J.J. Watt given okay to wear retired No. 99 as Cardinal

The family of the late Marshall Goldberg has given the okay for the Cardinals to unretire No. 99 for J.J. Watt

J.J. Watt looks to create history as the Arizona Cardinals seek their first Super Bowl victory. He will have a chance to do so in his familiar No. 99, thanks to the good nature of the family of Marshall Goldberg.

Marshall Goldberg wore No. 99 for the Chicago Cardinals and those digits had been retired long ago.

TMZ reached out to the family of Goldberg and his daughter is all for the defensive lineman wearing the number.

“He has my blessings,” Ellen Goldberg Tullos said of Watt to TMZ, “and I’m sure my father would be more than delighted for him to carry it on.”

Goldberg played college football as a halfback and fullback at the University of Pittsburgh. and was twice recognized as a consensus All-American, and played on two national championship teams.

Goldberg played for the Chicago Cardinals of the NFL for eight seasons between 1939-48, with an interruption during World War II, and was a four-time All-Pro. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1958.

Watt reached out to Goldberg Tullos after learning of what she told the sports/gossip site.

Per TMZ:

“Well, I know dad was really honored when they retired his number but also he’s always respected other players,” Tullos said. “And, if J.J. Watt had the number 99 with him for a long time and it meant something to him, I think he’d be delighted to let him use the number and unretire or whatever the proper word would be.”

Tullos continued, “He would be fine with that. It’s just the type of guy he was, you know? I think he would be happy to let him use his number and honored with that as well.”

Goldberg died in 2006 at age 88 at a nursing home. Following his death, his daughter, Ellen Tullos, and his widow, Rita Goldberg, helped to set up The Marshall Goldberg Traumatic Brain Injury Fund at The University of Illinois at Chicago. Goldberg had sustained a number of concussions during his career, which the family felt contributed to difficulties later in his life.

J.J. Watt can wear retired No. 99, says Marshall Goldberg’s daughter

The Arizona Cardinals have agreed to sign three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt. He has worn No. 99 his entire 10-year career and wore it while he was college at Wisconsin as well. However, that number is one of five numbers retired by the Cardinals in honor of Marshall Goldberg, who played for the Chicago Cardinals from 1939-1948 and was instrumental in the team’s only championship in 1947.

It would appear that Watt will have to wear another number.

But that might not be the case.

Watt might be able to wear it if the team is willing to lend it or unretire it temporarily.

The Denver Broncos did that for quarterback Peyton Manning. He wore No. 18 after it had been retired in honor of Frank Tripucka, after Tripucka gave Manning his blessing to wear it.

In Watt’s case, it is trickier because Goldberg died 15 years ago.

That said, it appears he has the family’s blessing if he asks.

“I know Dad was really honored when they retired his number, but also he has always respected other players, and if J.J. Watt had the No. 99 with him for a long time and it meant something to him, I think he’d be delighted to let him use the number and unretire or whatever the proper word would be,” said Goldberg’s daughter, Ellen Goldberg Tullos, in an interview with TMZ Sports. “He would be fine with that. It’s the type of guy he was. I think he would be happy to let him use his number, and honored with that  as well.”

Tullos noted the “wonderful tribute” there is for her father in Arizona.

If Watt wants the number, the family has no concerns.

“He has my blessings and I’m sure my father would be more than delighted for him to carry it on.”

The Cardinals have not yet announced what number Watt will wear.

J.J. Watt might need a new number with the Cardinals

No. 99 is one of five numbers retired by the Cardinals and has not been worn since 1950.

The Arizona Cardinals made a big early splash in the offseason, agreeing to a two-year contract with former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt. He reportedly has agreed to a two-year, $31 million deal to join his former teammate, receiver DeAndre Hopkins in Arizona.

However, Watt might have to give something up. He has worn No. 99 for his entire NFL career and also wore it in college at Wisconsin.

No. 99 is one of five numbers the Cardinals have retired in their history of more than a century. That number was worn by Marshall Goldberg, who played for the Cardinals from 1939-1948 and was instrumental in the franchise’s one championship in 1947.

Goldberg died in 2006.

Either Watt will have to change numbers or the team will have to allow him to borrow the number.

This is something Watt would already have known about, so it isn’t something to necessarily know about, but is something significant either way.

Either he will don a new number or the Cardinals will have someone wearing No. 99 for the first time since 1950.
