The Masters Tournament begins Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club. We continue poring over the odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook while searching for the best value bets. Below, we look at the odds and lines for 2021 Masters placings, groups and first-round leader and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Dustin Johnson is back to defend his 2020 title from the fall. He’s No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings while looking to be the first back-to-back Masters champ since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002. Woods, the 2019 Masters champion, isn’t playing this year after he was involved in a single-vehicle accident in late February.

Augusta National is expected to play considerably tougher this week than it did in the fall when Johnson won by 5 strokes at a record of 20-under par.

2021 Masters picks: Placings

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 9:41 a.m. ET.

Top 5: Matt Kuchar (+1400)

Kuchar struggled upon the PGA Tour’s mid-June restart in 2020. He won the Asian Tour’s SMBC Singapore Open in January but had just one top-10 finish on American soil the rest of the year.

He recently resurfaced with a third-place finish at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and followed it up with a T-12 at last week’s Valero Texas Open. The nine-time PGA Tour champ has three career top-5 finishes at Augusta National with the most recent being a T-4 in 2017.

Top 10: Francesco Molinari (+900)

Molinari missed the cut at the fall Masters following a career-best T-5 finish in 2019. The former Open Championship winner is better suited for the firm and fast conditions expected this week, and he showed glimpses of his old form early this year with a T-8 at The American Express and a T-10 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

2021 Masters picks: Top player

Top European: Matt Fitzpatrick (+1200)

There are plenty of betting options available for Fitzpatrick, who enters Masters Week with a Tour-best 2.56 strokes gained on the average pro per round over his last 20 rounds.

The 12-1 payout for Top European is the most profitable bet for the Englishman (outside of the +4500 odds for him to win), but he can also be backed as Top English (+400) and Top GB and Ireland (+650).

Top left hander: Robert MacIntyre (+400)

There are only five lefties participating in the 2021 Masters with 2012 and 2014 champ Bubba Watson the clear favorite at +200. There’s value on the Scotsman off an impressive run at the WGC-Match Play.

He can also be backed for Top Debutant (+275) and Top Scot (-150).

2021 Masters picks: First-round leader

Jon Rahm (+2000)

Rahm is seventh on the PGA Tour with a Round 1 scoring average of 69.00 through 10 events. That’s the same score with which he began each of his last two Masters appearances in the fall and in 2019.

Anecdotally, he and his wife, Kelley, welcomed a baby boy last weekend. It could be an added early boost for Golfweek’s top-ranked golfer.

Will Zalatoris (+5000)

Zalatoris is the favorite for the aforementioned Top Debutant group at +110. Golfweek’s ninth-ranked golfer already recorded two top-10 finishes in his rookie season on Tour. He’s in Thursday morning’s fifth group off the tee and will be hitting Augusta National in peak conditions.

2021 Masters Picks: First-round and 72-hole matchups

Check out the best bets for the 2021 Masters Tournament’s first round and 72-hole matchups.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01es6rjnsp3c84zkm6 player_id=none image=https://golfweek.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Masters Tournament begins Thursday morning with the first group of Michael Thompson and Hudson Swafford going off the first tee at 8 a.m. ET. BetMGM Sportsbook has odds and lines for both Round 1 3-ball and 72-hole head-to-head matchups. Below, we look at the odds and lines for the top 2021 Masters matchups and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

The first-round matchups are assigned based on the groups for the first two rounds of the tournament, which were released Wednesday afternoon. Head-to-head matchups pair players of a similar world ranking, nationality or general intrigue.

Unlike in the first-ever fall Masters in mid-November, all 88 golfers in the field will hit their first shot off of the first tee. The customary format was altered in the fall to accommodate less daylight.

2021 Masters picks: Round 1 3-ball matchups

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 9:35 a.m. ET.

Michael Thompson (-125) vs. Hudson Swafford

Get some early action with the first pairing to hit Augusta National Golf Club in 2021 after the ceremonial opening tee shots. Thompson is 74th in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings and tied for 25th at the 2013 Masters.

Swafford is 357th in the rankings and missed the cut in his lone appearance here (2017).

Xander Schauffele vs. Jon Rahm (+150) vs. Rory McIlroy

Rahm enters the week at No. 1 in the Golfweek world rankings and fresh off the birth of his and his wife’s baby last weekend. He also started with an opening round of 3-under par, 69 in each of the last two runnings of the Masters.

McIlroy and Schauffele both missed the cut at The Players Championship.

