Florida looking to flip this LSU commit after tight end flipped to Stanford

Losing C.J. Hawkins to Stanford might not be so bad if Florida can flip this LSU commit that’s higher ranked.

Mason Taylor is currently committed to LSU, but Florida is beginning to push for the three-star tight after losing one of its commits at the position earlier this month, according to 247Sports.

C.J. Hawkins announced his de-commitment from Florida and flip to Stanford on Twitter at the beginning of October, leaving tight ends coach Tim Brewster with an open slot to fill. With the announcement of Ed Orgeron and LSU separating at the end of the season, the Tigers are a natural target to try and flip recruits from. That’s where Taylor comes in.

After a June visit, Taylor earned a scholarship offer from Florida, but his July commitment to LSU ended any contact with the school until a few weeks ago.

“They started talking to me maybe a week and a half ago or two weeks ago,” Taylor said to 247Sports. “Things have been going great. Just checking in. We are going to schedule a visit for FSU for the game so I will be up there.”

The planned visit indicates that Taylor is indeed open to changing his commitment, but Orgeron has already reached out to try and retain him for the next coach. Taylor also has an offer from the University of Alabama, so he has a clear path to play in the SEC even if LSU doesn’t feel right for him anymore.

He’ll wait to figure things out for now, but it’s safe to say that Taylor’s recruitment is wide open. At No. 462 on the 247Sports Composite, Taylor is well ahead of Hawkins at No. 620. He’s also an in-state recruit, so Brewster and company will have plenty of chances to visit him down in South Florida.

LSU commit Mason Taylor shines in season opener

LSU commit Mason Taylor played big in his season debut for St. Thomas Aquinas out of Fort Lauderdale, Fl.

Not only is college football getting ready to get into full swing, but high schools across the country are also doing the same. In a huge matchup between top high schools, a future Tiger player had his opportunity to get back on the football field.

LSU commit Mason Taylor showed off his ability to catch the football in the season opener for St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL). Another top tight end heading to Baton Rouge, Lousiana, for the 2022 season. Both he and Jake Johnson have committed to play for Ed Orgeron. Taylor is the son of former Miami Dolphin Jason Taylor. Johnson is the son of former Tampa Bay quarterback Brad Johnson. These tight ends were made to play big-time football.

Taylor caught nine passes for 132 yards for the Raiders.

Taylor obviously has some good bloodlines as he’s also the nephew of former NFL linebacker Zach Thomas, but there were some questions about just how dynamic of a pass catcher he could be in college as he hasn’t exactly tested off the charts in the past. Turns out, Taylor can be pretty effective while working out of the slot and is capable of moving the chains after the catch, which is always encouraging.

Taylor also wasn’t afraid to put his face mask on someone Saturday as he served as a lead blocker on multiple occasions and was able to open up some running lanes for the Raiders. Stock up for Taylor, who looks like the perfect TE2 for Ed Orgeron’s Tigers in a recruiting class that also includes Top247 tight end Jake Johnson. – per 247Sports
