunities to advance their careers after turning to coaching.