Jordan Spieth vs. Cameron Smith (+225) vs. Collin Morikawa

There’s great value on Smith with the highest odds of this three-man group. The Aussie’s price is inflated against two high-profile American golfers. Both Spieth and Morikawa are major winners, but Smith has the better recent results at Augusta National with a T-5 in 2018 and T-2 in 2020.

2021 Masters picks: 72-hole head-to-head matchups

Bryson DeChambeau (-125) vs. Jordan Spieth

The most intriguing 72-hole matchup pits a pair of golfers who share the second-best odds to win the tournament. Spieth is fresh off a victory at the Valero Texas Open, but DeChambeau recently won the Arnold Palmer Invitational against a stronger field and tied for third at The Players the next week.

DeChambeau is sixth in the Golfweek rankings while Spieth is 33rd.

Dustin Johnson vs. Justin Thomas (-105)

Johnson and Thomas rank first and second, respectively, in the Official World Golf Ranking. While Johnson is the defending champ, his 2021 results have been largely unimpressive outside of a victory at the European Tour’s Saudi International in February.

Thomas has been in the better recent form with a victory against most of this week’s top competition at The Players. He’s worth backing as the more profitable play as Johnson attempts to be the first back-to-back Masters champ since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002.

Masters: 1 bet for each of the favorites at Augusta National

Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm. Here’s how to bet on the favorites at Augusta National for the 2021 Masters Tournament.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01es6rjnsp3c84zkm6 player_id=none image=https://golfweek.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

A field of 88 is at Augusta National Golf Club for the Masters Tournament. The odds to win 2021’s first major range from +900 for defending champion Dustin Johnson up to +500000 for 1987 champion Larry Mize. Below, we highlight one prop bet for each of the favorites based on the 2021 Masters odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Johnson has been the betting favorite since donning his first career green jacket in mid-November. He won the first-ever fall Masters by five strokes at a record 20-under par. He enters Masters Week No. 2 by the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings.

There have been fewer bigger risers than 2015 Masters champion Jordan Spieth, who opened at +6000 but now shares the second-best odds at +1100 after winning last week’s Valero Texas Open.

2021 Masters picks: How to bet the favorites

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 7:27 p.m. ET.

Dustin Johnson (+900 to win)

Our bet: Top-10 finish (-115)

Johnson has an excellent chance to be the first back-to-back Masters winner since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002, as he seeks his fifth international win since last June. There’s no safer bet for the Masters, however, than backing Johnson for a sixth straight top-10 finish at Augusta National.

Bryson DeChambeau (+1100)

Our bet: Top-5 finish (+225)

DeChambeau closed as the pre-tournament betting favorite in the fall but finished just T-34. He now shares the second-best odds to win the tournament but still offers double-up potential with four places of insurance.

Jon Rahm (+1100)

Our bet: First-round leader (+2000)

Rahm is seventh on Tour in Round 1 scoring average for the 2020-21 season at 69.00. He and his wife just welcomed a baby boy last weekend, so he’ll look to come out strong. He also opened with a 3-under 69 in each of his last two Masters appearances.

Jordan Spieth (+1100)

Our bet: Top former winner (+240)

Spieth’s second to Johnson (+175) in this pool, but he enters in the much better form off of his Texas Open win. He has four other top-10 finishes in his first eight events to start 2021.

Justin Thomas (+1100)

Our bet: Top American (+700)

Thomas is second in the Official World Golf Ranking but shares the second-best odds in this pool with DeChambeau, who’s fifth. He’s coming off his Players Championship victory against most of this week’s top competition.

Rory McIlroy (+1800)

Our bet: Top GB and Ireland (+275)

The former world No. 1 recently changed swing coaches ahead of his latest attempt at the career grand slam. He has been in bad form and isn’t worth an outright bet at +1800, but he’s a solid pick at nearly 3-1 in this 16-man group.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Patrick Cantlay (+2000)

Our bet: Group B winner (+300)

Cantlay’s second by the odds in this group. He won the Zozo Championship in the fall against an elite and condensed field. He’s fifth on Tour and first in this group in total strokes gained on the field per round this season.

Xander Schauffele (+2200)

Our bet: To make the cut – No (+400)

Hasn’t missed the cut in four career appearances at the Masters and was a co-runner-up in 2019, but he’s coming off a missed cut at The Players. A $100 bet offers a $400 return if he misses the weekend again.

