‘Marvel’s Avengers’ is getting rid of its paid boosts already

The controversial paid consumables are no more.

Marvel’s Avengers  is removing some controversial paid consumables that help players gain materials and experience points faster. Yes, already!

Developer Crystal Dynamics took the time to address fans about the situation on Tuesday — just shy of one month after implementing the consumables.

“We apologize for not responding sooner to your concerns about the addition of paid consumables in the Marketplace,” Crystal Dynamics said on Twitter. “We introduced them as an option for an evolving player base, and did not see them as pay-to-win since they don’t offer power directly.”

Check out the complete statement from Crystal Dynamics for yourself below.

Most of the controversy surrounding these microtransactions came from an interview with Crystal Dynamics’ studio head Scott Amos did back in 2019.

“Your Black Widow could be different to my Black Widow — just a little, maybe a lot depending on what you favor and how you unlock things,” Amos said via GamesIndustry.biz. “In terms of how we monetize, we’ll have cosmetics. No gameplay paywalls.”

Regardless of whether or not someone saw the consumables as pay-to-win or not, they’re gone. Players that already bought them will still have access, however, but they’ll turn into earnable rewards for everyone else from now on.

Marvel’s Avengers  came to Xbox Games Pass recently if you’re a subscriber and wanna try the game out. Some users reported technical issues early on, however.

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ is offering paid boosts despite its developers saying that wouldn’t happen

Paid ‘consumables’ give a pay-to-win advantage to those willing to hand over the cash.

Yup, there’s a fresh batch of game-altering microtransactions in  Marvel’s Avengers that allow players to gather resources and gain experience points faster, VGC  reported Friday. Giving players that shell out real money advantages over those that don’t.

These ‘consumables’ were not in Marvel’s Avengers before its  release on Xbox Games Pass last week. While boosts like these are common in live-service titles like this, fans are pretty upset since developer Crystal Dynamics said years ago there wouldn’t be any gameplay altering microtransactions in Marvel’s Avengers.

“The idea, from the beginning, is that we want you to be able to customize your hero; how they look, how they play, the gear they have and how they use it,” Scott Amos, studio head at Crystal Dynamics, said via GamesIndustry.biz in 2019. “Your Black Widow could be different to my Black Widow — just a little, maybe a lot depending on what you favor and how you unlock things. In terms of how we monetize, we’ll have cosmetics. No gameplay paywalls.”

So yeah, these new consumables go against Amos’ comments. Not the best look, especially as Marvel’s Avengers is already facing  issues since coming to Xbox Games Pass. However, Crystal Dynamics might double back on the consumables idea if that old interview is any indication.

“We make this for the fans,” Amos said. “At the end of the day, we will listen to them and get feedback from them, and we’ll adjust everything to serve that need.”

Guess we’ll see how it goes.

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ isn’t working for some Xbox Game Pass subscribers

Earth’s mightiest heroes are experiencing connection issues.

Marvel’s Avengers  came to Xbox Game Pass on Thursday, and many people are saying it’s not working. Specifically, the game itself isn’t downloading at all for subscribers.

Over on  r/XboxGamePass, there are loads of posts claiming Marvel’s Avengers either stops downloading before it’s finished or won’t begin downloading at all. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason behind the failing downloads, and the problems don’t appear to affect other games on Xbox Game Pass.

“I’ve tried downloading marvel avengers twice now,” user General_Media_3544  said. “It gets to about 10-15GB and just says installation stopped and starts over again.”

“I’ve been trying since Saturday to sort it and nothing works,” user dwm94  said in another thread about the issues. Others  are claiming  the game will nearly finish downloading before it fails. That’s a big deal when you consider that Marvel’s Avengers is a 125GB download.

Most of these posts don’t specify a platform, so there’s no telling if the problems are on Xbox, PC, or both.

Neither developer Crystal Dynamics nor publisher Square Enix has said anything about these problems yet, so it’s hard to tell if the right people are even aware. Considering Marvel’s Avengers  joining Xbox Game Pass was seen by many as a second chance for the struggling beat’em up, it’s unfortunate that some are running into issues.

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ will come to Xbox Game Pass soon

Game Pass subscribers will get access to earth’s mightiest heroes for free.

Marvel’s Avengers came out just over a year ago, and now it’s heading to Xbox Game Pass. Developer Crystal Dynamics is celebrating the game’s one-year anniversary by bringing it to Microsoft’s wildly popular subscription service.

On Sept. 30, Marvel’s Avengers and all of its DLC, including the recent Black Panther: War for Wakanda expansion, will be free for anyone with an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Xbox Series X|S owners will also get an enhanced version of Marvel’s Avengers to take advantage of the extra technical muscle of the new console generation.

Check out the game’s flashy anniversary trailer for yourself below.

“Every player with an Xbox Game Pass membership can experience the full game and all our post-launch Heroes and missions,” Hunter Wolfe, community coordinator at Crystal Dynamics, said on an Xbox Wire post.

Wolfe continued: “This includes four story campaigns that showcase one or more Hero’s unique abilities, as well as our Avengers Initiative – our evolving online multiplayer world that lets you and three friends play as any Hero in our roster and embark on global adventures.”

Marvel’s Avengers might not be the critical darling like Marvel’s Spider-Man was, but hey, if you have an Xbox Game Pass subscription, it’s free! So checking it out shouldn’t hurt your wallet any.
