Oklahoma leads Missouri State 41-0 at halftime

Oklahoma is firing on all cylinders in their season opener, leading Missouri State 41-0 at halftime.

Leading the way is redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler, who is 14-for-17 for 290 yards and four touchdowns in his starting debut. Two of his three incompletions were both drops for eventual touchdowns.

A pair of true freshman scored the first two touchdowns of the game for OU, as Seth McGowan and Marvin Mims found the end zone early.

The Sooners offense opened up with a five-play, 58-yard touchdown drive commandeered by Rattler, and McGowan punched it into the endzone from one yard out. McGowan led Oklahoma with 34 yards rushing on five carries.

On the second drive, Rattler delivered a strike to Mims for a 58-yard score. The next was to Charleston Rambo for a 53-yard touchdown reception.

The Sooners would eventually tack on two field goals and one more touchdown in the second quarter.

Alex Grinch’s defense held strong, pitching a shutout and allowing just 37 yards of offense in the first two quarters. They finished with seven three-and-outs. Linebacker Brian Asamoah led the Sooners with five total tackles.

There is a ton of momentum to having a 2020 college football season these days. No definite signs, yet, but the season would start less than 100 days from now.

Sooners Wire will be creating player cards for readers to be introduced to the 2020 roster.

Here is the No. 17 for the Sooners.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Name: Marvin Mims

Number: No. 17

Year: Freshman

Position: Wide receiver

Hometown: Frisco, Texas

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 168 pounds

Freshman wide receiver Marvin Mims could get his chance much sooner than expected.

With the offseason injury bug hitting Oklahoma’s playmaking core, and sophomore receiver Trejan Bridges sitting out an unknown amount of games due to a 2019 suspension, Mims could be in a starting role in Oklahoma’s first game as a true freshman next season.

A four-star out of Frisco Lone Star high school, Mims helped lead his team to a 14-1 record and the Texas 5A-1 semifinals, all while breaking the Texas state and national receiving yards record for a single season.

Mims could have big play ability out of the gate for the Sooners, something Lincoln Riley has relied on heavily in his tenure with Oklahoma. Mims will be vying for the H-receiver role with Drake Stoops and Trejan Bridges when he returns from suspension.

Oklahoma commit Marvin Mims breaks Texas high school, national record for receiving yards

After committing to Oklahoma in mid-Nov., four-star receiver Marvin Mims broke a state and national record his senior year

After committing to Oklahoma in mid-Nov., four-star receiver Marvin Mims broke the state and national record for receiving yards in a single-season.

The Frisco Lone Star High School (Frisco, Texas) product needed 156 yards to break the Texas state record of 2,427 yards, and broke that with a 62-yard touchdown in the third quarter of Lone Star’s regional final against Lancaster High School. The previous record was set in 1998.

He broke the national single-season record deep into the third quarter, breaking the previous record of 2,464 yards set by J.P. Shohfi in 2015, with a 6-yard reception late in the third quarter of Lone Star’s game.

Mims finished with 214 yards on 10 catches with two touchdowns in his win Friday night. He now has seven games with over 200 receiving yards this season, one with 303 yards and three touchdowns.

If Frisco Lone Star can make it to the state championship, he’ll get his chance at the Texas record for career receiving yards, set by former Longhorn Jordan Shipley who had 5,342 yards from 2000-03.

Mims will sign with Oklahoma on the early National Signing Day on Dec. 18.

Oklahoma lands commitment from 3-star receiver Marvin Mims

Oklahoma continues to target the Dallas-Fort Worth area for receivers. The Sooners second receiver from the 2020 class committed Thursday.

Oklahoma continues to target the Dallas-Fort Worth area for pass-catchers.

After landing a trio from the DFW metroplex in 2019, the Sooners have landed their second for the 2020 class. Three-star receiver Marvin Mims (Frisco Lone Star; Frisco, Texas) announced that he was flipping from Stanford to Oklahoma Thursday night, making him the Sooners 18th commitment for the 2020 class.

Mims committed to Stanford over Oklahoma and a handful of other suitors on Aug. 14. As the season went on, the idea of Mims looking back towards the Sooners came to fruition with a visit and flip from the Cardinal.

The 6-foot-1, 168 pound receiver joins Trevon West as the receivers for this 2020 class. While West has the speed, Mims has the intangibles, route-running and toughness in the slot that has fit well at Oklahoma, most recently with Sterling Shepard.

Head coach Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma are likely done at the skill positions for the 2020 class after Thursday’s commitment.

The first national signing day is just over a month away on Dec. 18.

Oklahoma lands commitment from 4-star Texas WR Marvin Mims

Marvin Mims, the four-star senior wide receiver for undefeated Frisco (Texas) Lone Star High, agreed to join Oklahoma with a Thursday night commitment.

Oklahoma’s Texas receiver recruiting pipeline continues to produce, with another four-star pass catcher from the Lone Star State on his way to the Sooners.

Marvin Mims, a four-star wide receiver for Frisco (Texas) Lone Star High School, committed to Oklahoma on Thursday evening. The 5-foot-11, 161-pound Under Armour All-American picked the Sooners ahead of scholarship offers from Colorado, Stanford and a whopping 27 other major programs.

The District 5-5A-I Offensive MVP as a junior, Mims had 1,158 yards and 14 touchdowns in his penultimate high school campaign. A previous Stanford commit, Mims picked Oklahoma after a recent visit to Norman. His commitment to Oklahoma will allow Mims to focus on his 10-0 Lone Star team’s run at a state title, a pursuit toward which he has gained 1,866 yards and 24 touchdowns on 73 receptions as a senior.

It’s unknown whether Mims will graduate early and begin his Oklahoma career in January or continue on with his final scholastic basketball season; as a junior, he averaged 12 points-per-game on the basketball court.

Now, the focus turns back to the football field, and not a moment too soon; Lone Star returns to action in the Class 5A state playoffs against Mansfield (Texas) Legacy High.