Brooks Koepka (+2500)

Our bet: To win (+2500)

My favorite pick to win the Masters, Koepka was as low as +1200 by the futures odds after winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Trust those odds amid injury concerns following knee surgery in mid-March.

Collin Morikawa (+2800)

Our bet: Top-20 finish (+100)

The winner of the 2020 PGA Championship, Morikawa is offering an even-money return with a top-20 finish after he tied for 44th in the fall. He should fare better in his second go-around at Augusta National and under more conventional conditions.

Dustin Johnson’s odds and betting options for 2021 Masters

Here are Dustin Johnson’s odds and betting options for the 2021 Masters Tournament at Augusta National.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01es6rjnsp3c84zkm6 player_id=none image=https://golfweek.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

After winning his first career green jacket in the fall, Dustin Johnson returns to Augusta National Golf Club to defend his Masters title just five months later. Below, we look at the 2021 Masters odds for Dustin Johnson and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Johnson slipped to No. 2 in the latest update of the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings amid a relatively lackluster start to his 2021 schedule.

He won three times in his final 11 events of 2020 in addition to winning the season-long points race and the FedEx Cup. He won the Masters by five strokes at 20-under par in his final event of the calendar year.

His only win through six international events to start 2021 was at the European Tour’s Saudi International, and he has just one top-10 finish in five events on American soil.

Best bets for Dustin Johnson at the 2021 Masters

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 3:08 a.m. ET.

Tournament winner: +900

If you truly in believe in Johnson going back-to-back at Augusta National, betting him at 9-1 to win the tournament offers the highest payout. A $100 bet would return a profit of $900 with an implied win probability of 10 percent in the field of 88.

The biggest hurdle may be the fact no one has gone back-to-back as Masters champion since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002. Even with unimpressive recent results, Johnson leads the Tour with 2.51 total strokes gained on the field per round over 28 measured rounds on the 2020-21 season.

Top-10 finish: -115

A safer bet is to back Johnson for what would be his sixth straight top-10 finish at the Masters. It would take a $115 bet to fetch a profit of $100, but there are seemingly few safer bets on the board.

He tied for second in 2019 and has missed the cut just once in 10 career appearances. In addition, he tied for second at the 2020 PGA Championship and for sixth at the US Open.

Special Masters Betting Promotion!

Top American: +600

The second-most profitable bet on Johnson is for him to finish as the top American, where a $100 bet would fetch a profit of $600 with an implied win probability of 14.29 percent.

Four of the top-five and 11 of the top-14 betting favorites are American. We get only a slightly reduced price on Johnson while leaving open the possibility of Jon Rahm (+1100), Rory McIlroy (+1800), Viktor Hovland (+3300) or any other long-shot international winner donning the green jacket.

Top former winner: +175

With Woods, the 2019 Masters champ, not participating this year, Johnson’s greatest competition in this pool is 2015 Masters winner and recent Valero Texas Open champ Jordan Spieth (+240). Spieth shares the second-best odds to win the tournament at +1100.

The only other real threats to Johnson are Patrick Reed (+550), Sergio Garcia (+900), Adam Scott (+1000) and Bubba Watson (+1200). Each of them is priced at +3000 or higher to win the Masters with implied win probabilities of 3.23 percent or lower.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Tournament matchup vs. Justin Thomas: -135

Johnson’s 72-hole tournament matchup is against the reigning Players Championship winner and Golfweek’s ninth-ranked golfer.

Johnson finished better than Thomas in every Masters in which they both participated to date. Additionally, Johnson has averaged 2.23 strokes gained on the field per round at ANGC; Thomas averaged 1.94.

It would take a $135 bet on Johnson to return a profit of $100 if he finishes better than Thomas by the end of the fourth round.

Makin’ money during the Masters: Has COVID impacted betting? Best choice for first-time winner?

Tiger Woods? Brooks Koepka? Dustin Johnson? Who’s the best outright pick for the Masters at Augusta National. Golfweek checks in with BetMGM

Players and fans alike waited seven months from its traditional April dates due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but now the 2020 Masters is finally here.

Hopefully, the wait pays off.

But while fans wait for the first round to begin Thursday, there are many bets that can be made so the Masters can pay off in another, more fiscal way.

BetMGM’s Vice President of Trading Jason Scott, from Brisbane, Australia, spoke with Golfweek about the biggest questions when it comes to betting on the Masters, the most interesting storylines to capitalize on and what, if anything, has COVID-19 done to betting odds.

