Dolphins worked out 7 free agents on Tuesday

Miami had multiple free agents in for workouts on Tuesday.

The Miami Dolphins, after losing to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, returned to South Florida where they held tryouts for seven different free agents on Tuesday.

While general manager Chris Grier hasn’t pulled the trigger on any of them yet, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the team ink one of them to a deal in the coming days or after the season ends on a futures/reserve contract.

Here’s a quick look at all seven players the Dolphins hosted:

Report: Patriots add WR to boost practice squad depth

The Patriots are boosting their practice squad depth at WR.

The New England Patriots reportedly signed wide receiver Mathew Sexton to the practice squad. The Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed reported the news on Wednesday.

Sexton has spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers. He most recently was a member of the Atlanta Falcons.

Sexton played four seasons at Eastern Michigan and appeared in 45 games. He tallied 100 catches for 1,335 yards and nine touchdowns. Sexton could be viewed as a depth piece. The Patriots’ best receiver, Demario Douglas, missed Wednesday’s practice due to a head injury he suffered at the end of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

The receiver position has been a revolving door of players coming and going this year with injuries. This is a real opportunity for a player like Sexton to show his value and stick around for a team basically looking for anything that works at this point.

Chiefs waive WR Mathew Sexton from injured reserve

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived receiver Mathew Sexton from the injured reserve list with an injury settlement, per the NFL’s transaction report.

Sexton, 24, was waived with an injury designation in June. He cleared waivers which put him on the Chiefs’ injured reserve list, thus giving him the option to reach an injury settlement with the team in order to become a free agent.

The Chiefs had signed Sexton back in January to a reserve/future deal. An undrafted free agent out of Eastern Michigan, Sexton played for The Spring League’s Aviators in 2021 and was later signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He participated in a couple preseason games in 2021 but has not yet seen any NFL regular season action.

Although he hasn’t stuck with a team, Sexton has tools that have allowed him to stand out in scouting circles. After earning 1,335 yards and nine touchdowns on 100 receptions along with three total return touchdowns at Eastern Michigan, the 5-foot-10, 176-pounder ran a low-4.3-second 40-yard dash at the Michigan State’s pro day leading up to the 2020 NFL draft.

Chiefs to sign WR Mathew Sexton to reserve/future contract

The #Chiefs are set to sign former Eastern Michigan, Spring League Aviators and #Steelers WR Mathew Sexton to a reserve/future deal.

The Kansas City Chiefs are adding more speed to the WR corps for the 2022 NFL offseason.

As first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs plan to sign former Eastern Michigan WR Mathew Sexton to a reserve/future deal. Sexton, an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL draft, played in the Spring League after not receiving much NFL interest in a COVID-19-altered pre-draft circuit. He eventually signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March of 2021 and stuck with them through the preseason, but he was among the team’s final roster cuts.

Again, if you’re unfamiliar with reserve/future deals, they allow teams to sign players for next season before the end of the current league year. Each of these players won’t count against the Chiefs’ roster until the new league year begins and the 90-man offseason roster is opened up for Kansas City.

Sexton caught some attention in 2021 after running a 4.3-4.4 range 40-yard dash at the Michigan State Pro Day. In four seasons at Eastern Michigan, the 5-11 and 175-pound receiver caught 100 passes for 1,335 and nine touchdowns. He was also a consistent special teamer, with 21 kick returns for 343 yards and two punts returns for 77 yards and a touchdown. Special teams will be his calling card should he make an NFL roster.

Sexton is now the second player the Chiefs have added on a reserve/future contract, joining RB Brenden Knox. The team carried 12 receivers on the 90-man offseason roster last offseason. Expect them to add a few more to the group for the 2022 NFL offseason.