Below are a few of the best storylines entering the 2020 Masters and how they could relate to your bank account.

The Masters 2020

Tiger repeats

He successfully defended his title at Augusta National before, but can he do it again?

It was more than 18 years ago Tiger Woods defended his 2001 Masters title at the 2002 tournament. After winning his 15th major championship and fifth green jacket last April, Woods returns to Augusta National after holding the title of reigning champion for 19 months.

Woods, the most popular golfer to bet on in any tournament he plays, kept that reputation for the November Masters. But at the Masters, Woods has 40-1 outright odds for defending his 2019 title.

Those odds haven’t changed how many people are betting on the Big Cat this week.

“We’ve written more tickets on Tiger than any other three players combined,” Scott said when he spoke Tuesday with Golfweek.

Betting on Woods as the outright winner isn’t the best bet, so if fans want to put money down on Woods, there are other, safer bets. Scott said a few suggestions for betting on Woods other than outright are Woods finishing in the top 10 or, more realistically, making the cut or not.

Best bet for first-time winner

Some of the best Masters Tournaments have ended with a player grinning from ear to ear as they put on a green jacket for the first time. A few of the favorites in this week’s field are winless at Augusta National.

Between Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau, Scott picked his favorite for first-time winner.

Koepka is fresh off his knee and hip-related injuries, so his outright odds are 16-1. DeChambeau, who has historically not played well at Augusta National with a best finish in 2016 (21st), has odds of 15-2. Dustin Johnson, who won the Tour Championship and finished T-2 at last week’s Vivint Houston Open, is Scott’s favorite to win with 9-1 odds.

Out of these three favorites, Scott picked DJ. Johnson played at Memorial Park last week after finishing isolation due to testing positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 13.

“He’s had good form. He played last week with his chin up. I thought he hit the ball well last week. His putting was just a bit off. …  I was probably nervous about (his positive COVID test) last week and thought he was a good risk last week but … I think he’ll be fine this week.”

Why Koepka, Bryson and DJ headline the potential time winners, there are a few sleepers Scott pointed out.

“I think Hideki Matsuyama has been good the past few weeks. I think 25-1, he has some interest to me,” Scott said. “The other obvious one is (Jon) Rahm who’s been playing well for a long time. … He finished top-10 last year at Augusta and the year before he was competitive as well so his form around the course is good.

“What’s interesting is Bryson’s isn’t. Bryson’s played four times, sixteen tournaments and only broken 70 once. I think he’s odds probably should be a little bigger.”

In addition to his 21st place finish in 2016, DeChambeau has finished the Masters 28th and 29th respectively over the past two tournaments. One thing that’s changed since DeChambeau last visited Augusta National is his major, 30-pound muscle gain and his first major title at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

This time may be different.

“It’s always been putting and chipping around Augusta. But yeah, the extra yards are certainly going to help,” Scott said. “He was a different player last year. But if you look at the courses he’s preformed well this year, he had (performed) well there previously.”

Young guys and Augusta National

One of the (few) highlights of 2020 has been watching the young stars play and compete with the world’s top ranked players. Which one should bettors keep their eyes — and potentially bets — on?

“I’d be on (Matthew) Wolff,” Scott said. “It always favors the long-hitters and he proved it at the U.S. Open he can compete when he ran second to Bryson.”

The most impressive young stars in the field are Matthew Wolff, who won his first Tour title at the 2019 3M Open and finished second at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot; Viktor Hovland who won the Puerto Rico Open last season and has three top-25 finishes in the first four events of the season; and Collin Morikawa won his first major at the PGA Championship, his second Tour title of the year and third overall.

Has COVID affected betting odds at the Masters?

What has COVID affected at the 2020 Masters? Try everything.

No fans on site, no in-person Masters shop, no Par 3 contest. The list goes on and on. But has it affected betting odds? Scott says not really.

“I think really minutely (odds have been impacted,)” Scott said. “The players at the disadvantage are Tiger and Phil (Mickelson) and Rory (McIlroy) and DeChambeau, the ones that have huge, big galleries that bounce off them and keep the ball from going in the rubbish. So that’s always been a big advantage for those guys.

“I’ve spoken to caddies and I know for a fact sometimes they’ll overclub because they know if they go too far, it’ll hit the crowd.”

Despite some of the disadvantages to now having a crowd and the irregular golf atmosphere, Scott said not to read too much into it since players are largely used to it since golf’s restart in June.
